Charles Buggs?

Have to wonder a bit what the future looks like for Buggs. If he didn't go to prep school and take a redshirt year, he'd be a Senior next year. I think some of the fundamental issues he has on the court are troubling given his experience. The weight issue might always be there as some people just have a genetic makeup that makes it difficult to add weight. If the Iowa game didn't happen, I think most everyone would still be expecting a transfer. But that game did happen, and we all saw glimpses of a player who could help this team a lot if he could consistently play at that level.

As it stands, I don't think we want to lose any more players. This class is already going to be huge and we still have 3 openings. Otherwise I could have seen a Buggs transfer as likely.

Buggs came in one game and made what, three 3's?

What else has he done?

He was very active defensively in that game and brought an energy to the front court that we didn't have all season. In the front of the press, he was much more disruptive than King/Oto. He also got out and ran in transition and had a nice finish that King/Oto haven't shown capable of doing. I'd say it's much more likely that game was an aberration than an indication of future performances, but if he's on the roster we have to hope that the Iowa game was a sign of things to come.

+1 It's going to be hard enough filling 3 openings with quality players in the spring, even with the now-burgeoning "transfer market."

It would be bad news to have any more Gopher transfers, and my "watch" isn't limited to Buggs. Other than Mathieu and Joey King, I could speculate on conceivable reasons why every other returning player might be a candidate to transfer (their decision). Hopefully none do.

My biggest fear is Andre Hollins..... I have no huntch, just the fact that he doesn't seem to be as happy as he once was... May not get along with Rich...

I get what you are saying but I just don't see it. He'd have to have a pretty big rift with Richard imo. He is the face of the team, Carlson poster child, and has a GF here.

I hope Andre isn't on track to graduate in 3 years, which would give him another option. It would be a killer to lose him.

Just can't see him leaving, though, not as long as he's dating Rachel Banham. I hope they're still an item!

I could see EE transferring since he has started a lot but may be falling behind Mo in Pitinos pecking order.

He may realize his best position is PG also. Sit out a year as a transfer, then start at another school like Iverson did to improve his NBA stock. I wouldn't be surprised if we see additional movement.

Andre isn't going anywhere. He'd have to sit out a year and only have one year of eligibility left. Not to mention him and Rachel Banham seem pretty serious. And from what I can tell, Andre loves this school. His season was going pretty well until he got injured. Even if he doesn't get along great with Pitino, I can't see him hating him so badly that he wants to leave.

I just can not see Andre Hollins transferring. I think his general demeanor and poor play can be contributed to frustrations with the ankle injury and how it is quite noticeably limiting his play and effectiveness on both ends of the court. He was asked to come back pretty quickly from a pretty nasty looking ankle injury. Hopefully he can take the off season to right the ship, so to speak, because we will certainly need him to be the player he has been before the injury next season, IMO.

I still say he will be the 3rd player to leave the team.

Agreed. EE is the only other I wouldn't be surprised about.

I know Buggs really liked Tubby and probably wasn't thrilled they fired him. Remember he was the only player to miss Pitino's opening PC (granted the reason given was class), the Star Tribune article mentioned he contemplated transferring, and Pitino has talked about that he wasn't following their diet plan.

EE is just more of an "odd man out" theory. Same as when Colton and Ralph were both seniors at the same position and Colton left. EE seems to be losing more and more time to Mo. He may decide he is okay with a backup role for his senior year, but I wouldn't be shocked if he decides he'd rather play at a lower level school and see more minutes. Especially if he is close to graduating being he's been here four years now.

Just my $.02.

Good point. Andre was doing very well in the Non-Conf. We had a thread arguing if he could average 20 per game.

I do wonder what is hampering him now though. How much is injury? How much is it just him not trusting himself/his body lately with the slump? And is there any problem with Pitino/the system?
Last year he was the primary ball handler and he isn't anymore. Regardless if he's a point guard or not. He had the ball in his hands much more often last year.

I'd still say it's not likely, but it certainly isn't a "no way" sort of thing.

He had situations this year when he got to be the primary ballhandler and it didn't seem to help his play. That argument is weak. The system has nothing to do with his careless ballhandling and terrible shooting. A player performs poorly and all of a sudden it's because he can't get along with the coaches? Another weak argument. It's either his ankle or confidence or a combination of both.
EE isn't going anywhere and neither is Dre. Better chance Buggs leaves imo.

Ya but,

Rachel is not lighting it up either. Her last eight games: 1 for 17, 11 for 30, 7 for 22, 5 for 14, 5 for 22, 4 for 12,
12 for 19 vs Green Bay, yeah!, and 5 for 14 with 11 points in 25 minutes and hurt. It seems contagious.

Good games in their next games would help a lot!!

You called 3 a long time ago and Buggs would indeed be the third ... but what makes you think that? Pitino seems to love his potential, has talked him up as a possible pro, and has preached the necessity of patience in his development, so it doesn't seem like Pitino would push him out. And as far as Buggs goes, he's already had a redshirt year so by transferring would lose a year of eligibility, he plays on a team that seems to suit his style and has a gaping hole at his position, and a coach who wants to work with him. You could say he wants more PT, but if he transfers he gets exactly 0 PT next year, and might have been starting here by his jr year. So what leads you to repeat the prediction that Buggs could leave?

Dre is clearly still hurt. He has no lateral movement on D, his usual height on his jump shot is gone, and he's barely even attempted to drive since the injury. He's become a catch and shoot guy when that's never been his game

I'm guessing you already said this somewhere, but who are your three? Are you counting Oto as leaving? If you aren't, your prediction of three is insane. I'd be extremely surprised if more than one player left.

Not sure if TF is the same guy, but the guy I'm thinking of said 3 would leave before Gets-3s-blocked-into-the-top-of-his-head-from-behind quit on the team and Oto got hurt, so that would be the 2, I imagine.

When Otto has a lousy game the clowns come out and say play Buggs , when Buggs does nothing the clowns blame it on another player. Objective logic is a gift not all have.

It's sad that Oto has been with us for nearly 4 full seasons and you have yet to learn how to spell his name.

Dre

I totally agree also keep in mind that last year pg's were guarding him so players anywhere from about 5'11" to 6'2". Now at the off guard he is defended by probably just as quick players but now they are 6'3" to 6'6", so he needs even greater seperation to get his shot off.

+1 He looks so slow, it's painful to watch him right now. And he has zero lift. He'll come back next year and be just fine. I will say his confidence is shot too, you can see that on his FT's - just not the same as before.

We will need a bit of the old Dre to win the NIT, that is for sure. We no longer have the Barn advantage!

I'm afraid he just isn't going to be that productive this year, very sad, the fact he isn't able to create situations where he gets fouled and gets to the line is telling, even when his shot was off he was always able to do that, needs a summer to recover.
