Collado returning punts

I thought Brandon Green was the backup returner?

I thought Brandon Green was the backup returner?

exactly. MV thinks Green is limited also. I hope he is not seriously hurt. Green is still my didn't have a good spring, has been quiet in camp, but I have this irrational hope he is suddenly gonna kick it into another gear and be a solid 2nd/3rd option.

On the other hand, I am excited to see the Gophers line up in the red zone, with two backs, a tight end, and Gray and McKnight at WR. DBs won't know what to do.

Just a thought---
I love watching Troy Stoudermire return kicks--- Is there any reason he doesn't return punts? I guess I've always seen them as similar skill sets, maybe you have to be more quick than fast for punt returns.

Hands have to be better for punts. You are under a lot more pressure when you catch in the punt game then you are in the KR game.

Collado is a beast, we'll be fine.

If Green and Allen are both limited enough to not be out there returning punts, that leaves us with only TS and McKnight as WRs with any experience. Gray's only been a WR part time for a few weeks and I don't think we want to see Keise on the field yet. the guess is that TS is too valuable now at WR due to lack of depth so we really don't want to expose him to taking a shot on a PR

The much maligned Hayo Carpenter, also returns at WR. He's done some kickoff work, but don't know about his punt return work, but I thought I recall him having some experience with that at JUCO.

You might also recall that he had some experience catching footballs at JUCO too, but he hasn't done much of that as a Gopher either.

Hayo doesn't count to me until he proves he can avoid his own blockers. Actually until he proves he has any skill other than running in a perfectly straight line very fast

You just stole my thunder Oleboy. I was going to say the exact same thing.

Absolutely right - with KOs the returner generally has a larger window of time to decide it they are going to field the kick or let it roll. For punts, its a more difficult ball to catch, and you have much less time to decide if you are going to field the punt, fair catch it, or just bail out. Then add 11 angry defenders coming down in your face and you have one of the toughest positions on the field to play.

I had to field punts my sophomore year in High School because I had very soft hands. I was pretty terrified most of the time I was back there, as most of the punts were pretty short so the defense was right on top of you.

I do trust Collado to do a good job back there and pick up a few good returns.

I STILL have nightmares about the sure KR TD that Hayo had on the reverse during the Cal game. All Hayo had to do was use his blocker and he was off to the races. Instead he literally ran into his own blocker. I literally could not believe my eyes.

That, and probably because the last time they put Stoudermire back there to return punts he struggled fielding the punt.

Yea, that was painful.

Fair points, was just noting, he is also a returning receiver with experience lol. And he's still returning kicks, so expect some more WTF moments maybe lol. I remember that return against Cal, I was amazed as well. I have to believe his vision has gotten better though.....hopefully.

I was sitting right behind that play, and I saw the whole thing develop. I see Hayo coming around on the reverse, the hole opening up, and then nothing but green between him and the endzone. And I started celebrating the touchdown. A little premature, obviously. I was just about speechless for the next ten minutes.

When was the last time we actually had a punt returned for a TD? Or a kickoff for that matter? The last few years our kick return game has been decent in terms of field position, but I don't recall taking any to the house...

The last one off the top of my head was Jay Thomas against FAU back in '07. Can't recall any more recent than that.

There was some talk early in camp that Brew was going to "open it up" this year and let the kick return team take some shots at the end zone. The way it was stated, it sounded like we'd intentionally been playing it safe the past couple years.

I think we'd intentionally been playing it safe on punts, but i'm not 100% certain how you can play it safe on KOs.

we've definitely played it safe on punt returns. We'd only use one corner per side to block the gunners which rarely works but I think they wanted to try to go after punts or at the very least prevent fakes. Our return men almost never even have an opportunity to return

Most importantly, I don't think Allen ever muffed one all season did he?? I hope he's healthy enough to get back there again, he'll get his chance to break some down field.

After the cheap shot he took in Cal game, I don't blame him. He was also a freshmen last year.

Good point. I remember that hit and was surprised he wasn't shaken up more. Getting blasted like that will mess with anyone's head and Allen did a good job of securing the ball after that.
