In a way, Minnesota can.

Let's face it. Even with a good season we were a regression candidate, especially without Bateman. Now, the good vibes of 11-2 get to continue as our last effort for another few months or a year of recruiting.

This sucks for players, fans, and everyone. But it might suck a little less for Minnesota because we get to keep the aura going. It would be much worse to be Nebraska, for instance.

I agree.
Better to have this happen off of 11-2 year 3 than off of 5-7 year one.

Pretty much this. It’s a hey-we’re-doing-something-feel-good-handwringing exercise and mainly a don’t blame us exercise.

The players will be much better off at home where many won’t have ready access to testing, cardiac screening and other diagnostic facilities and personnel.
 


Assuming the ACC and SEC move forward with a season, I wonder did we should expect any players to hit the transfer portal?

St-Juste and Durr are the first two that come to mind. I’m not sure there’s enough time, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Which brings us back to the failure of the schools and conferences to develop a testing plan and capacity with manufacturers that are ready to go, which is really inexcusable, 7 months in.

Meh, it’s more of a failure of the National and state governments.
If healthcare providers can’t turnaround results in less than 48 hours how are colleges supposed to turn around 120 tests 3 times a week?

There isn’t the lab capacity necessary. This is a national and state government problem. Division 1 athletic departments are just a side effect

Because you don’t have to travel and interact in communities outside your own.

That argument is like saying you have to go liquor shopping so why not go to a bar?

Maybe you’d be fine going to a bar too?
 

Issue conferences have is with one cancelling, now others are more liable if they proceed.

"Were you not aware of the same challenges the MAC conference was aware of when they cancelled their season?"

"Do you value your athletes less than a MAC school values the health of their student athletes?"


I would expect all have to cancel at this point.
If the students were paid, it might be easier to proceed, but with college athletes not being paid it hosts another level of concerns.

Bateman was ahead of the curve on this one.

Of course that's predicated on things changes for the much better by Jan-Feb. Teams in the BCS Title game play 15 games within 5 months.

More than in any of the other sports, I think the offseason in football is necessary for allowing the bodies of the athletes to heal and then rebuild for the next season. Some people are trying to argue that a spring season would be in the best interest of player safety, but I believe that shortening the offseason by a few months would put the majority of the players in more danger than if a fall season took place. And that's even under an assumption, for which there is no guarantee, that there will be better treatment and management of the virus by the springtime. If there is no fall season, then I don't see any way to justify having a spring season (certainly not when it comes to safety), and I can't imagine the players and coaches would go along with that.

This is, likely, a large reason why we aren't seeing the positive tests in the NBA and NHL (in the bubble) versus the MLB. There are so many additional factors and contacts that come into and out of the circle of everyone when you are talking about traveling. I am in the camp that canceling the fall season will not really change the trajectory of the disease (which doesn't look great if we do see a surge in cases given our hospitals continue to be at/near capacity for ICU beds) given these are young, predominantly healthy individuals but does remove an unnecessary variable from the mix (I'm sorry but football is non-essential, particularly in the what is defined as "amateur" sports) for risk of furthering community spread. The question is will people continue to participate in curve flattening techniques or not. The football season being played is irrelevant to that.

Did this really happen? PJ actively convinced him to opt out? Or did PJF simply not try and beg him not to?

The only people they should be interacting with is members of their own team and staff, and members of the other team and staff, who have all been tested.

They have chartered transportation, stay in a hotel together, and eat meals together away from other people.

They are paid. They celebrated mightily when they got their nearly half million dollar scholarship. Press conference, hat reveal etc.,. Check out how thrilled they are.

You don’t have to argue to me. I am on the record saying canceling the season will make zero difference in the health of these players

I can’t find it now. It was basically a Big Ten spokesperson saying the reports of the 12-2 vote are BS, and they aren’t there yet. Basically a walk back. We’ll see.
 

Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Setting outside with mask 6 feet apart is not ok but setting side by side in the Barn will be ok.

There are alternative testing methods available that don’t require the same personnel and lab facilities.
 


To get quick turn around testing for all the Div1 athletes would be a tall order. Professional sports can do this, but not college at this time.
