They have had an extremely soft schedule. Their 5 games to date are FIU, Western Illinois, Charlotte, UCLA and Maryland. And honestly their schedule setups great for them to have a really good year as they only have 2 really good teams on their schedule in Ohio State and Michigan. Other than that it is about as favorable a schedule as you can get in the Big Ten.

Cignetti may or may not be a good hire for them but I don't think you can draw a lot of conclusions based on the teams they have played to date.

Everyone can coach against the Indiana schedule so far.
 


Interesting that his coordinators don’t seem to make that much more than his position coaches.
 

Still an improvement over the 2023 Indiana team that won 3 games total They beat Wisconsin, a FCS school, and beat 2-10 Akron in OT.

He’s definitely a good hire

If you hire a guy who has had success as a head coach and you think he is a good fit for your school. Thats a good hire even if it doesn’t work out

At the time of his hire, I likened him a bit to Bo Ryan although Bo was almost a decade younger when he started at Wisconsin. Both guys were very successful at lower levels in their careers and didn't get their chance at the big leagues until they were pretty mature. Bo made the most of his delayed opportunity. We'll see if Cignetti does but he's off to a great start.

If they get 5-7 good years out of him it's probably worth it. He won't be a risk to get hired away somewhere else.
 

They’ll have to replace the transfer QB who has been great this year. But looks like they have another charmin soft schedule next year dodging Michigan, OSU, and USC. Non conf consists of ODU, Kennesaw st, and Indiana St.

The number that stands out to me is that, on December 1, his buyout drops from $8M to $6M. No idea whether he has eyes for a bigger job, but that buyout figure isn't going to stop any school higher up the food chain from going after him and, at his age, the time to move on is short. I will be curious to see whether he parlays his good start into a new job or just a raise at IU.

Disagree that hasn’t a risk to get hired away. Plenty of coaches would offer big money to a 9-10 win Indiana coach, even if he’s collecting social security.

Agree. He might be at IU for 5-7 years, or he might in effect be auditioning for a much higher paid job elsewhere ... a place with huge NIL money for player recruiting, etc. $6M is peanuts if a helmet school wants him.
 

Transfer portal is a wonderful thing for new coaches.

He got a good QB, seasoned 4 ⭐️ WR and a good RB from the portal to build on.

I feel like, if we had this portal activity with Fleck, he would have had a good first (0th) year here. His last years WMU team would have been gophers 😅

At age 68? Maybe after 1 year, but not if he's had 4 or 5 good years. No big time school is hiring a 68 year old coach.

At first I thought he'd be a low flight risk, given his age. However, you could flip that and say if a big dog comes calling, he only has a few years to cash in and get big $$ before he retires.

If I'm a school like FSU it may still be a bit risky. Assuming Indiana has a good season - he will have had success at FCS and only 1 year at Indiana (who has an easy schedule).

I think the age this is more about if the other team wants to pick him up.

Granted I don't think it would be THAT much of a deterrence for a team who just had a bad time with a different HC.
 


It seems like a decent number of first year coaches have a good first year partly because a lot of their best players transfer from their previous school. Indiana had 13 players transfer in from JMU. I doubt Dignetti brought his bad players with him. It's like a normal transfer portal year on steroids. Plus, they often flip much of their recruiting class. Deon did this moving from Jackson State to Colorado and even PJ did this to a degree moving to the U from Western Michigan - Chris Autman-Bell, Tanner Morgan and John Michael Schmitz were recruits that flipped to the U.

Like us, they got a one year rental at quarterback and are making the best of it, but it leaves a big question mark for next year. Of course, showcasing a dynamic offense will help future quarterback and WR recruiting.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for Indiana, but it will be interesting to see how things play out moving forward after at least partially combining the talent of two teams and recruiting classes into one.

If we promise to not tell PJ that you said something good about another coach, can you admit this seems to be a pretty good hire for Indiana?
 

Someone explain the age thing to me. Worried about a cardiovascular event? Age affects different people in hugely different ways. He’s obviously better than some of the idiot 30-somethings we see.
 

He’s a coach with an excellent history. Won everywhere he has been and been an assistant on some great teams. I think someone will come after him for sure if he wins big at Indiana. It would be refreshing to see him finish his career there though.
