I am really excited projecting the quality and depth of our offensive line over the next three to four years. I am convinced it will open enough holes for Edwards (and hopefully Jones) to have huge college careers. Wonderful to have sought after out of state recruits so dedicated to the U.
 

I am not convinced that 2 OL linemen recruits offers enough future depth to the team. Just where is the toughness when Michigan State recruited the 29th and 30th best HS DTs and a DE. Wisconsin recruited the 14th best DT and 29th best DE. The difference between Connor and these opponent players is not enough to make a difference. Add in the fact that the the other teams are deeper in numbers equates to no progress along our line. We need more depth by adding another OL to our class that has a greater potential for impact.

Jerry Kill has his work cut out for him and I know we have hit our ceiling for the next few years. 8-5 is our current max potential and our future max potential.

No one in our new B1G division scares me in terms of out matching our O line. Although I do agree that a couple of teams in the other half are a step up.

You know our new division includes Nebraska and Wisconsin, correct? They generally pump out pretty good o-lineman every single year.

I mean our O line being outmatched by their D line - but going back to Connor Mayes, crystal balling, but I expect him to be All B1G centre by the end of his junior year. Kid is a beast and willing to listen/learn.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say here. Are you saying we don't have enough depth or are you saying we aren't recruiting enough top level recruits?

As for depth, I imagine we will sign one more OL (Ragnow or someone else). At the very least, you know we'll get a few preferred walk-ons. And we've had good luck with walk-ons in the recent past.

As for other teams being deeper, this has been discussed before but we are right on par with everyone else. And that is including a very small senior class of just Olson. The Gophers have 19 OL on the roster this season, Wisconsin has 17. We're fine.

But who knows when that was taken. That weight could be 6+ months old for all we know.

Better he loses the weight now than once he's on campus. The strength staff can focus solely on helping him add good weight. He's gonna redshirt and be at a healthier, quicker, stronger 300-310.

A HS SR who is 6'5" and 280 lbs is NOT too light for an OL recruit.

(For instance, Taylor Lewan was 6'7" 270 as a HS SR (he is 310 now)). If you look at the weight of HS SR OL recruits, 280 lbs is about ideal.

My guess is that if Mayes lost 40 lbs, he lost 40 bad lbs. I doubt he shed much muscle. I think it's a terrific sign that he lost the weight. The kid seems like a hard worker, which can be a difficult trait to teach.
 


According to Mayes in a recent interview he did with 247 he currently weighs around 307. That would mean he was up around 345-350, which is definitely too big. His brother Alex gave him some conditioning drills that the U offensive linemen do and that helped Connor shed the weight. Good to see he's working hard to get in great shape.
 

His weight won't be a problem. He'll RS his first year and if needed, the coaches can focus on his gaining weight.

Any reports on how he looks during the practices for the Army AA game?
 

He has dropped the 40 pounds from his junior year of HS football. His baby face is gone and he has developed a hungry game face. They say he looks great in SA!

The very best HS RBs should be fighting to come here and play behind the OL we are developing. OL is the slowest part of a team to develop. We are a work in progress. We have the parts.

Wish I could be watching Connor in the All-American game on NBC right now but in NW Minnesota they have the stupid NDSU pregame on until 1.
