Bowl Projections 11/11

So who would be the better team if Neb loses to OSU in that scenario, Mich State or Neb? Both would have 2 "good" losses. I suppose the nod goes to Mich State with the head to head win.

MSU based on head to head and because Nebraska would lose while MSU was on a bye in the final week of the season.

Then they'd have to beat OSU too in the championship which would likely begin one of those fun scenarios where Michigan State jumps into a major 6 bowl over OSU because OSU lost in the last week even though OSU stomped on MSU. Then we'd have Nebraska and MSU representing us, and OSU would fall all the way from possible playoff spot to the Capital One Bowl in a split second.

Can't see Sparty jumping OSU in that scenario, however here are the more likely New Year's 6 scenarios:

(1) If OSU & Sparty win their last 3 regular-season games, the only way the West champ is part of the New Years' 6 is by winning the BT title game. Can't see a runner-up 2-loss Nebraska, or 3-loss Gophers/Wisconsin getting a New Year's 6 spot ahead of a 10-2 MSU.

(2) OSU wins out but loses BT championship to Iowa/Gophers/Nebraska/Wisconsin + Sparty wins out = BT champ (West) and perhaps OSU go to New Year's 6. In that scenario Sparty would be #3 and left out & would go to Citrus/Outback either way.

Unless tOSU is practicing in snowhoes, they pickup that second loss this Saturday. You lose a lot of lateral quickness in snowshoes!

I heard that Tosu is practicing half of their time in ice skates as well. Hope that they have considered the obvious variable...........the knife wielding polar bear.

Athlon has us in the San Fran Bowl:

San Francisco
Dec. 30
Big Ten vs.
Pac-12
Minnesota vs. Arizona

I'd love that matchup and would drive/fly the family down from Seattle for it.

CNN/SI has the Gophers in the Holiday Bowl vs. Arizona. That's always been a solid bowl.

My understanding is they had Holiday Bowl representatives at the Iowa Game. I believe there was another bowl game too that sent their "people".

Anyone know who that was?

Worst case scenario for the Big Ten?

If one of it's New Year's 6 representatives gets matched up vs. Marshall. Would get zero credit for beating the Thundering Herd -- which unfortunately would be a fair argument -- and if they lose, oh boy, would the Big Ten and that particular team get ridiculed to no end.

Fiesta Bowl.

If Minnesota (or Iowa) ended up getting to the B1G title game and won, the Fiesta could be a landing spot - ideally against the Pac-12 to set up a pseudo Rose Bowl.

Please dear God, not Tennessee in Tennessee. I was there when we played them in Memphis in 1986 and it scarred me for life. Rudest fans in the world.

They have Rutgers going to an at-large game, while the Big Ten-affiliated Heart of Dallas Bowl goes unfilled. Tells you all you need to know about the amount of research put into their projections.

ESPN Bowl Projections:

Chick-fil-A Peach/Cotton/VIZIO Fiesta: Ohio State
Citrus: Michigan State
Outback: Wisconsin
National University Holiday: Nebraska
TaxSlayer/Franklin American Mortgage Music City: Minnesota
San Francisco: Maryland
New Era Pinstripe: Iowa
Quick Lane: Penn State
At-large: Rutgers

Go Gophers!!

I still think that either Michigan or Illinois may win 6 games. All Michigan has to do is beat Maryland at home. All Illinois has to do is win two of their last three (Iowa and Penn State at home and Northwestern on the road).

Nashville is an enjoyable city, but it can be fairly cold and either snowy or slushy there at the end of December; not the greatest place to be sitting outside watching a football game The weather actually could be an advantage for us if we played a Southern team.

Three weeks to go and 24 more bowl eligible teams needed.

The Mighty 1090 out of San Diego has their weekly Holiday Bowl update tonight.
You can listen online to it (Google Mighty 1090 for link). I'm guessing they will have update on trip to TCF last Saturday.

I'm listening, and the guest who is from the game's sponsor (National University) as well as the two hosts all said they are hoping for USC vs. Minnesota, FWIW.

Correct and feel free to correct anything I've added below.

Dr. Michael Cunningham from National University also mentioned the philanthropic efforts of Denny Stanford to the University for the Sanford Education Center. As Jike said, "We would love a USC vs Minnesota matchup!"

Other items which were mentioned

-Ted Tollner (former USC / San Diego State coach) is co-chair and agreed with the hosts that, more than likely, the PAC-12 South will be representing in Holiday Bowl. Talked more about B1G West and said, "This weekend's game is going to be MN's season" or something to that nature. He stated, "We can't go wrong - with Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Minnesota." Then, I cringed when he fit this delayed response........"and Iowa too!"

-Game is Saturday, December 27th at 5:00 pm. Hosts of the show were excited about that because it is an 8:00 Eastern kickoff which meant great opportunity for National Exposure (for the Bowl). Sounded as though having a B1G tie-in was a welcome change (been 20 years since B1G team has been there).

-Spoke about Poinsettia Bowl match up candidates with 5-5 Navy having to play a tough 8-2 Georgia Southern team this week and San Diego State vs Boise St.

-Spoke about (from a coaching standpoint) the blunder the kid from Utah made vs Oregon and had insight into that situation along with TD celebrations and dealing with athletes.

I found Tollner to be very positive and informative in his coaching and following these teams.

Lastly, they were going to Playoff Selection Committee Chair, Jeff Long, for questions. I tuned out when they previewed that prior to going to commercial.

I'll try and tune in next week and give a synopsis of what I heard.

Good recap.

At the end, they talked about our game this weekend and one of the guys said it was more likely the Gophers would lose their final three games. His co-host chimed in and said he thought the Gophers would win at least one more, then they mentioned the Holiday Bowl rep who was at the Iowa game was raving about Minnesota and how enthusiasm for Gopher football is really high.

I got the impression they want Minnesota to win a game or two and be in the mix.

I would absolutely love a matchup against USC. We've got some recent history......and I think that we could beat them.
