Can we get a list of all the posters who thought Claeys was the right hire?

Fire the coach after loss one. A very clear display, indeed.

to borrow from a Stephen Sondheim musical, i think it might have been intended more as a "So it's your fault!"

or maybe a search for a different multiverse

What other option was available besides hiring Claeys? It isn't like we have a long bench of coaches wanting to come here. Isn't like we have a long history of successful coaching hires. Isn't like we had an AD to make the hire. This threat is stupid.

Claeys was the only choice without an AD. But the problem is it also took 10 months to hire an AD.

Maryland and Rutgers are comparable programs to Minnesota. They were both able to land top assistants from helmet schools. Will they be good head coaches? Only time will tell. But both schools are currently in the top 25 for recruiting.

This is the absolute worst reason to hire a coach. There are literally tens of thousands of coaches in the country. The university should be searching the country to find the best one. Even if Minnesota is the worst power 5 job in the country (it isn't) that would still make it a top 70 job in the country (putting Notre Dame, BYU, and pick 4 more non P5 schools you want (because their coach would hold out for a top 20 job offer). If you include NFL it is still a top 100-150 job in the country (depending on if you think an NFL coordinator job is better than a P5 head job).

The u of m doesn't have the clout or pocketbook to land a top 10 type of head coach. But there is no excuse not to have one of the best 100 coaches in the country.

Who can we get? We can literally any active coach plus some retired coaches who might want back in on the planet excluding at most 150 people.

Very rough season for all the Claey haters.Had to live through 3 gopher victories,a bye week, and survive an overtime to fire off their time to replace the coach bs

Dude, it's hard enough to figure out which top assistants will be good head coaches. How in the HECK could the U of M look at a thousand possible candidates and find the top 10??????

BOOM!

He was based on timing and contract. Without an AD in place we essentially gave him a one year deal to make a Jan 1 bowl game or Coyle has the opportunity to bring in his guy.

The same way every company in the entire world hires people to be managers and CEOs?

Let's see who is right. What do you think the season record will be? Give me a two game range and tell me if that will make you happy.
I am going to say 7-5 And that it won't make me happy

Some guy, you are right, however the decision won't come until December. Coyle will make the call then.

You are confused...and that's OK. Just take some deep breaths and try to regain some composure. We had no AD, were dealing a federal investigation, had a new President and were pretty much in total disarray. Who was going to make this top 10 hire, or top 50 hire or whatever? Who was going to run the search? And so we were going to get locked into a top asst who would require a 5 year $15 million deal before we hired an AD? It just wasn't going to happen. So relax, it is just one more year in 56 years we aren't going to win the National Title. You act like we just replaced Saban with Claeys and we are at risk of ending our dynasty.

I hated the loss, thought we had every opportunity to win and also realize that we are not a top 30 team and our recruits are barely top 50 and nothing you or I do is going to change that this year. If Claeys grows and steps up (which I hope) then he probably gets an extension. If not, and at year end we are sitting at 6-6 and going to poulan weedeater pizza bowl in Battle Creek, MI then I fully expect Claeys to get fired and rehired at Kansas as Asst HC/D Coordinator with a plan for him to take over down there in a couple of years and Coyle will go for a new hire.

I think they should all post in this thread so we can identify them. It will be a very clear display of who understands Gopher Football and who doesn't.

I thought at the time he was the right hire, and I still think so now.

A clear display of those who don't no sh!t about sh!t is posting this drivel after the first loss this season. Get over yourself.

Couldn't disagree more. Our fan base is way too accepting of losing and content with moral victories against the big boys. If we don't win 9+ games this season, when will it happen?

Nah, it's just that if you're not extremely pissed after every loss, then you're okay with it. I'm frustrated we lost. We shouldn't have. The season is not over.

Either way, what does it matter? Does flying off the handle on a message board affect anything? It's like some people think we're going to be a good program if we get the pitchforks out after every loss. Being a fan is supposed to be fun. I'm going to enjoy it no matter how good or bad it is.

It's ridiculous to suggest firing a coach after a game.

It's insane not to look at the long-term trend over three seasons.

It's downward. Here's hoping it will reverse!

Would you like them to sew golden Ms to their clothing so you can spot them in public too Mr Hitler?

Completely agree. No matter what Claeys will coach through end of season. So we can judge then. We're not very good and won't be getting better as the season goes on. If we lose our next two games, I'd be all in for starting whoever will be QB next year. Only if we lose next two though.

You are hilarious!!! Good gosh!!! Lose the next two and guarantee losing the rest AND then decide if you are hiring a new coach!!! Brilliant!!!! And as AD you are telling the coach that? Insane.
Edit: And because of course the quarterback is the problem!!! And he and the other seniors have given you nothing!!! They don't deserve to finish their careers. Just wow!!!

I agree we're not very good. I disagree we can't get better. We have JUCOs, Fr, and So all over the field. New O and D coordinators, and a 1st year HC. If you believe this staff can coach 'em up, then you believe the team can improve during the season. I'm personally skeptical, but given the circumstances, I don't think we're necessarily doomed to see the weeks 1 - 4 mediocrity all season...

So, following your logic, we should, instead of Red Shirting both of the current back-ups with a future, play them. For a coach that will be fired. In a system that will be gone, because that will give them what exactly? I'm really curious why you'd advocate for both firing the current head coach and burning a year of eligibility off of the talent on the roster. Help me understand how this make sense?

Or are you just pissed off about a loss yesterday.....

Qb isn't the problem. Ask I'm saying is that at some point you need to prepare for next year. We can have an honest debate about that.

So we really are doing this - thread 5 about firing a coach after losing his first game of the year, by 3, in OT, on the road. Dear God you are sad.

I don't know if he was the right hire or not... time will tell on that. Yes he lost his first game of the year by three in OT, but you are leaving out some details - 10 point lead at half, 3 point lead with 1 minute to go, negative yardage in OT.

I forgot we blew a 10 point halftime lead.

Given ad situation I thought it was best option. Still willing give him time

+1 The program was in a different space when Claeys was hired. The "final" piece facilities wise is being built and we have a new A.D. I still think Claeys can turn this season around.

+2. I was in, and still am.

I would say this: if the Gophers go 7-5 in the regular season, and win a bowl game to finish 8-5, Claeys is back next year. That's a lock. I also think he returns even if Gophs go 6-6 in the Regular season, and win a bowl game to finish 7-6. It's tough to fire a coach who just won a bowl game. Of course, if Coyle decides he has to make a move, I suppose he could fire Claeys before the bowl game.

The other piece of the puzzle involves ticket sales. If the season-ticket holders keep dumping their seats, Coyle might feel he has to make a move to "energize" the fan base. (although I'm not sure there's enough juice in the electric grid to energize this fan base.....)

I will continue to stand behind TC. He will fix the defense and I really like the current offense. We lost a tough game, get over it and quit whining.

I just wasted 15 minutes of my life reading this useless, irrational thread. Newsflash: we are 3-1 and were underdogs in the loss over the weekend that somehow has left many in disarray.

Calm down and take a step back. If we beat Iowa this weekend there's a very real chance we enter the Nebraska game 7-2 or 6-3, potentially with the division title still in play. All our goals at the beginning of the season are still on the table.

Will we accomplish those goals? Who knows, but the amount of overreaction on this board to one loss at Penn State is mind boggling to me.
