I agree with you on your assessment, but I do have a question for anyone. I thought the transfer portal was closed how could he enter it now or are we just finding out that he entered it when the window was open 5 days after our last game?

Probably because he is a Graduate Transfer. I believe the window is always open for them.

The Gophers are in a uniquely advantageous position when it comes to the portal. All the guys we lose are because they are buried on the depth chart and all the guys we get are dynamic players who just want a change of scenery.

I read Tony Liebert article it answered my question. Per Tony he is a grad transfer that allows him to enter the portal even though it is closed. He play only 106 snaps in the last 11 games last year. Was passed on depth chart. Would have been a nice depth piece but those are tough to keep these days.

Grad Transfers can transfer at any time.

Is that not mostly true? The only guy who left and made an impact elsewhere was Bucky. Philip Daniels possibly now as well.

Not every player they have brought in has been has been an impact player but a lot of them have.

Beanie Bishop transferred and was a second team AP All American at West Virginia in 2023. Huge step back in the d from 22 to 23.

Snarkiness aside....if you lined up who we have gained in the portal vs. who we have lost I would bet the gained list would be significantly stronger than the lost list. We have lost some good players to the portal, every team has, but overall we have brought in more impact transfers than we have lost so yes the on the whole the portal has been a positive for the football program.

I agree. We've been fortunate. Teams like Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mizzou should do well in the portal, because guys who are good and want to play in a major conference, but have been passed over at a Bama, Texas, OSU etc. may well look to these mid-tier top conference schools before they look at a MWC or AAC school.

Oh I don’t disagree. We have done a good job with the portal. My snarkiness was directed at the predictable comments on here that anyone who leaves simply saw no path to playing time.

That may be 100% true in this case for all we know. He saw action in games last year but it was limited and we have brought in some offensive line transfers. The majority of the guys we have lost to the portal have been depth pieces.

Nobody was making those comments about Daniels or the other handful of higher profile transfers we have lost.
 

Kind of a bummer considering the time and work put into developing him into a player that can contribute, but hopefully others have surpassed him.
