Brosmer has been a lock since he was signed with the Vikes. He just needed to prove he was who they thought he could be in the Viking's system.

There is no need for the Vikes to hang onto two journeyman QB's as backups. When you have the HC talking about how Brosmer has rare talents, how he has quickly picked up the very complex offense, how he has a very quick release, how he doesn't get the team in trouble, how he and JJ Mac are the first ones in the morning and the last to leave every night, how he and JJ Mac are constantly asking questions and have a good relationship together, etc....

They simply do not play alike at all, but if Brosmer was in the NFL as long I'm sure he'd be happy with it. Only similarities really are there were UDFA and don't have an Elway level arm? I mean there are a ton examples of those guys that have bounced around the NFL.

It would be surprising if they didn't hang onto Howell too. He has plenty of talent and is the same age as Brosmer, at least for a few more weeks.

I think the competition is between Rypien and Howell, they're not keeping two vet backups. Neither has been overly impressive so wouldn't be surprised no matter which they keep.

I think Rypien is gone and that's an easy decision. The only discussion is if they carry 3 QBs on the 53 man roster.

He did look better at Florida than Wisconsin, but that would be hard NOT to do.

Mertz is that guy that forever people seem to see promise and ... really there's not a lot to show that other than maybe one season and a lot of seasons NOT showing that. But people don't stop believing.

I don't know how those guys do it, wish I had a career like that.

I don't think the poster was saying they play alike. Posted Both undrafted, roughly the same height, neither with a rocket arm or dazzling speed. My take is that it is a good comparison in the sense that Brosmer has skills and knowledge that bode well for an extended career like Keenum has had.

I think Max is more athletic than Keenum and has a better arm but that's just going from memory and the glow of Max's recent performances.

Re: Joe Namath had a 90% awful career, but he won a SB for a NY team and is in the HOF.

IDK..Max couldn’t outrun big fellas and he had balls batted at the line by the same big fellas. I hope he makes the Vikes and has a great career in the NFL. If the pass play ain’t there within the 3 steps it is adios muchacho.

Those traits along with the ability to come off the bench and stay calm, lead the offense, and have the anticipation to make the necessary throws is what you need in a backup who is effectively a second set of eyes from the sideline, especially if you've got your franchise guy locked down or think you do.

Bold: ... this is unfortunately what I was getting at with my post a bit back.

Why did it take our (offensive) coaching staff until the Michigan game to let him have more reign of the offense? He (Brosmer) is going to make an NFL roster at QB, the most important position in the game.

Seems like you'd do that from game one?

The staff was probably suffering from a combination of PTSD from Kaliakmanis and a lasting hope that they'd be able to keep running Tresselball as they always did. They had to change out of necessity and instead of finding that the offense performed much of the same or worse, it may have helped then evolve the offense into something better. We'll see if they let it grow or pull back a bit with a freshman playcaller.

This opinion is more the consensus of football people.

It’s possible the GH guys are right on this and I hope they are right and he is already ahead of pretty much every drafted QB, but the GH group is definitely not the place you go for in depth football knowledge, especially on the pro level.

Given what they did with Brosmer, I'm worried we'll see the offensive playcalling/"attitude" start out even more restrictive.

Brosmer is a faster learner as we're seeing in Vikings camp but he only had a spring ball and fall camp last year to learn the offense. PJ notes it is complex with the reads and checks.

Drake has had spring ball, fall camp, and entire season, another spring and another fall camp.

Obviously PJ would also like to run and will but I don't think Drake will have much for limitations.
 



Well, in case we didn't think it was a lock already, seems very likely now that Max is QB3 on the roster.

Who are the football people (besides Spaulding, of course)?
Now that it appears Brosmer might be on the final 53, have they changed their consensus?

I think he may be ahead of most of the rookie QBs in terms of understanding the offense and making the right throw. So if you were starting 1 rookie QB this year, Brosmer may actually start the season better than all of them.

Cam Ward has had a good preseason too though and has a higher upside. Dart has looked pretty good but I think he seems like the type that is a can crusher. He's going to look good vs back of the roster guys but I think i the regular season he's going to really struggle when people start scheming and he has to make better and faster reads. Gabriel has been solid too and more snaps vs #1 defense.

Brosmer has been clearly better than:

Slough
Ewers
Milroe

So while I'm not sure I would say Brosmer is the #1 rookie QB so far I think considering he is factually better than all but maybe three of the drafted QBs that's impressive.

I was referring to outside of GH.

And no I would say they haven’t changed. The talking of heads have said that he has looked good and had a real chance to make the roster or try to get snuck through to the practice squad. That appears to be about right.

I will bet a lot of money they don't try to sneak him on practice squad. He'd be claimed in an instant. I think KOC knows he might, (might) have something special and he isn't going to risk losing him. They go with 3 QB's on 53 or maybe put Wentz on practice squad and suit him up on game days. Think the former, though.

I would think that he will be on the active roster as well.

There are a number of other teams that have this same situation. Ewers in Miami, Leonard in Indy to name a couple. Rookies who have impressed but who are probably QB3. The decision is a tough one as it would be ideal to not use a roster spot on someone that is very unlikely to see the field this season, especially when that extra lineman is so valuable to a team during a game.

The thing that makes Brosmer's situation so different than most of the other teams with this decision is that he a backup to a guy who the young future of your team. For example, Miami can easily think that Ewers should be developed to be their future starter over an extremely injury prone Tua or Leonard over Daniel Jones who has failed in the past. Whereas the Vikings could question, what are they developing Brosmer for? To be traded to another team? To put pressure on McCarthy? But things change, injuries happen, so who knows.
