College Basketball Transfer Portal Thread - 2024

True. But the top end guys won't come if they don't think they will be starting next year.
There is more parity then ever and will only keep growin. Look at the NCAA tourney. It is more important about the coach understanding his team and getting them to perform to their best.

Would CBJ be having Gohlke(d2 transfer) shooting all those wild 3's so often is just one example. Maybe if Mitchell was on Oakland instead of Gohlke he would be shooting like that in the tourney? Mitchell's 3 pt% (39.9) was higher than Gohlke's(37.8%) in the season this year. Mitchell was 44% last year for Pepperdine.

There are plenty of players in this tourney, probably not once on the Gopher's sights, performing on the big stage very well, probably not making that much in NIL either. With Big Ten getting tougher and tougher, you are going to need 9,10,11 in the rotation with 11,12,13 getting some development at some points in the season. If you are only bringing in 2 recruits a year, you are going to need to get 2,3,4 in the portal each year.

There are plenty of players out there I am sure would be ok with making some NIL, and being 6,7,8,9,10 man in rotation on top Big Ten team. What can't happen is your 8,9,10,11 guys providing almost zero minutes besides blow outs in weak non conference games.

I hope you're right. But it would be a big change from Ben's prior use of the portal where we don't even try to use #11-13.

we just need our boosters, and fortune 500 companies to pay these kids and they'll stay...we have the money, pretty much no competition in the area, shouldn't be that hard, Christie NBA maybe, but everyone else, they have guaranteed roles here and will be competitive, only way I see them transferring if it is about money
It's super easy to spend someone else's money.

Jake Davis would be a good get! Sounds like Illinois going after him a lot.

Not always just replacing for the next year, it is setting up so after next year we don't need 7-10 new kids too. Only recruited 2 so far. If all stay next year, then Hawkins, Ihnen, Garcia, (likely Christie), Fox, would all be gone and if losing all them and have nothing more ready after that more would probably transfer the following year and team would have nothing. We need some big C/PF! depth!
Also maybe Betts, Keiny's who have seen little development are not big 10 ready and time to fine more that are. Big ten is only going to get tougher, so strengthen up and it is ok to have a deeper team. If players don't like that then they are not here for the team anyhow.

We also have more to sell too.

Significant improvement over last year and three of our transfers have received B10 award recognition.

Recruits (2)
Asuma
Grove

Probable returns (7)
Payne
Hawkins
Mitchell
Betts
Keinys
Asuma
Carrington

Guess- we lose 1

50/50 guys (5)
Fox
Ihnen
Christie
JOJ
Garcia

Guess- we lose 2 or 3

I think we are shopping for 2-4 guys in the portal
If the worst happens and we lose Garcia and Christie then Ben has to go out and nail equivalent players in the portal. It can be done. We got Hawkins last year. Wisconsin got Storr...and so on.

If we lose a couple of depth players - then we are in great shape to find a couple missing pieces and go on a run next year.
Seems like an awfully big assumption to have Betts listed as a probable returner to me

We have seen so little of him that I am a little indifferent except that I like the idea of players sticking with a program and developing. If he moves - then we have more options. If he stays- its a good thing. He has ability and he is young.

Another key point is look at Arizona today. Bench player Jaden Bradley was a key contributor playing 27 min off the bench helping Arizona to the Win today. He seemed to have no problem coming off the bench. Even with all the extra tv timeouts, etc. Arizona had 8 players play. 7 players playing 17+ min in the game. The 8th player still got 9 min in the game.

I think playing 8 regularly would be ideal, if you have 9, that's a bonus. Hard to find many teams that can or want to go 10 deep.

Since we've already sunk two years in, it would be nice to see some payoff.

Probably means very little, but Betts was the first one rushing off the bench and congratulating the players at the conclusion of the Butler game. Seemed really enthused. Good attitude.

I noticed that too.

He may well be more emotionally well adjusted and mature than many on here, including moi.

He also has some local connection with people on his mom’s side owning Zorbaz.

Our problem isn't that we don't go 10 deep. Our problem is that we can seem to assemble even 8 reliable players for whatever reason. We have 12 scholarship players but we've played only 7 recently. It would be nice to have 8 or 9 reliable players so one or two of them can get some run when others ahead of them are struggling.

Sufficient depth definitely has been a problem under Ben Johnson but Pitino before him also had difficulty getting much from his bench. I guess we'll see what happens after the roster for next season is settled.

I remember when a guy could get a Poor Man's Martini (forgot the ounces but it was basically a big assed mug of beer with olives) for $2 at the Zorbaz in DL. Now I would need to take out a loan.
Plenty of NIL opportunity there.

He was one of the earliest players to drop into the portal after the initial conference tournaments were completed. Did well for a freshman. Mercer had another freshman who did even better.
