Brian Smith Commits to U as PWO, Class of 2013

His tape is focused much more on his receiver skills, but it's also much more difficult to put together a highlight tape as a defensive back. He doesn't look like a burner (rivals lists him as 4.68 40, which might actually be realistic this time...even playing against Wisconsin talent he doesn't look fast at all). He's got a big body, so I'm curious about what exactly they are looking at him for.

He appears to have good hands, but you wouldn't put dropped catches on your recruiting tape. We could use a few taller guys at receiver, but given our needs at secondary or linebacker you'd think that would be more likely. He'd make a good h-back prospect, but you'd think we were set there for a while.

Pretty sure Cockran was about the same size.
Depends. Rivals has him listed at 215, but he has himself listed at 200; that also doesn't mean they have the same body types/potential for growth.

Also, Cockran really shouldn't have been playing this year, but did so out of necessity. And, when he did play, it was often standing up more as a pass-rushing linebacker. He was a liability in the run game with his hand in the ground. If you kept track, he lost a lot of playing time to Alex Keith towards the end of the season once Keith started coming into this own.

Is this for a PWO? Or a scholarship? I would think he'll be a WR. Welcome aboard!

PWO, my guess is he will be on defense. He was an All-State DB this past year.

He's got Wale on his highlight video, he's already won me over.

That's really impressive to beat Wisconsin for one of their own. Even if it's just a PWO, I don't remember the last time that happened.

I'd consider Wisconsin in-state recruiting for Coach Kill at this point. Great to hear that Brian wants to be a Gopher!

This is the first guy from Wisconsin we've gotten that they had an equal offer out for. At least that I can think of. All of scholarship commits have been guys without Wisconsin offers.

Yeaaa it was a joke..

Looks a lot better as Safety to me than as a WR. I'm glad we got him, kind surprised he didn't receive more attention.

I think (I could be wrong) that Botticelli had a PWO from Wisconsin as well.

That is correct. He was angry at the way Wisconsin handled his recruiting and expressed that by walking on at Minnesota.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't following recruiting as closely at the time. Well if Botticelli is any indication, this is a nice pickup.

I spose listed position isn't a lock for what they will play, but it is interesting that the committed scholarships are heavily defensive (9 def - 5 off - 1 spc) and the PWO's are exclusively offensive. But then, the roster for next year looks to be something like 52 off to 38 def.

Anyway, looks like another excellent get.

?

Right now I have 42 off to 37 def. with 3 special teams. 52-38 isn't possible since there are only 85 scholarships.

I don't have a very good idea who exactly is on schollie, so I was guesstimating the overall roster (while also removing the guys reported to be leaving early to graduate. Seems right since we're talking about schollies and PWO's

I would be pretty surprised if Smith isn't coming in as a DB

Right on, he seems like a perfect WO candidate.

He has the body type where he could end up at a number of different positions. Like others have pointed out, he isn't much different in size to Cockran as a FR (would probably need a couple years to be ready), and he could easily end up at WR, S or TE.

As far as WO's from WI...
We also got Ben Holcomb from WI last year. I'm sure Holcomb had a PWO from WI, he had a couple FCS scholarships (North Dakota, Northern Iowa, etc.).

I searched for this but didn't find anything so I'll post the question here but has anybody heard anything about Smith today? His twitter profile says he is still coming here but gophersports.com doesn't have anything on him and they do have things for the other PWOs

I love his blocking...just furocious. He injured a couple of guys. I see him as a TE or a LB.
