I’m so disappointed

Power 5 Commissioners met tonight in an urgent emergency meeting and sources are saying all over that BigTen will announce 2020 Fall Football will be postponed tomorrow! 😫

Life sucks, this world sucks, FU COVID!
 




Not surprising but I had hoped we could ride the momentum from our big bowl victory.
 




The Big Ten just released the schedule and allowed camp to start Friday. Why do that and then just push for canceling the season a few days later? Nothing has really changed in the past few days.
 




Bummer but unsurprising. I'd rather they did than string it along until September 1st and then cancel.
 

This absolutely blows, I don’t know what I expected but I was holding out hope. Honestly it’s probably better than trying to navigate the waters of what happens when teams inevitably have infections.

Crossing my fingers this gives us more time to get it figured out and we can have some semblance of a “normal” season in the spring.
 

the decision is not being made by sports fans. It's being made by administrators - i.e. bureaucrats - who are, by position and nature - risk averse. which means, don't do anything that exposes your operation to potential liability.

they can't cross their fingers and hope no one has serious medical problems. they have to protect their own interests - and those big school endowments - against the possibility of any legal action.

It stinks - but, from their perspective - it is perfectly understandable.
 

Even a spring season is predicated on a safe, effective vaccine being widely available. If you think testing has been a clown show, just wait for the vaccine rollout. There’s talk of a weighted lottery determining one’s chances of obtaining the vaccine. There simply won’t be 300+ million doses available in the spring of 2021. Will healthy young men be moved to the front of the line to ensure a spring football season? (Not being judgmental. Just asking the question.)
 





What has not been factored in yet is the student athlete's actual opinion about a having a season.

We've seen some glimpses and it's all over the board

With a season coming forward whatever that "opinion" is comes in like a tsunami...and the "powers" can only control it so far.

That's the final piece of the 2020 season puzzle. The B1G has satisfied the fans as far as they can...having a 10 game season among conference teams...leaving it up to each institution whether fans are actually in the seats. There would still be games under this scenario...and all the $$$ that could would come through.

You still need the young men to actually participate. I'm willing to bet there's wide disparity across all athletes on this point. The Power 5 can't let that go public. It's not their fault. The only answer is to defer the issue to later. Sucks but that's how things work.

I hope I'm wrong.
 

I haven’t seen a discussion on playing spring football schedule, and then again in the fall of 2021? Is this really feasible?

Good point. No, I would assume they will not prioritize giving to healthy college kids. That would be a bad look.

It‘s definitely concerning, and we don’t know the incidence of severe issues, follow on disease. Many, most cases will probably recover without incident but that’s the $6.4 billion dollar question for the leagues. “Well, nobody knows“ probably doesn’t warm the hearts of overprotective mothers or jurors. People generally want reassurance, which of course is impossible with anything. Myocarditis is caused by a number of viruses but being a new virus, under the spotlight, without known probabilities and outcomes the decision makers are weighing the pros and cons of moving forward with an eye on avoiding a PR disaster (and losing their own legacy and position).

If I had to guess most of the guys still want to play despite the remote chance of chronic disease or sudden cardiac death. Not everyone is wired the same way.
 

If their demands aren’t met ... then what? Are they going to refuse to play?
 

Coney Durr wants to play, but he has a legitimate concern. This is his last chance to build his draft stock, and if the season gets canceled a few games in, he’ll be out of eligibility, or if he tests positive, he’ll have to sit out a few games. It doesn’t sound like he’s actually scared of the virus. I think a lot of guys are in the same boat.

Is this the new polio? People like FDR who "recovered" are left with devastating follow on.

CoVid-19 doesn't care if you are rich or poor. Meek or powerful. A celebrity or an average Joe. It doesn't care about your politics.

It only cares that there are plenty of hosts, willing or unwilling, available. The scary thing is that it seems to be morphing.

The thing that changed was college football ran out of time
 

We’ll all learn more today. If not today, I’m sure the threats of postponing/cancel 2020 NCAA football will continue everyday until one of the Power 5 conference does it first, then all remaining conferences will pull the plug right before kickoff.

Can’t imagine how frustrated, irritated, and concerned the players are.

Is it just possible the administrators are acting in the best interests of the players and the community?
Of course the decision is not being made by sports fans. That is one of the more bizarre comments made today.
Like the economy until the virus is controlled by wearing masks, avoiding crowds and that really means bars, and social distancing life including sports is going to be disrupted.
A vaccine is on the far horizon.
We cannot have both ways.
A glance at what is happening in Sturgis, SD is a perfect example of how really self indulgent, spoiled, stupid and entitled some in this country are.
We are not the greatest generation.

This will benefit the NFL, they will spread out regular season games to Saturdays, this still won't be a money making year for the NFL without fans, but there will be additional TV revenue.

IMO, Power 5 froze out the players on purpose in discussing how the season would play out for fear player demands would make any season unlikely, then prayed they wouldn't have any solidarity after they announced their schedule, that lasted 24 hrs.
