That was 6-foot-8, 240-pound Gophers football redshirt freshman Rashede Hageman wearing a "Superman" jacket on campus Wednesday. Hageman said he's fine with the switch from tight end to defensive end for next season.

"I'm really not the blocking type," he said. "I'm more the aggressive type."

Nice to have an update on his size and weight. His Rivals profile has him at 6'6", 251. His Gophersports.com roster information has him at 6'6" 276. I wonder what the truth actually is. I like the thought of him at defensive end and think he will be an impact player right away there. As I recall, Florida and OSU et al. were recruiting him as a DE and we wanted him as a TE (at least that was what Timmy told him).

RaShede's college coaches have mentioned during interviews this fall that he is getting close to 290#.

The Shooter's figure of 240# is from when 'Shede was a junior in high school.

Note to Shooter: Gotta update the data base!;)

Switching Postions

I know every program does it, but is it actually worth it to tell a recruit that we are going to play you at a position (say TE) like Hageman, and then switch him to DE right away. Doesn't that make the player angry and maybe transfer or at least not play up to his potential? I know the Gophers have switched a lot of guys around, but is that a good idea?

When Hageman leaves I will be worried about it.
You bring him in, and if you told him he would play TE you let him play tight end. But you try to change his mind if it is in the teams best interest. I am sure they asked him to switch positions, I don't think they told him and he objected but they forced him.

It is a good idea when you give the player the option. And if you clearly communicate the option includes putting that player in a position that is a more natural fit for them athletically and gives them the best opportunity to pursue a professional career, that player will likely take that option.

Campbell worked out pretty well.

I think Hageman asked last fall if he could switch because he thought me might be able to help the team better. No matter how he got there, if he's NFL bound it's better to be a DE than a TE.

This is good for everybody. DE is a much more impactful position than TE. That means it is good for the team because we have another pass rusher while at the same time being good for Hageman, because he will probably draw more looks as a DE than a TE. This is of course contingent on his performance.

Now that I have that out of the way, can anyone else say Julius Peppers? Clearly, the comparison is utterly premature, but of all of the Brewster's recruits, this guy seems to be one of the potential studs.

Our Dline is going to be very good once we get a little experience. so are the LB's. It may be painful watching the mistakes at first but the payoff should be a beautiful thing.

I think the key is giving the kid a chance to play the position he prefers and then introduced to other options if it appears likely that earlier playing time and longer term success at another position are probable. These young men want a chance to play on Saturday and the earlier the better. I'm all for bringing in quality athletes and working with them to find their best positions. It appears that both the coaching staff and Hageman now feel his future is at DE. Can anyone confirm that Hageman redshirted last year? I thought he played a few snaps early in the year.

I'm pretty sure he RS'd. Although if someone told me otherwise I wouldn't argue to heavily.

I've never heard of a 290 lb TE, and who admittedly stated he's not much of the "blocking type" of player. Clearly he outgrew the position and is best suited for DE.

He's been my favorite Brewster recruit so far-that includes Gray. No idea if he will live up to the new hype, but I'm looking forward to seeing him try.

Me too - well, he was certainly my favorite of his class, and he's neck and neck with Gray in my book. I think out of his class, throughout his Gopher Career, he will excel the most and make the greatest impact. I'm a huge Ra'Shede fan.

Gopherlady- Do you still have the ability to contact him? Would love to know his actual height and weight

Good idea - I just asked his Dad and he said 6’6”, 282 pounds, so I'd go with that.

Thanks for clearing that up! I posted the info because it seemed so far off from what I had expected. 6'8" sounded too tall and 240 sounded way too thin. 6'6", 282 is a four down DE in the league...

Brewster tells the kids "You'll have the opportunity to show us what you can do at your preferred position."

i.e. You'll get a shot, unlike the other schools, but we're not guaranteeing anything.

In the Hageman case I believe after practicing at both positions Hageman had the option to remain at TE, but he realized his future was at DE and went that route.

He's damn near outgrown the DE position. We'll have to see him in game to judge his quickness, but 290 is a husky DE.

Gopher Lady a question

Can you ask Hageman's dad who his dad is? A friend of my dad is Will Hageman. This could be a very small world, or nothing.

He definately doesn't want to get any bigger than that. His development focus should probably be on quickness and agility as apposed to bulk if he is going to stay at DE.
