CBS' Tim Brando goes on Twitter rant ripping Gophers

1. Minnesota you are on the clock - FACT
2. Tubby takes a ton in the buyout - FACT
3. No, scratch that. It was vacated. - FACT
4. Minnesota let a good coach go - FACT
5. He wanted the best for his players and university - FACT
6. the Gophers basketball facilities can't compete w/ others in BIG10 - FACT
7. he [Tubby] expected better - FACT
8. It's not easy when there's only one floor to practice on - FACT
9. Smith was promised it [practice facility] - FACT
10. Never happened - FACT
11. NO SHAKA means more $$ for him - FACT
12. He inherited a huge mess - FACT
13. even Monson couldn't get out from under - FACT
14. The program was in complete disarray - FACT

If by "1", you meant "14", then yes!

(He could've better stated the "last win came under Haskins" part, but it was obvious he was referring to 1997 and not 1990.)

Yeah, you can get to 14 if you count opinions!

Yes, but dpdoll knows everything about everything.

So the verifiable facts that Dpo is giving to Brando are:

We are on the clock for a coach.
We had a NCAA win vacated with Clem.
We have bad facilities.
We paid Tubby a buyout.

The fact that a nobody play-by-play guy has his own two page thread is evidence this search is as hush hush as possible.

Somebody should just ask him if Minnesota fans and players should just accept being mediocre and be happy with it. As I recall, when he was asked that question a few days ago the conversation magically ended...

Before you toss around the word "mediocre" u should wait and see who the replacement coach is...just sayin

Oh, he's not a nobody. He was almost the host of Wheel of Fortune:

In 1989, Brando, who loves game shows, was a finalist to host the NBC version of the syndicated Wheel of Fortune, but that job went to former San Diego Chargers placekicker Rolf Benirschke. (Benirschke hosted for only a few months; Bob Goen replaced him and continued as host until the program was cancelled in 1991.)

Too bad he got beat out by an NFL kicker. I'll bet dimes to donuts that if you asked him point blank how many winning conference seasons Tubby had in the Big10 over the past 6 years, he'd say, "At least 4."

1. Minnesota you are on the clock - FACT- Every team looking for a coach is on the clock

4. Minnesota let a good coach go - FACT - Minnesota let a guy who used to be a good coach go.
5. He wanted the best for his players and university - FACT -So did we

7. he [Tubby] expected better - FACT - So did we
8. It's not easy when there's only one floor to practice on - FACT - It wasn't a problem in November though early January.

11. NO SHAKA means more $$ for him - FACT - So ?
12. He inherited a huge mess - FACT - Tubby had 6 years to straighten it out.

Changed it for you - that cut the list in half.

Did you intentionally miss the point or are you really not understanding what I said?

There must be a cure for frothing at the mouth. Tubby was a disappointment year after year, collapsing in the Big Ten season after season, having player relation problems, erratic up and down performances, in game confusions, etc. Bottom line: a losing record in the Big Ten that was no better in his fifth and sixth seasons.

Well we shall see where Tubby ends up. Remember when we fired Mason? I believe there were some similar threads out there as we are seeing for Tubby......and where did Mason end up coaching?

Well, where has the football program been since they extended, bought out and fired Mason? I'd say maybe "similar threads out there..." were pretty right on the money. Coach Kill is doing a good job and he still has a long ways to go to get back to the Mason level of turning out All-Americans, All-Big Ten, and being more competitive in conference play than we currently have been. And...we need to be BIG enough to take our medicine when it is pretty understandable that others might be critical. We did the extending...buying out...and firing...

cripes: what do you think people are going to say when they feel badly for their friend and sour new norwood didn't have anybody lined up to replace Tubby here. Hopefully things will work out...but it is NOT a slam dunk that we will fare any better now...or...we might not even fare any where near as well since our ad extended, bought out and fired Tubby.

I don't think it is strange at all that there is a LOT of criticism coming back at our new norwood and our athletic department and our Men's Hoops Program as a result of the moves that were made and the way they were made. Our new norwood has a LONG way to go to dig-out-from-under THIS mess...

I'm going to reserve judgement until I see who Norwood hires.

I'm sick of two things:

1. People who haven't paid close attention to every single game for the last three years criticizing the Tubby firing. They clearly don't know why he was fired...they are just looking at records and NCAA appearances as the measuring stick.

2. People who assume that ALL of Clem's tenure was vacated.

I respect Tubby but it was time. Early in the year at 12-1 I kept fearing a second half of the season collapse. I was hoping and considering that this team wouldn't do that. But it happened again. Six years in a row. That is not a practice facility, it is not players. It is the coach. The gophers have the worst record in the Big Ten for the second half of the conference season the last six years.

What exactly do people disagree with so much in that? I don't see what was so inaccurate. I think Tubby underachieved, but unless we actually hire a significantly better coach, I would've rather kept him until we at least started building that damn practice facility.

And what is this Brando ish "I am on record.....?" Like we are suppose to engrave these words on Mt Rushmore, stand up, suck in our gut and salute him, or ignore anything else he has ever said except these (in his mind) recondite thoughts of his? Or is he simply a great basketball oracle that I can't see?

He made some valid points about the practice facilities, but Tim Brando did not watch much of Tubby over the past few years if he thinks this is our biggest issue. Practice facilities hurt your ability to recruit, they don't lead to mass attrition, unwatchable execution and total meltdowns every single season.

Practice facilities are needed, but these old idiots are friends with Tubby and want to blame something else for his lack of success. The same practice facilities had THIS team at #9 in the country that eventually had us seeded #9 in the BT Tournament. Tubby did a poor job. How many years in a row did he have to wither away in the Big 10 for us to realize that Tubby was part of the problem?

Exactly. We need better practice facilities to compete on an even footing with the rest of the Big Ten. Understood. However, the lack of practice facilities doesn't excuse Tubby from doing a piss poor job of coaching what he has. I'm pretty sure that they still had enough court time to put in a couple of inbound plays.

Exactly.

People need to stop being so crazy about this whole thing. It was just his (tubby) time, I thought Brennan's article on the situation for ESPN summed it up perfectly. I thought he was a solid enough guy who definitely caught some bad breaks, but it was time for a new direction. We saw the ceiling for Tubby's teams here and the aggravating part of his tenure was by the end of the season the teams got worse and even more distressing was the players looked lost and uninspired.

Lastly, I am so sick of people thinking the Gophers should just be fine with being mediocre. Sure year-in and year-out it is tough to compete with the Mich St., Ohio St., and Indianas but there is no reason why every 5 years the Gophers shouldn't be able to make a run for a conference title. This was Tubby's year and team with enough talent to make that run and he mismanaged them this year badly. He is shown the door and it was the right decision.

Also Teague has a track record of hiring the right coach for the right college. Jesus people give him a chance.

I don't know what alternate universe we are in right now but I agree with dpo.

It's easy to s*** all over Tubby now but it's not like he was a bad coach, more than anything he was the wrong guy for Minnesota right now. Everyone agrees he should've gotten more out of this year's team but you can't go after the guy for having the best* (non-vacated) season the program has had in awhile. He's over the hill as far as his coaching ability is concerned and Teague made the right call to presumably bring in someone who is younger and hungrier.

Tubby fell into our laps last time, and he left the program in a better place then when he got here. Take a second to appreciate that and then re-evaluate where the program is.

Well said, and if the next coach gets us to a higher level I would go as far as to say that it happens because of Tubby's six years here. I wouldn't want to be recruiting the team six years ago vs today with due thanks to Tubby's work. He did Minnesota a great deed joining Minnesota when he did.

I don't disagree with what he's saying, I disagree with him saying it. He's a play-by-play guy, not an analyst. And he seems to be taking this very personally from some reason that baffles me. The guy is going on these rants based on watching the Gophers play twice in a weekend, he's probably seen them play 5 times total during Tubby's tenure.

I think we all agree about this.

Doogie said around 6:30 on 1500 that he felt Teague and Ellis pretty much made up their mind months ago that Tubby had to go, at least by Feb, maybe shortly after they got here. Mentions some meeting with donors at J D Hoyt's quite awhile back.

Frankly, I'd never heard of Tim Brando until a week ago. After doing some quick research, apparently, he has a radio show. He's been trying to goad Gopher fans into calling into his show to defend Tubby's firing. Turns out this isn't the first time he's used Twitter to try and drum up publicity for his radio show. From the looks of this link, he flat out lied about comments Urban Meyer made to try and stir up trouble and get a rise out of Buckeye fans.

A couple days ago I posted a thread in here regarding some earlier tweets from Brando. They were similar in nature. Check out the thread National Media Types. I will have to find it and bump it. He and I went back and forth for a couple of hours. I know someone said we should ask him if Minnesota should settle for mediocrity. I did that very thing. He then accused me of having a chip on my shoulder. Basically saying we are Minnesota and should be happy for what we had because scandals, facilities, etc. etc. etc. He clearly hasn't seen much Gopher basketball in Tubby's tenure.

Wow, Brando sure is good at one and only one thing: being very unprofessional.

His play calling the other night for the UCLA game was simply brutal. He had no idea what he was talking about. The call for the Florida game wasn't quite as bad, but he's calling games for the NCAA Tournament, not for Conference Dinkydoo. He really needs to do better at preparation.

As for these Tweets of his, shame on him. Publicity stunt? Perhaps. But he's acting like a 2-year-old, laughing at Minnesota fans for acting like 2-year-olds. It's really quite disconcerting. He seems like he would fit in well on Fox News because he's a moron, but otherwise he really doesn't belong on the national media stage.

J.D. Hoyts you say. Did Sid recommend firing Tubby and then forgot he did?
