Bubblicious Sunday: Gophers Need To Hold Serve vs. Penn State

Early look at Tournament games:

Struggling Xavier plays Marquette in round 1 of the Big East Tournament, that's a game that easily could go Marquette's way and push Xavier out of the tournament.

Bubble team Providence plays St Johns in round 1 of the Big East Tournament and that won't be an easy game in MSG. If the Gophers are already ahead of Providence, more good news as the winner of this game plays a Villanova team that's looking to claim a number 1 seed.

Best news of all comes in the SEC, where IF Arkansas wins their first tournament game, they face Tennessee in the next round which almost assuredly means only one of these two teams is making the tournament. If Missouri is still in consideration, they will have to find a way to beat Florida in their second tournament game.

In the Atlantic 10, if Dayton wins their fist game, they get St Joseph's in the next round. St Joseph's just had a bad loss to LaSalle and Dayton is another team near the bubble. If one of the 6 projected Atlantic 10 tournament teams doesn't get it, it's likely the loser of this game.

In the Pac 12, a bad loss in the opening round by Stanford to Washington State might be enough to move them behind the Gophers (long shot)

I think more potential good than bad can happen for the Gophers during the remaining conference tournaments provided Minnesota can find a way to beat Penn State a third time.

agreed. the way it shakes out, many of the bubblers have to play each other and essentially knock each other out. If we can take care of business vs. PSU, it'll be interesting to see the way the other games play out.

Thanks for this. I really hope that Xavier and Dayton lose right away in their conference tournaments, because that would be huge for us! Lets hope the loser of a potential Dayton/St Joseph's matchup doesn't make the tournament.

We will need to do what Nebraska did tonight. Beat Wisconsin....after we beat PSU.

Good summary. After last week, some of these have to go our way, right? Looking at you, Marquette.

The positive of it all - I think we will beat PSU. If I had to bet straight up against Wisconsin, I'd say they in, but I think we can beat them in the BTT. Heck, I think we can beat just about anybody in a one and done scenario. The negative - I think we can lose to any BIG team... but PSU scares me the least.

Agreed. On a neutral court, I think we can beat them. We beat them pretty handily at home and played tough with them on the road. Plus, the Gophers always seem to show up in the Big Ten Tournament.

Gophers got a good draw in the tournament. They can't face three of the four teams that score me the most, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, unless they reach the final. Michigan State would be in the semis. If they get that far, they are in the NCAA, most likely.

Great summary.

Who does Pitt play in the ACC? I don't care what Lunardi says, if they get upset in the opener they've got to be in danger of missing the tourney.

Also, the A10 is a nice "non-BCS" league, but to talk about them getting six bids, same as B1G (if MN is left out), is preposterous in my opinion.

They are the #5 seed. Get winner of #12 ND vs #13 WF

You must have missed last year's debacle against Illinois. I've been to a majority of Big Ten Tournaments, and I would say the success versus expectation/seed is mixed at best. They have had some nice showings, but have layed a number of eggs too. In my subjective memory, I would say Ohio State is probably the most successful tournament team since the thing started. Rarely get upset and play to seed or better most of the time.

This is Pitino's time. One of the indicators of success to me is playing better at the end than the beginning, and the jury is still out on that one. The tournament can seal the deal on that criterion.
