Crowd Today

Kudos to everyone who was there. Shame on those that did not make it who were within an hour of TCF by bicycle, could afford tickets, and didn't have a funeral to attend.

I wanted to be there badly, but was in Nisswa attending my nephew's birthday, does that excuse?...

Ok, I should have said 'much closer to 40 than 49.' Pics attached of the crowd just before kickoff (as well as the same view from 2 years ago vs Northwestern). Most people are standing up which hides open seats. Yes, many filled in, but there were many areas with giant blocks of open seats. The upper deck of the student section seemed to fill out a little but that's always deceptive as folks take up more space per person than usual given the benches. If I was given another shot at a number, I'd say 43k. I dunno. The ratio of empty seats to full seats from my vantage point was somewhere between 1:5 and 1:10, which says 40-45k. Crowd was loud and engaged, but I was still disappointed (maybe I have too high expectations for others to get on what is clearly a very much improving team..).

Also, off the top of my head, games where we had better attendance (& noise, IMO) without visiting fans: Cal 2009, MSU 2009, USC 2010, Syracuse 2012 (won't count TCF opener vs Air Force).

With that said, it was still a very good crowd, better than most Oct/Nov B10 games not against WI/NE/IA. Most general sports fans don't get excited about Northwestern, even if they might have heard they beat WI + PSU. People are still skeptics and we've seen plenty of worse crowds in just as important games (PSU last year comes to mind - had just beat Neb and Indiana on the road and the attendance was pretty terrible). If we can win the next 2, I fully expect a sellout with 90%+ UMN fans for the Iowa game. A win against them would set the place on fire for tOSU.

My takeaway from your pictures, RailBaronYarr, is that our seats are VERY close to each other.

Our section went ballistic after that kick return by Myrick. 103 BTW.
That was a really fun crowd! I brought 4 friends that had never been to a Gopher game before and they absolutely loved it.
We are in section 103 also!

Crowds are funny. I was at the UCLA - Oregon game in the Rose Bowl this weekend. Was a lot of fun. There were tons of empty seats at the start of the game. By the middle of the 2nd quarter it was pretty much full. When Oregon pulled ahead in the 3rd Q they started leaving. Even when there were a lot of people that it was a pretty subdued crowd. As for the Rose Bowl - beautiful setting, I was hoping that seeing the Gophers in the Rose Bowl would be my first time there, but the wife is an Oregon fan. Lots of history - there are plaques outside the stadium (South end) of the all games, head coaches and MVP's, and the score. Murray Warmath and Sandy Stephens" names are proudly displayed for the 1962 Gopher win. The restrooms and concession stands are woeful buy today's standards. Most people seemed to park on a golf course north of the stadium. Great place to tailgate. Next time I go there I hope its to see the Gophers.

Was busy all weekend so didn't have time to find out - where did you get your tickets, how much were they, and were they good seats?

I'm also in 103 and was near the epi-center of the Who Hates Iowa? chant, 105 came along for the ride but their game time fan leadership is questionable.

Section 103, ASSEMBLE!

I'm 74 years old. I have spinal stenosis, a ruptured disc, and arthritis in my lower back. I can only stand for a short period of time without pain. I have supported the Gophers through thick and thin for over 60 years; financially and otherwise. I don't want to be consigned to the croquet match down the street. But my ability to stand during a game is limited. I would hope that fans in the non-student sections might give some consideration to those of us who have a limited ability to stand. Its one thing to stand for a key play, which I strongly encourage, but it is very discouraging to one like me when people do it at other times.

My voice is toast still today and we have some really great fans around (sorry 105 but you guys are totally jive). I always ask the folks behind us if they mind us standing when we are on defense. Fans can make noise sitting down too.

It is all about winning. We are never going to sellout until we start winning. A team wins and the following season the team draws extremely well. Look at the Twins following the '87 and '91 seasons.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your definition of winning? Is 8-4 winning?

We're in section 237. In fact, our row is a shorter row as we butt up against the open suites.

237, Row 23, seats 15-16 (I think, I never remember til I show up and re-check my ticket) here. Getting tight this year as we've got a 6 month old in tow plus his gear...

I actually thought that Kick Return TD put the crowd into a frenzy I hadn't seen in a long time. From all the energy with everyone who was ticked off about the previous calls against us, that just translated into joyous energy when he took that kick back. I think about everyone around us was jumping up and down, clapping, screaming, and high fiving everyone as far as their arms could reach. There's nothing like high fiving 20 strangers around you!

I've seen this phenomena lots at hockey games, the galvanizing nature of a egregious call against you and then the vindication of scoring shortly there after really gets a crowd lathered.

Winning the Big Ten or a January bowl game. Minnesotans are true bandwagon fans and until you win something siginificant the casual fan is not on board. I am there win or lose and looking forward to my roadtrip to Champaign. I Occasionally have an extra ticket and sometimes have trouble finding someone who wants to go to the game.

Totally agree. Was awesome and my voice was feeling it the next day for sure

This is so spot on!

Call me...I dumped my tix when my boys started playing, and can rarely make a game. But if there's an opportunity, I'd be down.

I finally get to go to a game this weekend!

I wasn't at the game Saturday but this is pretty similar to what happened on Aaron Hill's pick-6 against WI last year. A guy in our section was running up and down the steps getting high fives.

Did the student section make any noise for any of the basketball or football recruits at the game Saturday? From the looks of the lists, it was a decent day of visits for both squads.

No. Everyone quietly welcomed them with the loudest whisper in history.

Funny. These are the same students that think the chant is "Kill, Rape, Pillage, Burn..." I think we should be happy that they just showed up 20 minutes late and had their pants on.

We're in 237, row 29, seats 3 and 4. Look behind you this Saturday and wave - if I'm there. Daughter wants to use the tickets and take a friend and I haven't decided on whether to be a good dad or a selfish dad.

Be both. Buy two tickets for them and bring a friend yourself!!
