Pelowski – who called the move “obscene” in a Rochester Post-Bulletin story – hinted that the move could hurt the school's chances of receiving funding the athletic program may want for facilities in the near future because it shows there is ample money in the athletic fund.

Here’s an excerpt of what Pelowski said, which Friedrich posted:

“When we have the bonding hearings, if there is anything relating to athletics, this will be a topic of conversation. Because you’re now talking millions of dollars that are apparently available that could just as well go into buildings as paying someone not to do anything — or paying someone to do an incredibly mediocre job.

Go Gophers!!

Well - most boosters and fans wanted Tubby bought out. So I don't think that him being bought out hurts- unless the hire doesn't measure up to expectations set by such a buyout. Boosters are investors in their own satisfaction. They want to see us win. If the investment looks good- they will do it. If they aren't sure- they will wait and see. Back in the day - an unknown guy came in from Ashland, Ohio and knocked it out of the park in a year. Nobody had to invest anything- all you needed back then was a court, some showers and enthusiasm. Now you need money, enthusiasm and competence. Not easy.

If Teague gets an unknown- it may just take longer for the funds to come in. People will wait for the success. It may be a great move for him to do so - or not so great.

With sequestering going on all over the country, I think that fiscal policy issues are EVERYWHERE. There are even cities going bankrupt. I think the West Coast has some of that going on. Be careful which parts of the country you make too many assumptions about. Money is a big deal every place in this country, I am afraid.

I'd suggest that you start taking a good look and listen to your local stuff on the west coast...east coast, the south, the north and yes, the mid west. I knew this buy out would put prexy k in a bind when he goes to the state house with his hands held out asking the legislators for a hand out...Tough, over extended times are happening all over this country...The buy out pretty much meant no practice facility right now unless Flip comes in and energizes a big drive by the boosters. Our new norwood won't have too much success fund-raising without Flip.

And that's pretty much the way things are. A booster can't get their name on a buy out the way they can get their name on a building...

Multi-billion dollar unfunded pension liabilities for decades to come =/= a one time charge of ~$3million

Give them a D1 hockey program and they too will shut up. Worked for Jan, Kato and the Beavers. Would only have Moorhead left.

Well, at least tell the other side of the story and what this guy's senate counterpart said when asked the same questions by the same reporter. She said essentially the opposite of Pelowski. Senate Higher Ed Chair, Sen. Terri Bonoff (D-Minnetonka) said she has no problems with Teague or the U of M athletic department. Although Bonoff said she is concerned with the payout, she says it won’t color her thinking if the U asks for state for help with sports facilities. She said she has faith in the U’s new leaders, and that Teague needs to put in his own people if he’s ever to build a successful program. She said she’s meeting with Teague next week.

This is nothing more than this goofball Rep. Gene Pelowski (D-Winona) doing some political grandstanding for his own selfish purposes.

No left coast gopher thinks the U runs their own printing press, he is probably from Stockton Ca

Isn't this the same legislature that voted $500 million of PUBLIC financing for Zigi?

Projections were 34 mill per yr for the state part. Revised projections are 1.7 million for the first year.

Now someone in the legislature is complaining about the University Athletic Dept spending 2.5 mill of it's own money? How can we take them seriously?

That money wasn't for Zygi! It was to create jeerrrrbbbsss.

I'm assuming that stands for jobs.

Like I told a friend of mine, paving over the BWCA would create a lot of jobs also. That doesn't mean we should do it.

But think of the added jobs returning to its natural state. That would be twice as many jobs!

To the OP, any legislator who grandstands about Tubby's buyout was never voting in favor of any funding for a practice facility anyway. Since when are they asking for state funds for it anyway?

They sound like the might ask for some bonding money in regards to the new facilities plan. We'll know more when they actually release everything.

As I recall.

In 2011 Maturi as talking about a $15M basketball practice facility that he promised the program, Tubby if you will, in 2007. Buyout money dents that. Boosters would pay for that pretty quickly if motivated. Neither Maturi nor Tubby seemed to energise that. Terrible job by the athletic department, U as a whole on that front. Obvious I suppose.

In February of this year Teague talks about a basketball practice facility in the range of $80M to 125M. WTF?

Doc help my math here but...

1 boosters gives $100M.
10 boosters give $10M.
100 boosters give $1M (do we have 100 on the G'hole to stand up and get this done?).
1000 boosters give $100,000.
10,000 boosters give $10,000.
100,000 boosters give $1,000.
1,000,000 boosters give $100.
Every Minnesotan gives $17.

Practice facility = public funds. Bonds issued. Equals the state of Minnesota gets energised over Gopher basketball. Just built TCF, just bought out yet another coach.

Teague needed to hit a home run with this hire. If he doesn't, I will send $ for a Teague buyout.

Time for a real conversation of this board, if anyone is interested.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague says a basketball practice facility is a top priority among the department’s goals for Gophers sports.

Teague called the practice facility “not a want” but “a need” in a question-and-answer session Thursday with reporters. He said a master building plan will be unveiled in mid-April, estimating a cost between $80 and $125 million. Private fundraising will be the primary source of money, but Teague indicated an interest in exploring the possibility of state bonding to help pay for the project.

Currently, the men’s and women’s basketball teams play in 85-year-old Williams Arena. They compete for time on the raised floor there and in the gym at the adjacent Sports Pavilion with the wrestling, volleyball, gymnastics and dance teams.

I don't know his definition of a master building plan, but $125M? I am beginning to doubt he knows what it is. Little fish in a big pond syndrome? BTW, the whole Iowa project was $47M. They did a great job as much as I hate giving the pigeyes any credit.

That's not just one building bro.

Talk more about the facilities plan.
Part of it will be a football support facility that will have new offices, a weight room, and a training room. There's also going to be an academic advising building for use by all student-athletes. We'll also have a basketball practice facility for our men's and women's programs. Women's gymnastics needs a building; wrestling needs a facility. We'd like to make enhancements to existing facilities for volleyball and golf. The list goes on. We want to be as comprehensive as we can be.

What is v-7's official position on bonding or the issuance of bonds? I thought that the concept of v-7's profile writing/reading was to establish bonds between assistant coaches and athletic directors. Our new norwood should understand that bonds can NOT be "issued..." they must be established through relationships and careful profile study. Tom Cruise might be interested in getting involved with this "v-7-ization..." program and it's "select" group.
It sounds as though some over at the state-house will not take too kindly to our prexy k when he comes asking the legislators 125 million? How much did Nebraska spend on their new facilities? Might it make more sense to go for 250 million and start all over? And, if this new norwood character pi$$es off the boosters and people who under the RIGHT circumstances MIGHT be supportive of some kind of facility improvements it might get really lonely and really ugly for prexy k at the state house. All the money these foolish administrators have been spending on buy outs followed by mixed review hirings would have made a start on the fund-raising needed for a down payment that could have been included in a proposal to win some state bonding issuance to complete a beautiful new facility that would meet ALL the needs for the next 25 or 30 years, if not longer.

And, we have learned how the administration functions. Just look back at what that control-freak prexy b did with his coaching switch-a-roo when he brought in an incompetent, unknown, inexperienced con-artist to bring the football program into that beautiful new stadium that so many boosters had extended themselves to help the University obtain. We KNOW what prexy b did. And now prexy k is about to back a v-7 hire of some assistant coach to take over the hoops program following the EXPENSIVE buy out of the former coach...prexy k seems to feel he and his new norwood don't need the backing of the boosters and people who have been LONG TIME GOPHER fans? Get in touch with reality prexy k. Let that norwood character go through with his: "... v-7-imization..." of the University of Minnesota Men's Basketball Program. If that's the way it will be. And then hold them ALL accountable.

Thanks, Nate. Appears he has a lot of details to work on. $125M is a lot of cash. He states in your link 100% philanthropy. Really? I would think it would be more realistic to prioritise and piecemeal over time with some results to show for it. Return on investment (as small as it has been) has been poor. We all need to support the U as we can. All the people who post here are real fans of the U. It is a bit of a gauge of where people's heads are with the programs.

Wisconsin dealt with reality by simply eliminating a lot of minor sports years ago. We are the annual kingpins of the all-sports trophy perhaps because we use such an egalitarian approach to funding everything. The term jack of all trades, master of none comes to mind. Get good at football and basketball first.

I hope you're not serious.

So did you really think the 80-125 was just for the basketball facility?

19, you are a page behind on this. Westcoast was just a post behind on it. If you want the basketball facility done, you don't toss it into an impossible/unworkable Master Plan. You don't give out a $2,500,000.00 buyout and blow the hiring process. You use the media to your benefit and not to give rise to negative speculation and discontent among the boosters who have impact money. Just saying.

Not behind at all. I knew what the 80-125 was for. I was asking if you seriously thought it was just for a basketball practice facility. You implied that with your post.

We found something to agree on!

I agree, the U also needs to trim the fat a little bit.

Why do all of these minor sports need funding, make them into club teams.

The "hurt" of Tubby's buyout just went way, way down now that he took the TT gig. I could be wrong but I believe the obligations are reduced by any amount he receives at the new job. It would be nice if Amelia or someone could clarify that on the record.

NO.

This is not the NFL.
