Another way to look at this. Minnesota's 4 Big Ten wins and the 3 point shooting for both teams
Iowa 10-30 Minnesota 17-43
Michigan State 6-25 Minnesota 6-25
Ohio State 7-27 Minnesota 9-22
Michigan 6-22 Minnesota 4-18
In their wins, only Iowa has shot adequately from 3 against the Gophers. The Iowa game was the Gophers best 3 point shooting game and the only one of the 4 where the shooting made a difference. They had 2 blowout wins while shooting terribly from behind the arc.
In Minnesota's 5 losses
Minnesota 7-28 Illinos 7-19
Minnesota 7-31 Wisconsin 6-15
Minnesota 7-28 Michigan 4-13
Minnesota 10-34 Iowa 9-14
Minnesota 5-23 Maryland 8-23
All 5 of these were blowout losses and the Gophers didn't shoot well in any of them from 3. In 2 of the 5 losses, the Gophers opponent shot well from 3, 2 they shot around average, and in one they were poor. However look at the attempts. In 3 of the 5 games the opponent shot less than 1/2 the number of 3's as the Gophers. I'd argue this points towards defense. These teams were obviously getting in to the paint often and not having to settle for jumpers. Look at the Michigan games: In the loss Michigan attempted 13 3's while in the win Michigan attempted 22. It holds true for the Iowa games as well: In the loss Iowa attempted 14 3's and in the win they attempted 30. The Gophers have had two blowout wins when shooting less than 25% from 3 ...and they've also been blown out shooting that percentage.
We'd like them to shoot better, but the ease in which our opponents are able to get in to (and score) the paint seems to have a lot more to do with W's and L's for this team than their own 3 point shooting percentage.
