Congratulations to Myron P. Medcalf on his new ESPN job!

Huh...i thought the Peter Principle was in place while he was reporting on the Gophers for the STrib. Perhaps there was another level after all...

There was a great bit in the movie A Bronx Story. A guy wouldn't pay back ' C ' 20 dollars he lent him and kept avoiding him. Sonny, pointed out that even though he didn't pay him back the 20 dollars, and ' C ' couldn't stand him anyway, the guy who wouldn't pay back the 20 dollars was doing him a favor in that he'd never have to talk to him again so all it cost him was 20 dollars to get this guy out of his life. ' C ' thought it was cool and neve thought of it that way, blah, blah, blah.

I just seems kind of funny that the people who didn't like Myron are still complaining about him, even though, apparently, he's done them all a favor in taking a new job at ESPN.

It's all a matter of perspective I guess.

Good luck Myron. :)

I guess you got me on the architect analogy because I've never heard of the other two guys. Anybody else on GH ever heard of them?

Yes. I'm a planner at an engineering firm. Anyone that has ever taken and architecture class or studied architecture would know of them. Frank Lloyd Wright is going to be more well known to us because he is the only American, greatest American architect and has so much influence right here in the Midwest. K.....019 is missing Walter Gropius in that group of the masters of modern architecture. I'll stop now, because if you really cared you could look it up yourself and find the answer.

Any ideas on who will replace Myron? GW - SS?

It's true we may get someone in here that is worse. I hope the Strib doesn't screw this one up.

I most liked your story ripping him about his support of Kevin Payton..

Myron Medcalf, just give up

As if regurgitating his preview for tonight’s game against MSU from this and other Gopher blogs, after a two week hiatus he drops this little gem on all of us:

“Use Kevin Payton as a reserve point guard over Al Nolen because of his experience level”

I really don’t think there is a need to comment further. I will say, hiring a beat writer with absolutely no experience or knowledge of college basketball might have passed for acceptable last year. The Gophers were bad and most people were trying to forget that we even had a Division I basketball program. I also understand that in the era of media consolidation and falling newspaper profits, there is less money to spend on adequate reporters, but goodness, I’m sure there is a retired English teacher somewhere that likes basketball a little bit who could use the extra cash.

This program is on the rise, and the Strib really needs to step up. And Myron, I hear there is a D-II school in Mankato that needs a beat writer.

Hmmmm...I see a "Myron's Worst Reporting Quotes" thread dovetailing with this post quite nicely!

One more time...

For the first time in Tubby Smith's tenure at Minnesota, the Gophers might have a few players who will consider their pro options before graduation.

Ralph Sampson III has the height, the skill set and pedigree to play at the next level. We're all waiting, however, for him to put it all together and add a little aggressiveness to his game so he can fulfill his potential. A big year by Sampson will certainly get the scouts talking even more than they are now. Plus, consider guys like Hassan Whiteside, Jerome Jordan and even, Cole Aldrich. The year before they hit the NBA radar, few knew much about them. It doesn't take much for a big man to raise his draft stock.

If Devoe Joseph adds some muscle to his frame and builds on his All-Tournament worthy performance in March's Big Ten tournament, he'll have a shot at the next level. Down the stretch, Joseph ran the team. I think he's a point at the next level, if he gets there. And I think the Gophers will play him at point guard next season, too. He needs to be consistent. But he has raw skills that were on display during that magical run in the Big Ten tourney. He's not there yet, but he could be the next Big Ten guard to land on the NBA map.

Rodney Williams should be a different player next season. During a short stretch his freshman year, he lived up to the premature hype about his pro potential. He was a top-5 pick on nbadraft.net's 2011 mock draft at the start of the season. But he struggled throughout the year and didn't play much during the Big Ten season. He should've redshirted. But when he was on the floor, he pulled off some above-the-rim maneuvers that are hard to describe. He needs to prove that he can handle the ball, hit a 15-foot jump shot and defend on the perimeter. But he has all the makings of a poor man's Wesley Johnson. If he cracks the starting rotation, a possibility with Minnesota's lack of depth at small forward, and plays well during the Big Ten season, Williams will move up on a lot of real NBA draft boards.

Different people say different things about Trevor Mbakwe. A few days after he signed with the Gophers in 2009, he told me that he'd already talked to Tubby Smith about going pro after his junior season. Legal issues prevented him from playing last year and they might keep him off the floor next season, too, depending on the outcome of his trial in June. One person close to the program told me that he doesn't think Mbakwe will start for the team. Others think he'll lead the Gophers to big victories over their toughest opponents. The 6-8, 240-pound forward certainly has an NBA frame. If he showcases pro-level skills next year, he'll get NBA looks, too.

I think Myron made a bad first impression with "some on the board," and you only get one chance to make a first impression. What many of the critics never noticed was indeed his improvement over the time he's been in the position, most notably the HUGE improvement from year 1 to year 2. The last couple of years I've been pleased with his work by and large. My only major complaint was how he started talking about NCAA Tournament resume in November and December already. I mean, can't we just report on basketball games until we get within view of the Tournament?

Now if we can just get Neal Justin to go...ANYWHERE!

He tried but seem to always be going on with senseless babble about the next level.I don't know who he looked to as mentors but he could have used someone who knew the game to lead him in the right direction. He was inexperienced and seemed to think he had it all figured out.

Gopher fans are the only group of people I know who bitch about the lack of coverage their squad gets. Wake up and realize you have 4 major pro sports teams in town that draw much more interest than any of the college programs. You aren't going to get in depth coverage all the time or the top writers. Most people that get assigned these jobs are learning on the job and when they become successful at it they take the next professional step.

I completely disagree. I worked for the KU athletic department's SID office and trust me, KU fans pissed and moaned all the time about lack of coverage (even though they got a TON of coverage), I lived in Oklahoma and Ok St fans complained about lack of coverage. I lived in Wisconsin during the early Alvarez years and Michael Finley years and their fans complained about lack of coverage. I lived in California and UCLA football fans complained about lack of coverage vs. USC, etc. Also, most STrib reporters are NOT learning on the job.

Go Gophers!!

I think the big gripe was that he had a job that a lot of people which they had, and would be willing to work very hard at it, and he seemed to not really care enough to do a good job.

And the strib is a major newspaper. It isn't some podunk daily. They should have experienced reporters.

The Press/Marcus does a very good job covering gophers football and men's basketball. Myron was awful.

This sounds like a huge win for everybody but the folks at ESPN; good for Myron (he avoided the unemployment line), good for Gopher fans (it's unlikely that the next in line could possibly be worse), but maybe not so much for ESPN.

Lazy? I have a hard time calling somebody lazy without seeing the effort they put in. He was just a horrible writer. Period. As a person who takes some pride in what they put in print, I found the juvenile material that he put in his articles to be not of high quality.

My other two (minor) issues: I seem to recall at some point that Myron was either from Wisky and/or went to Madison. In my opinion, this was abundantly clear in many of his "impartial" articles.

Secondly, why on EARTH does he feel the need to use the middle initial? I frequently sign my name with my middle initial but I happen to have one of the most common names in North America; it helps to differentiate. I doubt Myron is often mistaken for any other Myron Medcalf's. For some reason I always thought that was just plain ridiculous.

No need for anybody to resort to name-calling but I have to admit this will be one more reason I can't wait for basketball season to start.
