With Leidner most likely starting next year, would it be possible to redshirt Croft next year?
I don't understand the burning his redshirt this year.

Would love to get some opinions on this.

Croft will likely go into next year as QB2, which means he will likely get a couple snaps. Meaning no redshirt.

To answer your question, yes, they could redshirt him next year. Unlikely though, based on the likelihood at some point of needing a backup QB to paly due to injury and/or getting him some game experience.

If he doesn't play any more this year, which is likely, it will then have been a mistake to have played him. For what 4 plays?

We all wanted to see him at the time, but it was a mistake. However, if we are able to get quality depth at the position (still a big question mark) then it won't matter.

We thought we had mucho quality depth on the O-line this year.
Can they appeal for a redshirt for this year if he does not play any more snaps?

Agreed. If our recruiting doesn't give us another quality option at QB 4 years down the road, we have bigger problems than one year of eligibility for Croft.

There were some of us here that didn't want to see him this year. At least you were you able to admit playing him was a mistake.

It sounds as if Leidner was not 100% for a decent part of the year and the OL wasn't doing him any favors. However, the lack of information didn't stop many posters here from calling for his head. I'm sure this lesson will be forgotten in about 20 seconds....

Hopefully we win out, get healthy, take advantage of the extra practice time and win a bowl game.

True. However, the Coaching Staff belated admitted that Mitch was hurt for a number of games early in the year. They needed to have someone play QB if he couldn't. Streveler at least in games, couldn't throw. He was so bad that when he came in on the Wildcat, nobody on the Defense or in the stadium worried about him even trying to throw the ball. Probably up until the Nebraska game maybe even the Michigan game, they were concerned that Leidner wouldn't be able to hang in there much longer.

There was still about half the season to go, they had 4 wins and they had no back-up QB that they trusted to play, if they had to play him.

They then choose Croft.

Mitch has gotten healthy. He's played very well since that Nebraska game. Only would say that it's pointed out the major failure of this staff.

Even if Mitch had stayed healthy, 5 years in and they had nobody on the bench that was capable of replacing a beaten-up QB for even half a game. Heck, maybe this season was a blessing in disguise. No decent High School QB would want to go to a school where the vast majority of time all he was able to do was turnaround and hand the ball off.

This year we've heard from some recruits that they've been told that the Gophers were indeed gonna "open things up". Some people that are now begrudgingly praising Leidner, were then screaming "No! Never! We only need to run the ball to win!" This year, with a guy at QB who has been more often than not, awful in his College Career, those High School kids have watched him direct an Offense that, "threw" the air at least, shredded 3 of the best Defenses in the country.

The Gophers better not want for a back-up QB again. Maybe even one who can not only throw the ball, but be able to take off an run when those Linebackers get out of the damn box and have to drop back into coverage.

That would open up all kinds of things wouldn't it.

Seems to be a principle here to assume that some other QB is certain to be better than the one we have playing. I read such sentiments here with Weber and Nelson. To be fair, though, I didn't see it with Gray.

He played a quarter at Northwestern, a quarter at Purdue and got a snap or two against OSU. OSU was a close game against what might be the top team in the country. As a fan, i feel pretty good knowing that when our starting QB went down in that game that our #2 QB wasn't taking his first snaps. Hopefully he gets some play against Illinois. But playing in three games as a backup QB fits the job description. I'll feel even better about Croft stepping in if he needs to next year knowing he has played in some big ten games and now knows what that feels like.

Injuries and poor performance have been part of the problem, but Kill burned a lot of redshirts that he probably shouldn't have with Croft being significant on that list.

20/20 hindsight thread. Looking back a month ago, it was a total roll of the dice that Mitch would get healthy and perform at a high level. It was pretty much the same odds that he would continue to be banged up/less effective, and at that point Croft would have been in line for a lot more playing time. Next year he will be the backup all year and it would stand to reason that he will get entire halves of at least a few NC games.

At this point, he is QB2. He will have to take snaps eventually and need him as a capable QB. If we are blowing out teams next year, I expect him to take a lot of snaps. With Tony Polzian coming in, I think they redshirt him and let Croft/Polzian compete in 2017.

If you redshirt him, who is the backup? Connor Rhonda?

Isn't it possible to redshirt him this year?? He's played like 20 snaps..

Quit stressing out over the Demry Croft burnt red-shirt. For all you know Poljan comes in and beat him out and Croft never starts a game...:banghead:

If he played just 1 snap you can't redshirt him.

Actually unless they changed the rule you can play a very limited number of snaps in the first few games of the season and still redshirt. However once you get beyond those first couple games a single snap is enough to burn the redshirt at that point. Croft definitely played beyond the deadline so like everyone is saying there is no way to get that redshirt back for this year even if he doesn't take another snap.

It may turn out to be a wasted year but too early to say if it will really come into play. I guess the one scenario where it could bite us some is if he does in fact end up being the heir apparent to Mitch and would then only have 2 years as a starter as opposed to 3. But so much can change from year to year with injuries and new players coming in that it really isn't worth fretting about.

That's for a medical redshirt. It wouldn't apply in this situation since Croft isn't hurt.

I don't see why you can call it a wasted red shirt. He got quality snaps against good teams.

I agree with both of these. Plus coaches like to stagger their best QBs by two years. Preferably that would include redshirting, but it now applies to this case. Once Leidner graduates, Croft will be in line to start as a Junior, with Polijan the backup as a RS FR.

I wonder if Croft playing was a Kill thing, like Nelson was? Wonder if Claeys will have a different perspective going forward on red-shirting. They still traveled 4 QB's to Iowa on Saturday. (Leidner, Croft, Perra, Rhoda)

At the end of the day, you play to win the game and your best players. They (or Kill) thought Croft was the answer there at #2 QB. It will be wide open for #2 going into next year. We just all need to hope we can get #2 on the field in the first four games next year.

I believe that you don't red-shirt someone that you think will play significantly or start in year #2. Get them some game experience. You red-shirt guys that you want to develop and contribute in years 3-5. Just an opinion.
