I hate to cast a bad rap against a college kid, but have we had a weaker, more 'scared to touch, much less tackle someone' type of defensive back in our history before?! I played CB all my life and cannot imagine not lowering the shoulder to a Rb or Wr and knocking them out. He seems to be so scared and cautious to hitting someone.... it's weaksauce! I hope he reads this and grows a pair and decides to leave it all out on the field from now on rather than being constantly afraid of getting a boo-boo from hitting someone.. show some aggresivness!
 

Christyn is a Starter; he was just complemented after the Iowa Game as being one of the toughest 165 lbs. players Coach Jerry Kill has ever seen. He throws his body in their play after play, was the gest of Coach's comment. So, I would guess that you saw a player trying to play through injuries that in fact limited him from his performance level usually displayed. By the way, Christyn is a student-athlete that came here as a JUCO over an offer from BYU and apparently has taken care of business in the classroom as well as on the field given that he has played extensively last year and this year. He is a Senior now.

Based on this it seems that Kill is rewarding the effort.
 

165 lb safety

Kill praises his effort but is ALWAYS quick to point out that the Gophs are in a huge disadvantage playing a 165 lb safety in the B10! If there was somebody else that played smart and did not make mental mistakes Kill would play him but there is nobody else.

I don't question his heart or "want to", he's just not capable of shedding Big10 blockers & tackling Big-10 athletes. That said, if we had someone better, they'd be playing.

Really! Interesting assumption.
 

On a more talented team Lewis might be our starting cb. I don't fault him for not being a 190-210 lb safety, I congratulate him for playing the position to the best of his abilities. Don't be surprised if he makes someones NFL team as a cb.

lol... sry but a 170lb cb is not going to make any nfl team... he will get RUN OVER...
 

Me and my buddy at last couple games have sort of turned Christyn Lewis into a joke. He is the worst corner on our team of mediocre corners. He gets burned on every play and he doesn't make the tackle without giving up 20 yards after the catch. I'm fairly certain he does more harm than good. Henderson is the only guy in our secondary that plays hard and smart.
 



My impression of the team so far is that there are guys on this team who want to hit and tackle (the majority), and there are guys that do not. Lewis does not. Now, he's got a nose for the ball, obviously a smart guy, and puts himself in a position to make plays, but he often doesn't. In my judgment based on what I see, it's want-to. In the Iowa game he had a chance to stop Coker on a third and short and just ran right past him. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

You and your buddy should first figure out what position Lewis plays before you get all negative with your assessment of his play. As a corner he lines up completely out of position and he never covers his guy!

You make some good points, I think they apply to the whole team. We need guys to want it more than the team we are playing.
 



I feel for the kid, who obviously has a big heart, but last week he gets stiff armed like a bag of leaves and again this week. I noticed after the long run this week, #24 Manual came in. Last yr they started him, must be one of the problems or something this yr.???
 

I'm a little surprised that this staff hasn't toyed with the idea (and maybe they have) of using Keanon Cooper at safety. He's undersized a bit for a LB at only 6-0, 210; and is said to be one of our fastest defensive players regardless of position. He could make a heckuva, hard-hitting, ball-hawking safety, IMHO. He and Royston could make a good safety tandum that would send fear into people.

Plus, we do have some depth at OLB with Lamonte Edwards, Spencer Reeves, and Aaron Hill. I think there's a chance if Cooper could learn the safety spot, that we could be stronger overall with him back there, Edwards or someone else at OLB, and Lewis possibly at CB. Plus, we've run through about five guys (Lewis, Salamon, Manual, Haviland, Thompson) at that safety spot and no one really seems to want to take ahold of it in an impactful manner. Kill has said he wants his best athletes out there and that's why he moved Edwards to defense. Yet, Edwards is only playing about 20% or less of the plays. Maybe getting both Edwards and Cooper out there would help. And, maybe not. I could be barking up the wrong tree (wouldn't be the first time).

You can get by with being small if you have elite speed, which Sherels does. Lewis doesn't even have average speed, let alone elite. It's nothing against the kid, because you can see that he's trying his hardest, but he's just not a Division I football player. There are reasons other than talent and football knowledge that Kill is playing him so much. I don't know what those reasons are, but common sense dictates that there's at least one person, if not several, on the roster who should be playing instead of him.
