Bill Belichick to become the UNC football head coach

You’d turn down Saban? Ok.

He was a 4th and 2 Blake Corum completion away from another title so he went out almost on top. Pretty good timing. Most guys stick around too long, become the villain, get fired..

Where did I say that?

I think turning down an opportunity you're interested out of concern about your "legacy" is an ego trip.

The guy is going to get paid a ton of money to coach football and it's a new test. I'm surprised it happened but we'll see. In reading his "organization bible" that he wants part of the contract, it sounds interesting.

From Newsweek, "Belichick's bible, which he has shared with other college and pro teams but customized specifically for the UNC position, contains "structure, payment plans, staffing choices and salary minimums position by positions" that "would require historic levels of investment from the school."
To appease Belichick, the school would also have to commit to hiring a coaching staff run by Belichick and a recruitment staff run by a sitting college GM who would need to be bought out of his current contract."
So basically he wants to run things like an NFL franchise in college. Will be interesting to see if UNC is desperate enough to try it.

The part Belichick is missing is that college players and NFL players are very different. He is used to working with professional athletes who can afford to eat, sleep, breathe football because it is their livelihood. In the NFL you are also dealing with adults as opposed to teenagers.

Guess we will see what happens if this does all go down but in my opinion it will be a disaster as the 70+ year old Belichick is not going to want to deal with this generation of players and this crazy college football landscape.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like.

Yeah, we'll see. With the amount of money it will take UNC to pay Bill and build this out you could likely pay to get big name coach. This is either revolutionary (every school will do this) or it's going to fail miserably.

As to the differences between college and the NFL, I think those are dissolving at this point. If this was college football in 2015, I'd agree with your take 100%. Now? I don't know because I just can't wrap my head around what will work and what won't work in this climate.

He can sell the same stuff Deion is selling. Great coach who will hire good assistants and probably only have to be the closer on recruiting battles.

I think the real reason Belichick is interested is the possibility of dating college girls. His current girlfriend is 24 (he's 72) and maybe he thinks she's getting too old.
He’s adopted the Leo DiCaprio “nobody over 25” rule of dating.

I don't think this is gonna work, yes his name will bring a lot, but the way he treats NFL players, and his personality is that of a Rock... his awkward press conferences. And NC? I just don't think this is gonna work.

Belicheat won't want players wasting time on attending classes or otherwise participating in normal college activities.

I think when I drive on the interstate now, and see those big chunks of truck tires on the side of the road - I'm going to think of North Carolina football coach hiring philosophies.

Will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out. My prediction is that it's a disaster but maybe Belichick can connect with the youngsters. At least his girlfriend can help him figure out what the kids are talking about since she is right around their age.

I have a feeling he will be the CEO and his kid the DC. Bring in a highly qualified OC. I can see it working as a NFL factory, but I can also see it blowing up.

It will be fascinating to watch. I feel like college players of today wouldn't have fit well with how the Patriots used to run things. Some interesting experiments in college football with Sanders at Colorado, now Belichick at UNC and even Cignetti at Indiana.

By no means is this guaranteed to succeed, but I'm surprised how many are quick to assume this will be a disaster, or that kids won't want to play for BB. I think there is a certain type of kid that will be drawn to Bill's disciplinary type of environment. Much like PJ is not for everyone, BB won't be for everyone, but I wouldn't be surprised if he can get enough kids to buy in and succeed. And as much as I love PJ, he doesn't have the rings to stand behind like Bill does.

Either way I'm extremely intrigued.

there is a lengthy article in The Athletic about behind-the-scenes issues at North Carolina. apparently the AD and the leader of the Board of Regents have been engaged in a pretty nasty feud for a while. there are also allegations that the Board has taken an active role in trying to recruit Belichick.

In May, North Carolina’s Board of Trustees — the 13-person group that serves as the school’s top governing body — approved an audit of the university’s athletic department. At the time, Board of Trustees chair John Preyer publicly scolded athletic director Bubba Cunningham over “the level of bad data that has been provided” to the committee regarding UNC athletics’ financials..........

(After Mack Brown was fired) Preyer publicly criticized the administration’s handling of Brown’s exit days later.

Preyer and at least one other member of UNC’s board (allegedly) presented Belichick with a preliminary offer to make him the Tar Heels’ next coach. Any board member going over top university officials’ heads to do so would violate the university’s bylaws, which would be grounds for dismissal from the board. A senior school official briefed on the search lamented Preyer and other outside voices’ meddling and said the process likely would have been completed by now if not for their involvement.

Interesting that the Gophers missed out on games against Coach Prime & Coach Hoodie by 1 season.

Holy shit.

BB is bringing former NFL GM Michael Lombardi with him to UNC, who will act as the GM of football operations at UNC.

Lombardi is a staple of the sports gambling channel, VSiN, with a show called The Lombardi Line, as well as his podcast of a number of years now, "The GM Shuffle".

I'm admittedly a huge Lombardi fan, that's a huge hit to VSiN for sure, and it will suck to lose "The GM Shuffle" twice a week.

Those are a couple of great football minds at work there, and they have infinite trust in each other and share a lot of the same perspectives.

Guys want to play in the NFL; I'm not nearly as skeptical as some are that this will fail. I would not bet against it myself, but that's just me

I wouldn't bet against it either. In today's College Football climate who really knows what will work or fail?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Even if it bombs after a season or two, not too hard to change course rather easily, work the portal & NIL and be right back to where NC is currently or better.

This seems crazy, pretty sure no NFL team wanted him, or wants him. Why would NC take a chance. Maybe it’ll work, but I can’t see him dealing with 19 year olds and their parents and boosters, just seems like a match made to fail.

I can see him dealing with 19 year old ... girlfriends ...

according to The Athletic, it comes down to this: Belichick wanted to coach, and he didn't think he was going to get another NFL job, so he decided to try college coaching. apparently a lot of NFL teams just don't want to deal with Bill, because he wants total control, and NFL teams have gone away from that model.

I think the possibility to set up his kid as a HC in waiting is also attractive.

Dan Patrick speculated that after one year he will go back to the NFL and hand UNC to his kid. That assumes it goes well. But their schedule is a joke next year. They play Clemson, but no Miami, VT, Florida State or SMU. He can probably do no worse than 8-4.

I think this is a home run hire.

He'll get top coaching help and recruit well.

I work in sales and just thought the fact he is so old at 72 to just be starting as a college coach AND has a 24-year old girlfriend could be a huge turnoff to a lot of mom's that have a heavy influence on their sons. It even turns off a lot of us guys on this site.

These guys are very important mentors in many ways to these kids. Just look at the way recent Gopher transfer, Zach Pyron's, parents gushed about our coaches, "our son and his future wife will leave the university of Minnesota better people regardless of what happens on the field."

On the other hand, I've never recruited football players so what do I know and, if he has UNC's NIL cranking and has a bunch of NFL heavyweights joining him, that will certainly be big. Money talks! Much like PJ, I think he's so unique that some will love him and some will hate him. That's actually a great sales strategy when there is a lot of competition. Being meh just means you're value prop is unique to no one. If some kids and parents just absolutely love what you are all about and you're very unique. Bang! UNC is taking another home run swing so I can't blame them for that. It will be absolutely fascinating to watch!

$10 M he owes if he leaves before June 1st
$1M if he stays past June 1st

NFL clause I guess
