Kudos to the crowd today.

Not the loudest ever or most sustained, but still engaged...especially for an 11 AM start.

The way Purdue has engaged Sparty the first half of that game looks like we'll need similar next week.

BTW...students who are there are getting better. This too is a good thing.

Huh? I don't get why you feel the need to be so negative about them. They certainly were loud and engaged and stayed until the end. The only possible negative I saw was that there were a fair amount of students who came in after the start of the game but once they got there they did just fine!
 

I got yelled at for standing and yelling when NW had the ball with about 3 minute left in the 4th. We were just about the only people standing in our section.

Besides that though, the crowd was pretty solid.

Interesting. In section 210 most everybody by me were standing during the last time period when NW had the ball.

The first half felt like baseball in July. People got into the game in the 2nd half.
 

Kudos to everyone who was there. Shame on those that did not make it who were within an hour of TCF by bicycle, could afford tickets, and didn't have a funeral to attend.
 

Unfortunately I had a funeral but my 4 seats were filled with Gopher fans, was following the game on my phone during the service after my speech.
 

I was in section 235 and I think the elderly lady next to me feared for her life after the kick return TD.
 



49,000 and change announced attendance
I thought the crowd was engaged and into the play, students were loud and their attendance got better as the game went on (of course). At the end of the game the crowd was really engaged and even hostile at times from the "Roughing the passer" penalty until the end of the game. NW's band had a big traveling group up near 233 that was pretty loud. I brought a friend who is from out of state and he thought the crowd was great and loved the 3rd quarter intermission "do the gopher" dance break thing.

Should also add I though the SKI U MAH cheer before the game seems to be gaining traction, was pretty good today

I was surprised how many empty seats there were. Here's a team that had a great 2013 season, beating NE and PSU at home, and playing very close games vs MSU and then WI at home. We have yet to lose at TCF this year, and are actually playing a meaningful game in early October on a sunny day where kickoff temps were just about 50.

I get it. 11 AM isn't ideal and sometimes it takes a while to filter into seats. But 2 upper deck sections on the away side were maybe 30-40% full, with tons of rows elsewhere having large blocks of seats open. The student section didn't fill up the lower level corner on the shaded home side, with the upper level being pretty bad (this coming from a guy who usually supports the student section's attendance..). This should have been 49,000 actual people in the house and instead I'd say it was more like 40k.

That said, the crowds are getting louder and more engaged. And, we're not Miami. lol.

Thought so too. Everyone around us, even the people who had trouble standing, were up and screaming on every big play. It was also oddly enough, the first time in a few years that when the attendance number was announced in the 4th Quarter most people around us were very surprised. Not because the number seemed to be to large, but it seemed to be to small.

Still not used to those extra seats in the End Zone I guess.

It sure didn't look like there was 12k empty seats on TV.
 

my season ticket neighbor gave his tickets to NW fans. We will be having a discussion as i almost got into a fight with the guy next to me when our DE got tackled in the end-zone (2nd safety not called this season) and no penalty was called. the guy was civil the whole game but still I don't enjoy seats of season ticket holders given to the opposing teams fans.

I will never think of giving mine away to fans from the other team. just down right embarrassing why you would support a team by buying tickets and then give them to the fans of the other team.

I have had that experience and this is how I handled it. When I was told to SIT DOWN, I turned to the guy and said. This is the Game, Get Up, NOW and make some noise. That seemed to encourage others to stand and open the mouths.

I would just point them towards the croquet match down the street.
 

Good-sized crowd, as good as we see when the opponent isn't IA, WI, or NE.
 

Our section went ballistic after that kick return by Myrick. 103 BTW.

After all the talk about a sellout this week, I was surprised to see as many empty seats as I did. But 40k? You're trolling.

This was one of the best crowds we've had without visiting fans filling seats.
 

Blue portable seats were completely full. If you transfer those people to the east upper deck, it would have looked completely full. Not sold out, but full.

Ok, I should have said 'much closer to 40 than 49.' Pics attached of the crowd just before kickoff (as well as the same view from 2 years ago vs Northwestern). Most people are standing up which hides open seats. Yes, many filled in, but there were many areas with giant blocks of open seats. The upper deck of the student section seemed to fill out a little but that's always deceptive as folks take up more space per person than usual given the benches. If I was given another shot at a number, I'd say 43k. I dunno. The ratio of empty seats to full seats from my vantage point was somewhere between 1:5 and 1:10, which says 40-45k. Crowd was loud and engaged, but I was still disappointed (maybe I have too high expectations for others to get on what is clearly a very much improving team..).

Also, off the top of my head, games where we had better attendance (& noise, IMO) without visiting fans: Cal 2009, MSU 2009, USC 2010, Syracuse 2012 (won't count TCF opener vs Air Force).

With that said, it was still a very good crowd, better than most Oct/Nov B10 games not against WI/NE/IA. Most general sports fans don't get excited about Northwestern, even if they might have heard they beat WI + PSU. People are still skeptics and we've seen plenty of worse crowds in just as important games (PSU last year comes to mind - had just beat Neb and Indiana on the road and the attendance was pretty terrible). If we can win the next 2, I fully expect a sellout with 90%+ UMN fans for the Iowa game. A win against them would set the place on fire for tOSU.

Gauging attendance at kickoff is going to yield poor results. The student section filled in decently on the lower deck as the game wore on and the other sections filled in too. I
 

It is all about winning. We are never going to sellout until we start winning. A team wins and the following season the team draws extremely well. Look at the Twins following the '87 and '91 seasons.

The student section filled as the game went on because people in the shade moved to find the sun. It was cold in the shade.

Thought the same thing.

As an aside Mrs. Billd did note during the game that she was glad we "chose" the sunny side for our seats.

Her implication that there was a "choice" on the issue was not how I remembered it...but that's a different story.

That said she's a Gopher Gal through and through and I'm not going to complain about some football-related sun in September, October, and November at TCF.

Good riddance to The Dome.

Finally, Weather Underground has essentially an identical forecast for next Saturday for the Boilers.

Regardless, rain or shine we'll be there.

Crowds are funny. I was at the UCLA - Oregon game in the Rose Bowl this weekend. Was a lot of fun. There were tons of empty seats at the start of the game. By the middle of the 2nd quarter it was pretty much full. When Oregon pulled ahead in the 3rd Q they started leaving. Even when there were a lot of people that it was a pretty subdued crowd. As for the Rose Bowl - beautiful setting, I was hoping that seeing the Gophers in the Rose Bowl would be my first time there, but the wife is an Oregon fan. Lots of history - there are plaques outside the stadium (South end) of the all games, head coaches and MVP's, and the score. Murray Warmath and Sandy Stephens" names are proudly displayed for the 1962 Gopher win. The restrooms and concession stands are woeful buy today's standards. Most people seemed to park on a golf course north of the stadium. Great place to tailgate. Next time I go there I hope its to see the Gophers.
