Chris Monter: Bemidji Senior Ernie Heifort Wants Gopher Offer

Doesn't sound like putting weight on him shouldn't be a problem since some people call him "Little Ernie".

To the guy saying he has Big Ten linebacker speed, he doesn't. I would bet he runs a 4.75-4.85 laser timed, which wouldn't get it done. He is a good tackler though, smart, and has a huge body. If he could put on weight they could definitely find a position for him.

Not that it matters, but that speed is definitely enough to play LBer in the Big 10.

Per the combine results:
Lee Campbell ran a 4.89
Triplett ran a 4.74
Navarro Bowman 4.72
Pat Angerer 4.70
Brian Cushing 4.79
James Lauriniatis 4.82
Ray Maualuga 4.83

I think the problem is that people don't realize what realistic times are. If this kid at 17 was really 6'3", 230 lbs and ran a 4.85 40, he would absolutely be perfect size and speed for a Big 10 MLB recruit.

Most likely (since it's being debated about his speed), he ran a 40 closer to 5.0 to 5.1.

I believe Lee Campbell ran around a 4.8 (or so). A lot depends on scheme, but Bob_Loblaw is right. It's certainly not too slow to play LB in the Big 10.

If he really has that kind of speed, he would be a great strongside combo outside backer in a 3-4....a la Damarcus Ware (granted I am not saying he is anything close to Damarcus Ware).

Coach Butler

like Coach Butler said! You can be fast straight up the field, but that does not make you a great football player! If you have a nose for the ball and lateral speed you are exceptional!

I would like to see Ulferts get a shot as a preferred walk-on. I coach basketball at one of Shakopee's rivals and saw him do a huge windmill dunk during fall AAU. He would have to bulk up a lot, but the kid has a huge amount of athleticism that was not shown in the ridiculous offense they ran.

Ulferts went for 10 yards everytime he touched the ball playing 5A teams. He was being described as phenomenal by more than one reporter. It will be interesting indeed to see how Kill does in establishig a preferred walk-on program.

From what I have heard from you guys and from a couple other people I know who've seen this kid, we might as well just offer this kid. He might be only a 2 star type of athlete from rivals, but it reminds me of the way people talked about Rallis before he came here. I know a few people who coached against him or saw him play a lot and they kept talking about how they hoped he'd walk on here because he will be a starting Big 10 LBer someday. I'd rather just offer the kid if he's that good.

Yeah, not to say anything on whether or not Heifort has the speed to play in the Big Ten, but anyone who is actually running a 4.75 40 has the speed to play outside linebacker in the NFL.
