To the guy saying he has Big Ten linebacker speed, he doesn't. I would bet he runs a 4.75-4.85 laser timed, which wouldn't get it done. He is a good tackler though, smart, and has a huge body. If he could put on weight they could definitely find a position for him.
I would like to see Ulferts get a shot as a preferred walk-on. I coach basketball at one of Shakopee's rivals and saw him do a huge windmill dunk during fall AAU. He would have to bulk up a lot, but the kid has a huge amount of athleticism that was not shown in the ridiculous offense they ran.
Not that it matters, but that speed is definitely enough to play LBer in the Big 10.
Per the combine results:
Lee Campbell ran a 4.89
Triplett ran a 4.74
Navarro Bowman 4.72
Pat Angerer 4.70
Brian Cushing 4.79
James Lauriniatis 4.82
Ray Maualuga 4.83
I think the problem is that people don't realize what realistic times are. If this kid at 17 was really 6'3", 230 lbs and ran a 4.85 40, he would absolutely be perfect size and speed for a Big 10 MLB recruit.
Most likely (since it's being debated about his speed), he ran a 40 closer to 5.0 to 5.1.
I guess the way these kids were timed by the scouts must have been off then........ Going by the numbers that I saw written down, but I guess the fact that they didn't use laser timers disqualifies what I saw.
