Croft #2?

Alert: Expectations are that as we upgrade the program, the in coming QB's will be better passer and runners than our QB's of the past! Every year we should be excited about the new gunslinger and dream of his potential. BUT, it takes a year or two to season each new player until they are ready to perform at the B1G level.
Welcome to the big leagues of college football.

Sometimes I think people get too used to watching NFL quarterbacks and expect college quarterbacks to be just as good.

I think this is one of the biggest problems, especially here in the Twin Cities. This is a pro town, with the Vikings as the #1 team. People here expect college QBs to put up pro stats, when very few college QBs go on to be good NFL QBs.

I don't really care for pro football I'll watch the vikes but that's about it. Leidner is never going to put up big passing numbers but he can do a lot better job of just being a game manager.

Yes I said in my first post on this thread that Croft needs to redshirt to get a year of the weight room. My point is if Leidner doesn't improve this year, there should be a competition next year for the job.

Just leave troll, you're annoying as hell.

Been a gopher fan my entire life, most people in this state settle for average like settling on leidner then calling me a troll because I feel different. Having a 50.1 passing percentage is pretty brutal.

Getting redshirted, especially at the qb position, does not mean you won't be a star. I recall that Andrew Luck was redshirted his freshman year and he turned out to be pretty decent.

And Johny Football, and Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariotta etc etc. I love Leidner as a college QB and would agree that he is certainly average. My only beef with him is to play better in big games. He played absolutely horribly at TCU, against Ohio State and unfortunately Wisconsin. I would rather have a consistent quarterback (even if at or below average) then one who beats Iowa by 50 and then craps a brick during our biggest games of the season. He's just such a wild card but I will give him credit for Mizzou.

"Settle"? What does that mean? What are we supposed to do about it as fans? It's not Leidner's fault that he's easily the best QB on the roster.

I'll take anyone over leidner if they can throw the ball with at least decent accuracy. Streveler isn't a good passer be any means but he's a much better athlete then leidner, perra has shown the ability to pass from what I've seen in practice in the past. Also Croft is a better runner and passer then leidner , redshirt him this year and then let Croft compete in camp next year for the starting job.

This thread is starting to sound like one of Reusse's old Gopher FB columns.
If the Gophers Win, the other team stunk.
If the Other team wins, the Gophers stunk.

It's like that with Leidner. At least with some fans, it goes like this: if the Gophers Win, it was because of other players. If The Gophers lose, it was Leidner's fault. I'm getting sick of it. Leidner is a Gopher. If you can't cheer for and support ALL of the players, it isn't Leidner's problem - it's your problem.

Unfortunately for your argument, there is far more to playing QB than throwing accuracy.

Streveler isn't a good passer be any means but he's a much better athlete then leidner

So your argument is that the most accurate passer should play. Streveler is a less accurate passer than (not "then") Leidner, but he can run faster, so let's play him? It couldn't just be your anti-Leidner bias, could it? No, that's definitely not it.

Also Croft is a better runner and passer then leidner

Based on what? Practice? You're joking, right?

I expect Mitch will respond to good coaching and improve in every coachable aspect this season. I also think his experience will give him greatly increased confidence, adding to that improvement. In addition, our defense will be stout, so I think going against that unit every day in practice will help. I also think our OL will be better this year. But, the biggest difference will be whether we're more talented overall at receiver. If Mitch regresses, I trust our coaches to make the best possible decision about what to do with the QB position.

This quote from Kill yesterday speaks volumes. If CS5 is your back-up, you provide confidence- you don't avoid the question...

Asked if Streveler is still the No. 2 quarterback, Kill said: “We haven’t talked about it too much. We know what he can do at quarterback, and he came to me this summer and said he wants to play.

Hmm, does that mean that he is probably no longer playing QB, or that he is solidly behind Leidner so they will play him at WR occasionally? Thing is, as far as I know he was still practicing with the 2s. Are we gonna have our 2nd string QB playing WR in the game? At the very least I would start getting the number 3 QB some reps with the 2s. If there isnt a huge drop off in QB from CS5 to whover the third guy is, I'd just put Streveler permantly at WR and move the guy behind him up to second string. Feels more stable that way. Maybe the coaches have it all figured out, but on the surface this looks like their is some confusion/uncertainty goin on.

Let's make this perfectly clear---if Leidner goes down in a game...Croft is not coming in. If Leidner and Streveler go down...Croft is not coming in.

Rhoda and Perra would play before Croft comes in.

With a week's practice: Croft is still only off the bench, maybe 3rd option. With Minnesota's offensive game plan, Croft doesn't play in 2015..

I am really curious to see how this plays out. Personally, if Mitch stays away from getting dinged up I expect a breakthrough year for him. Not as a Heisman candidate, but for controlling the game and putting points on the board. Expect a big step up as a Junior. BTW, he hasn't been bad. It isn't like he has kept anyone from consecutive 8 win seasons. Other than Wilson, he will be as good as any Wisky QB and that is a pretty good standard for us right now.

We now have too many offensive weapons on the field to be cutting the play book back to a few plays. Fact of life.

Bingo!!! Finally someone gets it. ... This also the reason sometimes the fans, media rag on gopher sports.

Although we do need better play out of the QB position.

FTR - I am NOT asking for Croft. I want ML7 and think he is the man. I am just curious to see what is happening at #2. Lots of rumblings about how good Croft looks and situations/quotes like this make me wonder. I want Croft to RS, my point in raising this has nothing to do with anything different.

I agree that if Leidner goes is out for a game or even two, Croft will not play. They won't burn his redshirt for that. But if Leidner blows out a knee early, in one of the first few games, all bets are off. Croft would play if the coaches think he's ready.

I disagree with part of this... Depends on how season is going .. If we still have not lost a big ten game 4 or 5 games in and Mitch is out for the year.. They will not be playing strevler for the long haul u would be playing croft or parra whoever is the best player and has nothing to do with redshirt at that point.

Not sure if this was directed towards me, I was assuming Croft is guaranteed to redshirt, so I was thinking Rhoda or Perra as number 2

Not sure how you can look at Kill's history and be adamant that he wouldn't burn a redshirt on a QB. He did it to Shortell despite having Alipate on the bench and he did it again to Nelson halfway through the next season with Alipate (still on the bench).

You don't burn a red shirt to spell a guy for a series, but a significant long term injury to Leidner and all bets are off.

I don't want to see a freshman, or red shirt freshman lead this team at QB. We have invested in Mitch and short of him going backwards I hope to see him lead the team for the next two years with the next guy up taking reps in blowouts next year.

Streveler is the second best qb period. He will be second string. Nothing wrong with getting a good athlete on the field for a few plays. Did the samething with Q when we had Webber and later with Nelson

No offense but in his limited action last year he looked good as a runner and mediocre at best throwing the ball. Small sample size but I don't think Streveler would be a lock to be the number 2 guy in a long term replacement situation. Mop up duty or short term sub sure but if Mitch goes down the coaches will turn to whichever of the QB's they feel gives us the best shot to win and at this point I don't feel positive that guy is Streveler. As others have said though, hopefully we don't have to find out.

here is my take

Leidner is the starter not because he throws the best spiral, he will start and continue to be the starter based on his ability to make better decisions in all aspects of the game. first and foremost he has seen more college football defenses and has ran a pretty decent read option. his other players have supported him and he is a great leader. the overall offense will be better this year and mainly in part to Mitch's ability to read the defenses that he will be going against and the fact that he has more experience and he has improved his skills.

if Mitch goes down early game 1 or 2 i figure Streveler will slip into the QB position and run the offense to the best of his ability, he still neds to get better at making decisions but would with playing time. he will hand off and he will run and eventually throw a few passes. and if Chris goes down in these games then I would expect to see Kill roll the dice on either Perra or Croft

if Mitch gets hurt in games 3-5 i could see Kill going straight to Croft. I think he sees enough in Croft to give him a shot against the likes of Kent or Ohio and he can get his feet wet and learn on the job. the kid makes some bone head decisions (like anyone could expect) but he has some incredible flashes of greatness. he just lacks that experience

The gophers are in the best depth position at QB in a long time. People need to look to the future and quit looking back at last year and think everything will be the same. everyone is getting better.

This position has been way below Big Ten standards for a long time ! Poor completion ratings !!need more ch better play to get to the next level
