Tyus Jones, a 6-foot-1 freshman point guard from Apple Valley (MN) High, made a name for himself locally as an eighth grade starter for the Eagles. However, Jones figures to earn more of a national reputation after he recently traveled to Colorado Springs as 31 of the nation's top 14 and 15 year old players competed in the USA Basketball Developmental National Team mini-camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Jones was considered one of the top players and he will likely earn consideration for the U.S, 16-and-under national team next summer. GopherHole.com caught up with Jones this past weekend at the Minnetonka Fall League to talk about the experience and his upcoming season.

How is this kid so well spoken and humble? He's a FRESHMAN in high school and that mature. Good for Tyus and hopefully he keeps working hard!

stay away ROY! did anyone catch the part where it said jones and his family sat next to smith at the football game? the WISCONSIN OSU GAME IN MADISON?!?!? thats kinda weird... idk what to make of that. we really need to land him, but it would be hard to turn down the likes of kansas, north carolina, duke, syracuse, florida, kentucky, osu, msu as im sure he'll get all of those offers. go gophers?

Let's hope Tubby leads the Gophers to a couple of great seasons and makes is easier for Tyus to join the fun at the barn in a few years. For those that haven't seen Tyus play, I would encourage you to check him out this season. He is fun to watch.

If we can get to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament, I think the U would be a little more enticing for Tyus Jones. Sell him on the idea that we need him to lead us to the Final Four.

I took it like this...
"Jones attended the Gopher-USC football game as his family sat with Smith and the Wisconsin-Ohio State game in Madison. "

Two separate events, with Smith not being at the Wiscy game.

Call me a dinosaur, but if the kid likes and is good at football and baseball, it saddens me that he is not playing them at age 14. Basketball can still be number one, but at that age, it would be nice to see the kids playing other sports, too.

I understand the mentality of specialization, but I do think kids miss out on a lot by doing it so young.

Agree with.....

Holy Man....love to see the great athlete compete in 2 or 3 sports. Let them sppecialize when they get to college. It didn't hurt Joe Mauer

Agreed. I say play both or all 3 sports. I understand the decision, though. Its already apparent that this kid has the talent to play pro ball and I suppose focusing on basketball will help him get there. As for our shot, I won't get roped into this again like I did with SH (although he would've come here if not for 'outside factors')

From Howard Pulley - Tyus' fifth grade brother Tre is said to be even quicker. Would be great to have have the Jones brothers play for Minnesota.

Tyus Jones, the 6-foot-1 Apple Valley High School freshman basketball prodigy, is back from Colorado Springs, after a tryout for the USA junior national team, with whom he excelled and is expected to receive a callback for workouts next June.

Jones' high school team plays games against Hopkins and Holy Angels in the informal Minnetonka league that begins Sunday morning and runs through next month before the regular high school league starts.

Jones, 14, hasn't received Division I college offers yet, but the Gophers are infatuated with the point guard, and he'll have a tender from Minnesota, and many other Division I schools, if he chooses. Jones attended the Gophers' "midnight madness" opening practice at Williams Arena last week.

Jones has a fifth-grade brother, Tre Jones, who is also a point guard and plays with seventh-graders for an Apple Valley traveling league coached by former Minnesota Timberwolf Gary Trent. Tre is said to be quicker than Tyus, though Tyus might dispute that.

Fifth grade brother? LOL! Tubby better get in on him soon or else the likes of Crean and Gillispie will strike!

Or Bud Grant or Dave Winfield even in college.

Hahaha! If Gillispie could offer a fetus, he'd do it.

Wasn't LeBron an all state WR in HS? As a high school teacher and coach, I am always pushing guys to play other sports. They are kids!! I know this is a special circumstance, but you only go through high school once in a lifetime. Regardless of what happens, 15 years down the road will Tyus regret the decision to quit the other sports to focus on basketball? There are no re-dos on your teenage years.

Tyus Jones got his first official offer from Iowa this week.

"Tyus Jones got his first official offer from Iowa this week."

no doubt that was due to Duez and his coaching and personal relationship with Jones and his family, and as far as this being his first offer, don't think so, that came over a year ago but that school:)D) didn't run to the media with it.

No doubt it's because the kid is really good. Iowa doesn't throw out offers because his mom's boyfriend (albeit an alum) says offer him.
