Chip Scoggins column: Symptoms say U hoops needs another rebirth

Wait, Clem didn't have a practice facility, and that wasn't 40 years ago.

People forget, he had a below .500 career record in the Big Ten and was 39-69 in the B1G his first six seasons. Not trying to discredit his success or anything, but it's not like we were a good team every year. We had two very good seasons under him, and most of the rest were average/below average.

You don't hear John Anderson bring up everytime he loses a game." Well, if we only had a new stadium"

I didn't realize Tubby brought it up every time we lose.

Clem was handed a worse situation than even Monson in terms of roster. The roster he inherited was beyond bad. He was 6-30 with that team his first two years in the Big Ten so that skews the record. The good part is that he took that same core and made it to the Sweet 16 and then Elite 8. Clem had at least 6 season finishing in the top 5 in the Big Ten and that's a record that Tubby would LOVE to have since Tubby has zero top 5 finishes.

Clem cheated and that's awful. But what he put on the court in terms of teamwork, toughness and player development was light years ahead of this. Clem had guys that would come into the program looking like Tubby's guys and leave looking like men who had spent their lives in the weight room. Not so today. We get pushed around.

I agree with what BGA said and I think a lot of what he pointed out is why so many people at GH and GI are such big Gopher basketball fans today. The memories of the Sweet 16 in 89, Elite in 90, the Final Four year, three other NCAA tourneys and a pair of NIT titles, combine that with the toughness and improvement, that's why people of that era fell in love with Gopher hoops. It's why people were so hurt when what happened happened. The program used to have such an identity in so many areas. How many of you went to Clem Haskins camp? And why did you go? That's exactly what I mean.

EVERYONE went to Clem's camp!!! EVERYONE! We all had the "Play Hard" Gopher shorts, Yvette knew many repeat campers by name even if it had been a full year since the last time we saw her, Coach Kos would impress us with his over the shoulder/behind the back trick shots, etc. Now summer camps aren't as big of a deal as they were in the 80s/90s with the national nature of AAU ball now, but those were some good times for sure. I sprinkled in Green Lake's Camp, Pooh's Camp and even Flip's Camp at Benilde but nothing touched Clem's Camp.

The "good old days" don't have to be relegated to the past - it absolutely can happen again and The Barn can rock again like we all remember, but we're a long ways from that right now.

Go Gophers!!

Just a few notes:

Tubby won 20 win seasons back to back (FIRST EVER BY ANY GOPHER COACH)
Tubby advanced to the big ten championship (FIRST EVER BY ANY GOPHER COACH)
Tubby won 80 games in 4 seasons with the gophers (FIRST EVER BY ANY GOPHER COACH)

Sorry. Your numbers need to be put in context:

Average number of games played per season by coach:
- Tubby (1st 4 years): 33.25
- Monson (including final year): 31 (2.25 less than Tubby)
- Haskins (all years, cuz I paid for them): 31.15 (2.1 less than Tubby)
- Dutcher (including Mitch Lee year): 28.54 (nearly 5 less than Tubby)
- Musselman: 25.25 (8 less than Tubby)

So, congrats to Tubby on playing 32 more games in his first four seasons than Musselman did.

Also:
- Clem had back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back 20+ win seasons. It happened. I paid for the tickets.
- Clem won 91 games in 4 seasons. Again, it happened.
- If you don't like counting Clem, then count Dutcher. He won 81 games from '79-'80 to '82-'83 (despite playing 120 games in those seasons compared to Tubby's 133)
- Musselman and Dutcher apologize for not advancing to the championship of a tournament that didn't exist when they coached...but they'd like to point out that they each won the marathon when the sprint didn't exist.

It "happened" only because he cheated. What would Tubby's record look like he had been cheating? Nolen never would've been suspended. Joseph would never have to go to class. Royce would've played right away under Clem. Imagine the recruiting he could do with guarantee of eligibility.

How do you know for sure he's not? I had no clue Clem was cheating. Can you tell just because we stink? :)

The mild mannered Jim Dutcher's self expectation was to compete for the Big Ten championship once every four years. Not win it- but be in the hunt for it one in four. I think that's fair. Rebuild- train- improve- make a run.

I think it's more ridiculous to say something is ridiculous, and not say why.

What has EE shown to prove that he is an NBA caliber player? He has little to zero offensive game outside of 3 feet, and even that is suspect. His lateral quickness on defense is very poor, and I would say that he is far from athletically gifted. The kid has heart and tries hard don't get me wrong, and I realize he is just a freshman, but Spencer Tollackson was light years ahead of EE as a freshman, and look where he ended up. I would be down right shocked if EE sniffed an NBA roster at any point in his career. Again, don't take this response as a personal attack, just giving my opinion.
