Cal Fires Justin Wilcox

Three of the four major conference programs in CA have coaching vacancies. UCLA, Cal and Stanford.

Wilcox has been at Cal for nine seasons, with a conference record of 26-47.

Fleck has been at Minnesota for nine seasons, with a conference record 38-40.

So .. you know.
On top of that. Wilcox has never finished over .500 in conference play and best season was 8 wins in 2019. Outside of that season his best year was 7 wins in 2018 and every other season has finished under .500.

I've always been a fan of PJ... right now I am at the point where I would be ok if we went another direction. I still like him.... but he needs to change his best.
I’ve been pounding the table for Jon Sumrall for a couple years now. I think we’ve seen PJ’s ceiling.

I also think PJ has gotten comfortable and he knows exactly how good his teams need to be for him to not get fired.

Unfortunately, I don't think you're wrong.

He is smart enough to know if we beat Wisconsin we will leave excited and ready for next year.

You're right I'm sure PJ just wants to scrape by and do the absolute bare minimum. He's just like you on the forklift at Costco you guys are two peas in a pod.

I don't know what you guys expect out of our level of recruiting. We've been a consistent top 30-40 team with a top-50 to top-60 recruiting class, so what we do in the coming years with two recruiting classes in three years around #30 will form my opinion on his ability as a coach. He's finally been able to build a good recruiting base in Minnesota, so I'd like it if he stuck around at least until 2027 or 2028 to see those classes develop and then if he still can't reach a 10-win season with that talent I'll be in agreement with you guys. But for the time being, PJ has built an in-state recruiting base that wants to stay in Minnesota and has been able to seek out talented out-of-state recruits.

We'll have the most talent within the program at one time in the next few years than we've had in decades. Let's see what he can do with it.

This actually perfectly describes me.

Right now, I'm annoyed and probably pouting over Saturday's loss and I'm "sick of PJ". But if we beat Wisconsin, I'll be giving my wife and a kids a pep talk like "this is a family environment, and we define family as: Forget About Me, I Love You" as we're ordering appetizers at Chiles.

You haven't been posting here for long....not sure how long you have been around the board.....but you will quickly realize there are fans that post here that believe they are more invested in the success of the program than the players and coaches are.

Fleck has one of his best recruiting classes coming in next year. He needs at least 2-3 more years to see this out IMO (I've been flip flopping on this since last year). That doesn't mean the staff shouldn't be scrutinized.

I think the revolving door of coordinators the past few years led to Fleck placing loyalty above skillset in going with Collins...and it shows. Not sure if time and experience will improve that. Harbaugh seems to have improved but the sub-par portal replacements on the right side of the O-Line and injuries at running back have set the offense back.

Sounds like Sumrall is taking Auburn job.

Our recruiting has been better and I like that, but isn't that true for most of the B1G? Iowa has eight 4-stars in their 2026 class at the moment. I think, don't know, all the money the B1G has is raising all boats. It seems like the rest of the P4 has come down a little bit in comparison, including the SEC. They still recruit the best overall, but not by as much. So we may recruit better, but show similar results unless we play out of conference more. What do you think?

I too sit around and ponder the gophers from my ivory tower eating mostly acorns and root vegetables.

I'm going to say this to all the ppl who basically think fleck has run his course here: Kirk ferentz has only won 10+ games at Iowa 8 times in a million years of being their head coach. It's a slightly better rate than our track record with pj. They have bad seasons sprinkled in between like what we're experiencing this year. We will adjust. This is life. I honestly really hope PJ can be our ferentz. Some head scratching issues at times but a really long track record of competitiveness and overall success.

I'm certainly hoping to razz the Badgers faithful another year but razing them is a little extreme...:p
Fumble...

Note to self. Stop multi tasking. You suck at it!!!

Yep. If that was Fleck's record he most likely would have been fired by now.

My Penn State buddy in New Ulm texted me that he does not want Sumrall at State College...not sure why.

Being in the west division PJ had a much easier slate of conference opponents than JW, who had to go face high-caliber, often ranked teams like Washington, Oregon, USC, and Utah more regularly… while gophers had Purdue, at the time horrible Illinois teams, Northwestern, on an on, and occasional game vs OSU or Penn State. Look, neither are Nick Sabin, but PJ didn’t and hasn’t actually accomplished much more than Wilcox.

I don't think there's a huge gulf between the two, but there's a wide enough gulf to not be outraged at the injustice of it all or to really worry too much about it at all.

Record vs ranked teams last nine years:

Justin Wilcox 5-21 (.192%) (26 total games vs. ranked teams)

PJ Fleck 7-15 (.381%) (22 total games vs. ranked teams)

Record in bowl games last nine years:

Justin Wilcox 1-3 (.333%)

PJ Fleck 6-0 (100%)

Overall record last nine years:

Justin Wilcox 48-55 (.466%) (seven games under .500)

PJ Fleck 64-44 (.592%) (20 games over .500)

Lol yes he has. The PAC12 wasn’t the gauntlet you make it out to be, nor was the ACC.
