Brosmer in Vikings Game

I would think that he will be on the active roster as well.

There are a number of other teams that have this same situation. Ewers in Miami, Leonard in Indy to name a couple. Rookies who have impressed but who are probably QB3. The decision is a tough one as it would be ideal to not use a roster spot on someone that is very unlikely to see the field this season, especially when that extra lineman is so valuable to a team during a game.

The thing that makes Brosmer's situation so different than most of the other teams with this decision is that he a backup to a guy who the young future of your team. For example, Miami can easily think that Ewers should be developed to be their future starter over an extremely injury prone Tua or Leonard over Daniel Jones who has failed in the past. Whereas the Vikings could question, what are they developing Brosmer for? To be traded to another team? To put pressure on McCarthy? But things change, injuries happen, so who knows.
The Vikings would keep Brosmer to be QB2 next year and then 3rd year, assuming JJ looks to be the starter going forward, they would have a trade asset. If Brosmer keeps doing what he's doing and improves he's going to get someone's attention that really needs a QB over the next two seasons.

Now I think JJ is going to be good but you can't know 100% until you see him do it. Brosmer could prove to be a great plan B next year is something go sideways with JJ. If no then he could get them something valuable back in trade.

I'm not saying this will happen or anything, but I'm assuming someone on a practice squad can decline signing with someone else if they want? Hypothetically it could be reasonable that he temporarily goes to the practice squad knowing it likely won't be all season. KOC's reputation is so good with QBs I think that it's actually plausible a QB turns down a roster spot elsewhere for a short time on the practice squad to remain with these coaches and this system.

Again, don't think it will actually happen here as he's been too good.

Yes, it could happen that if Brosmer was cut that he may be offered a spot elsewhere and decline it. It would make sense if he didn't feel like the team was a good fit. It would be better to stay in MN on the practice squad than go be QB3 on most other teams. But it's easier for us to say as there is more money for making the roster than being on the practice squad. And your path to QB2 and playing is easier than going from the practice squad. But it is possible if he likes the situation here enough he would decline an offer elsewhere. Rypien may be in the same boat.

Always good to be developing backup options. Look at Cassel and Jimmy G in New England backing up Brady. Patriots got good trade value out of them.

Exactly, just look at what they have been doing lately. Jones, comp pick. Darnold started a whole season and played very well, them moved on and we'll get a comp pick. Daniel Jones moved on and now we will get a comp pick for him too. Given how valuable QBs are you should always have three with one of them being a guy like Brosmer who is a UDFA but promising and bring in cast offs you think got a raw deal. Most of the time none of these QBs will cost you much so worse case you're not out much.

There was a Packers WR awhile ago (10-ish years maybe?) who declined an offer from the Vikings in order to remain on Packers practice squad. It was during the Rogers era and later in the season when GB was contending and the Vikings were not a contender. So unless the rules have changed, there was an instance where it happened.

There may be different rules for rookies vs a vet. I know vets can refuse, not sure if rookies can.

I could maybe see a vet doing it as they are paid the rate at which they signed for, like Wentz. But I highly doubt Brosmer would turn down a huge pay increase and a chance to be on an active roster to stay with the Vikings.

Yup, that's what I was saying earlier in the thread. There is a substantial pay increase by making the roster. Plus it goes towards years of service, where I don't think practice squad does. I think you have to be on 3 game day rosters to count a year of service. So pretty good chance that no matter what happens at this point if he gets on a roster he will be there for a few games minimum and get a year of service towards vesting. Vesting then would affect his minimum salary going forward. If he is on the practice squad and isn't on any game day rosters the first season he would have zero vested years going into next year. So practice squad would put him a year behind that way.

Do the Vikings have an international player? I see you get an extra practice squad spot if your player is international.
