Crowd last night ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Heard a stat that apparently Minnesota beating ranked opponents is far more rare than I realized, at least as a stat. If someone else heard it too and recalls, seeing it again would be interesting.
The thing I heard on the broadcast after the game was that PJ Fleck has more victories over ranked teams than any other Gophers coach in history. That seemed incredible to me.

My understanding was that having a night game for homecoming makes for a long day for the alumni and the rest of the visitors.
Totally understandable.
It was long and opened tailgate lot an hour early than listed. 7 hour tailgate on a mostly sunny day.

Lol. Dude picked a McCartney concert over a Gopher game vs a ranked team so I'm not putting much stock into this opinion
True McCartney/Gopher fans made the easy decision to drive down to Des Moines on Tuesday.

Better venue too. Even with the hotel cost, much cheaper as well.

Guestimate of number of Nebby fan in the stands last night?? Im sure there was a decent turnout.
It wasn’t like when Nebraska came to the bank the first time. Not even close to that many.

But it was more than we’ve seen in the past few games.

I think it’s was closer to 5k probably less

They were speckled throughout the stadium, but no bi concentrations of them

If there were more than that, yo7 would have been able to smell them

Lets keep it G-rated for DarrenTheGreek. No need to characterize the sexual orientations of the visitors to make the count...:p

Thank you!

I'm a life-long Minnesotan, yet I'll never understand the Minnesota Mindset.
Hey, I was there when we beat Penn state. Best gopher game of my life. The field storm was beautiful. But you don't storm the field when you beat a team you've beaten 6 times in a row.
Sorry, just my opinion.

Not as rare as Nebraska beating ranked opponents!

Embarrassing field storm however. Not when you beat the 25th ranked team🤦‍♂️
It was an appropriate level of passion. It was mostly students. Sort of a mini-storm. They (and the team) deserved a celebration. The way I look at it, you get one field-storming opportunity per year.

If not this game, which one would it be? The other ranked opponents are road games. And it’s not always all about how good the opponent is. I think the students actually understood the narrative around the Huskers, and how this game’s result overturned that.

Well said sir.

That had to be one of the most energetic crowds since the Penn State game. Students, rest of the stadium, very loud, very enthusiastic. Maybe a bit boozed up too (especially noticeable in the walk back to the parking lot ;)).

Just awesome. Electric factory at the Bank last night

It makes sense if you think about it. Under PJ, the Gophers have pretty consistently been rated just below the Top 25 (often 26-40). That’s a good spot to knock-off ranked opponents. It means you have a team that is solid and mostly capable of competing, but will often be overlooked.

Also, waaay back when the Gophers were any better than they are now, there were only 20 ranked teams, fewer games were played each season, and a lot of close games ended in ties.

PJ’s tenure as HC is also now among the longest in Gophers history.

Ties and only 20 ranked teams are definitely two things I hadn't considered. That makes sense.

Thanks!

On top of that, the field operations staff knew it was coming.

The students that remained...probably 40% of the max of the game...started moving down from the upper deck about at 3 minutes left...and the entire group started moving and collecting in the lower rows of the student section as the seconds ticked down.

In the meantime, The Band started to evacuate their section. Neither of the Billds had ever quite noticed that before but they were pretty much gone at 1 minute left. Very orderly and Mrs. Billd wondered if there was some kind of threat and I said no.

Also in the meantime, the security staff were lined up at the East End Zone along the perimeter at the stands. Some extra folks lined up too.

Once the game ended all it took was a handful of kids to make the jump and get through (they really weren't stopped) and the rest was history.

The final thing was the announcer telling folks not to enter the field and for all intents and purposes said "never mind." Classic.

This one was not spontaneous. Sort of like the wheels of the Mayan Calendar turning toward the apocalyptic end of the world in the movie "2012." You could see the upcoming storming take place in slow motion for those last 3 minutes.

And in full disclosure, I was saying out loud this was not a storming occassion but they were not listening to me. And of course we learned later that Coach thinks its fine. We'll see if he gets called to the Principal's Office for encouraging post-game hooliganism with the new Prez...

It was mentioned after USC last year. There's some sort of field rush protocol for the band. They get TF out of there before the end.

It was a very Minnesotan rush and mainly students. Fleck loves it. Honestly it should be choreographed to allow the students fans on the field after every win. Let the visitors leave and go celebrate with the team.

Simply announce at the two minute time out to wait to go on the field. “Fans. We own Nebraska, please wait for them to clear the field and come celebrate.”

The band stayed in place for the Penn State field rush in 2019 and fortunately no one got seriously hurt but there was a lot of pushing and shoving to prevent the portion of the band in the stands for getting jammed into the wall. A trumpet also got badly damaged and the band got a close up view of a few bad fan injuries. Since then the plan has been to remove all equipment, everyone goes inside, and the band can either watch on a projector inside or go up to the stands. From what I remember, they've done it for 2021 Wisconsin, 2022 Iowa, 2024 USC, and last night.

The plan going into the game was to not do it as a field rush seemed unlikely but with how the game was going and how rowdy the crowd was, they (someone in operations, not the band directly) decided to do it with about 5 minutes left in the game. Whether intended or not, that sent a message to the students that they were allowed to storm the field.

Honestly if the students can do it orderly and safely let them celebrate with the team on the field. Breed comradery and a sense of being part of something. Especially in games against regional rivals.

Again, as long as it can be done in safe way.
