Since he arrived in Dinkytown, new Golden Gopher head coach Jerry Kill has worked tirelessly to put his staff together, finish the 2011 recruiting class and lay the groundwork for the 2012 recruiting class which is already producing results with some important in-state commitments. In his “free time” Kill has met with numerous high school coaches, season ticket holders, groups of former Gopher football players and won over a tough media town.

How do you spell "cautiously optimistic"?

Coach Kill has a huge hill to climb but he has been there and done it before.

I agree with your sentiments there guys. We have seen and heard all this same stuff before whenever we get a new coach. Still, it's kind of nice when a ray of hope comes along and maybe, just maybe, things are going to get better.

Coach Kill kind of reminds me of guys like Joe Tiller or Barry Alvarez - guys that aren't the sexy pick and you might take a little lightly at first, but the next thing you know, he is turning things around and his team is winning a lot of football games. I am not sure if Coach Kill will be as successful as either Tiller or Alvarez were but I think we finally have ourselves a guy who knows what it takes to win at Minnesota. I am very interested and excited in seeing how this team performs next year and beyond, but hearing the irrational exuberance makes me a little nervous because we have a long ways to go before we are considered a great football team.

Twenty-three and sixteen; Fifty-five and thirty-two; Eleven and eleven; and Thirty-eight and fourteen OR One hundred twenty-seven and seventy-three.

'Kids play their butts off and don't make mistakes or they sit down -- right now.'

This is a reason why I'm excited. It is how things work at all the great programs. I always had he sense that Brewster was determined not to take one step backward in order to take two steps forward, and so he left guys in the game repeating mistakes. I get the sense with Kill that he'll pun the waterboy in it he can tackle better than Brandon Beal.

I am optimistic, but being Scandinavian I was simply born cautious. The puzzler to me is that one reads Stein's comments and then reads the comments from one poster in the Thomas Hammock departure thread about Kill being a "B squad" coach or O'Brien being a "B squad" operations director and it is hard to reconcile those angles.

At the very least, I think we are going to see a more organized, energized, and straightforward approach to football at the U of M. Win or lose, I am confident that the effort level top-to-bottom will be there in a way that has been sadly lacking over the past two decades.

Kill is "pedal to the metal." All he has to do is steer clear of cliffs.

I agree that the Kill hire has the potential for a Tiller or Alveraz type hire. I don't like the Mase analogies, because Mase was fired for a reason. I want a coach who can get us past the Mason level. I think coach Kill could be the guy to do that we just need to give him a chance. I think even by Kill's third year we could be very competitive in the Big Ten.

Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention, but this is the first I've heard anything about O'Brien. What's the problem with him? What's he doing wrong?

It was a comment from a troll from a team to the east or south in the Hammock thread. Nothing to worry about

I have no idea. As the above poster said, probably the old REO "heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another you've been messing around." In other words, "post office for adults" from someone who got a garbled message.

I can see it now. It won't be long before Stein starts taking credit for Maturi hiring Kill. What a piece of sh*t Stein is.

He probably still thinks Felton Spencer would have been the first player taken in his draft if it were to be held again.

You don't know Bob Stein at all. Whether you like his time with the Wolves or not he is a stand up guy that tells it like it is. There are no games with him. I played with him for 3 yrs and have kept in touch with him, and he is a true GOPHER !!!

I totally agree...I've known Bob since 1967 and he is a tried and true Gopher. This just proves to me that a lot of the guys on this board don't know what they're talking about.

No true Gopher supporter would publicly throw their school's AD under the bus the way he did right in the middle of a coaching search. Stein is a jerk. End of story.

Don't forget that Stein was also one of the leaders of Save Gopher Football, the group at tried to destroy our coaching search because they thought they should get to make the hire.

Just a case of calling it like it is!

You are so correct. Anyone who watched the current ad in action since he arrived on the scene and watched the downward spiral from the heights of a 10-3 season under Mason in 2003 as maturi's actions with coaches caused the fall to the depths of the 2007 1-11, 0-8 Big Ten season and the final assult on Gopher Football during the final days of the the brewball era of the the 2010 season and did NOT call a spade a spade when discussing the job the ad did is ONLY a macturian apologist who cares NOTHING about Golden Gopher Football lore and doesn't have a clue about the history and tradition of this program. That would be you go4broke(n).

It was a pleasure watching Bob Stein and his teammates play football at the University of Minnesota. It is NOT too impressive seeing a go4broke(n) comment trashing a two-time Golden Gopher All-American Football Player.

We are ALL very fortunate that Bob Stein cares so much about Golden Gopher Football.

Soon, badger joel maturi will be referred to in the past tense and he can retire to his beloved madison, wisky environment. He will be gone. Finally! Even prexy b can't keep him around much longer as the door hits prexy b's back side on his way out in June of this year. That will be a very good thing.

Who cares if Stein is a jerk or the greatest thing since the wheel? The point is he has endorsed Coach Kill and his methods. Who hasn't to date?

My hope is that President Elect Kaler tells Bruininks to keep Maturi in tow in his current status and not do anything stupid, like extending his contact, until he has time to evaluate him and then make a decision. From what I have read, Kaler understands the impact that a football program can have on the University. There is a lot of evidence that impact has yet to be realized and not in just W's and L's but in many other areas as well.

Like making more money for the school and giving it back to a certain department in need of money. NU did this a couple of years ago.

I don't care at all if Stein is a jerk or not. I wouldn't have posted a word if GopherHole had not given him the forum to spout off about what a great supporter of Gopher football is. He most definitely is not. No matter how many times he and his pals come in GopherHole to try to convince us otherwise it is not going to work. Stein has already proved otherwise.

Stein did a pathetic job running the Wolves and he is doing an even worse at being a Gopher fan and supporter. He needs to go back to his anonymous ways. No sports fan in Minnesota has missed him since he has been out of the news. And we all would have been better off if he would have kept it that way.

Wren’s Patron Saint

Get a Life! Nobody cares about Glen Mason. If you haven't noticed, we now have a real football coach. If you want to worship Saint Glen, go light a candle, but if I never see his name here again that will be too soon.

Breaking news!! Bob Stein reneged and said Kill was the worst hire possible and he is pulling the plug on Gopher football!

Does that make you feel better? Get over yourself.

Bob Stein's influence on Gopher football is miniscule. He supports Coach Kill and that is all that matters.

Bob Stein's influence on Gopher football is miniscule. But he, like any concerned Gopher football fan, has grounds to grumble. But, like I said, who cares? Ooops. I guess you and one or two others with nothing else to worry about.

He supports Coach Kill and that is all that matters.

they didn't try to destroy our search, they tried to SAVE it. Maturi NEVER should have been allowed to make the hire and I totally agree with what that group was trying to accomplish. That being said, i think there were a rogue member or two that took it too far in contacting schools about our AD and the whole process. That was definitely over the top and I know for a fact the guys like Bob Stein had nothing to do with that. You need to get your facts straight. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a jerk. You watch how badly Maturi is going to screw up the Women's BB Coaching situation, possibly Men's Hockey, and the law suit going on in the Women's Golf department and do the math on how much this guy is costing the U of M. It's unbelievable that he still has a job. And then he sends out a mass email to all season tickets holders saying how great he is because he has balanced the budget. Whoopee! Show me how many championship banners we've hung in the last ten years in our major sports?????????????????? I guess it doesn't matter, because we've balanced the budget.

Regardless about how you feel about Joel Maturi he was the guy President Bruininks put in charge of the football coaching search. Stein and the other so-called Gopher fans (including a prominent poster in GopherHole) who publicly criticised and undermined Maturi during the seach are complete dirtbags. We all know who they are and we are never going to let people forget what they did.

Joel Maturi has too much class to do this himself. Me and others like me don't have any class at all. Therefore, we are going to carry this grudge for a very long time. Bob Stein and his gang are never going to have a friendly audience in GopherHole or anywhere else they decide to run their mouth off about Gopher sports. We have had enough of the daily public lynching of Joel Maturi in the local media and on internet message boards.

Did they really think the handling of the coaching search was going to change midstream? The end result was Maturi still did the hire and all savegopherfootball.com did was to make the University look bad. Taking an ad out in the Mn Daily during the process, can you really condone that?

Their whole fiasco was a total lack of class.

Their intentions may have been good, but their actions were pathetic at best.

I guess it doesn't matter, because we've balanced the budget.

You are correct. The regents and the president do not really care about the fb team or any other Minnesota team. Like it or not the U of M is a place where students get an education and they happen to be in the football business. The current regents and president don't get it. They are a huge problem with the business part of Minnesota athletics. When regents and the president are interviewed by the Minnesota legislature nobody ever talks about athletics during the interview. Why? Because they don't care.

I thought the regents specifically brought up athletics in their interviews with the incoming president and it was his support for athletics that played a part in hiring him.
