Here's the hit on Morris. Was it a fair hit or was it worthy of Cockran being kicked out of the game? Obviously the TV announcers thought he should have been kicked out and miss the first half of the Northwestern game. I don't know the NCAA rules on reviewing hits. Is there any concern for Cockran being punished by the B1G?

That is tough. Not a full launch. Minimal contact to head if any. I don't think the league could suspend when no foul was called.

Penalty. Not kick-out able. Leidner got lit up 5 yards deep in the end zone with no penalty.

personal foul yes, worth of suspension - no

Well, if you're gonna get flagged, you might as well knock his fillings out.

This ain't bean bag.

Just a football play. He only took one step and he already launched himself before he threw the ball. I think it was legit.

Foul. Even if he lowered his shoulder for the hit and even if the spear was unintentional, you can't lower your head like that.

(Worthy of a penalty - but no suspension imo)

Not 100% clear on the ejection portion of the rule but it absolutely should have been flagged. He launched himself into Morris after the ball was gone.

He got flagged and he should have been. Hard to tell on whether or not he should have been tossed. Looked a lot like the play that Ndondo-Lay got flagged for earlier.

Agree with Breakin' that I couldn't believe the Michigan guy didn't get flagged for hitting Leidner five yards after he'd scored.

Protecting Qbs is one of the most hypocritical things football has done lately, not a flag, not a foul unless you are going to neuter the sport. A fullback or a TE shouldn't absorb the same hit for no flag. My opinion: Let the sport remain a collision sport and better educate player on risks, don't change the rules to favor glory positions like QB or WR

I agree about QB protection. I hate it too especially in the NFL how pampered they are with the rules.

Easily should've been tossed. No place for that. It's a chicken sh:t hit. Using the crown of the helmet and even launching himself. That should be tossed out of the rest of the game and all of the next game. Again, get that sh!t out of the game! Anyone who thinks any different lacks intelligence. That hit has nothing to do with toughness, it's cheap. I love The Gophs and I love Cochran, but there needs to be zero tolerance for that.

He didn't get flagged.

Thought he got flagged but didn't get tossed? Just looked, yep he got the flag.

QB's are the stars. Stars bring in the fans. Fans bring in the $$$$$$$. Especially the NFL.

Using the crown of the helmet

It doesn't appear that the crown of his helmet ever hit the QB. Looks like more shoulder and arms.

Anyone who thinks any different lacks intelligence.

It's tough to take someone series that says these kind of things.

"My opinion is correct and anyone who disagrees is an idiot!" I used say and think these type of things...when I was in junior high.

I agree it wasn't a good play by Cochran, but stop acting like your opinion is fact.

The NFL has gone overboard protecting the QB but as Station 19 mentioned that is a money decision. In college they have made an effort to take targeting out of the game regardless of who is hit. As a defensive player you can't leave your feet and lead with your head going into a defenseless player.

I wonder if any of you that see the hit by Cockran as clean can honestly say you would still feel the same way if it was a Michigan player doing that to Leidner.

Yes...100% to all of this.

Leading with the crown of the helmet is a foul. He should have wrapped up as well. I like the attitude though. Go a little lower next time. It's not like it was Borland diving at Nelson's knee.

That said, it's arguable if he was going for his helmet and from that angle it almost looks like he hit him with his shoulder and the side of his helmet. If he was going for the shiver he would would have been significantly higher.

My bad. I figured the refs missed the whole thing. They called a face mask on us grabbing a shoulder pad.

Foul not an ejection. To me, it looked like contact with the shoulder and forearm. Any higher and it should be an ejection or even a suspension. Still, I hate to see hits on a QB like this. The potential for long term health consequences is too great. I know of two former football players who have paid a heavy price for injuries sustained from hits.

Foul for a late hit, which I assume would be roughing the passer. The intent to injure isnt there though. Cochran sees QB with the ball, and is lining up for a hit. His head is down, and doesnt see the QB released the ball. The hit was late, no intent of injury though, and definitely not a "dirty" hit.

In the NFL, he gets fined. College remains a little bit more pure though.

It looks like he turns his head at the last moment so his shoulder connected mostly with Morris, not the crown of his helmet. Flag but not an ejection.

Didn't look good, was unnecessary, especially considering the Gophers' best chance of winning at that point was to not make stupid penalties; and Morris was doing poorly - you want him to stay in the game, not force him out. Absolutely deserved the penalty, even if it had not been a step late (but it was late). Probably not ejection worthy, but close. Cockran needs to do better and know better. In this situation, that was one of the dumbest plays he could have made.

He planted his shoulder in Morris's chest and gave him a forearm shot. His head was up and his helmet never made contact with the QB. The launch was the question. But that is the call of the referee who is right there.

Another call that got no mention was Leidner's touchdown, he has crossed the goal line on his feet and 5 yards into the endzone he is belted down by a Michigan Linebacker. That should have drawn a flag.

Why do people keep saying this (no flag was thrown)? A flag for roughing the passer was thrown, which turned the situation from a 4th-and-16 on their own ~10 yard line (and "game over") to a 1st-and-10 from the ~25 (and "game still on").

At first, I thought the announcers were stupid for suggesting he be kicked out.

After watching that several times, I'm convinced we caught a bit of a break. It sure looked like targeting to me.

I'm with the crowd that says flag but no ejection. I am generally in the camp that says quarterbacks are too protected, but that is more when they are acting as a ball carrier or a blocker. Because of the way they open themselves up, there needs to be some protection on the follow through of a throwing motion.
