Best time to send Ben packing?

I think the coaching search is already underway. Just not public but the whispers through the network have to be blowing already. That makes the public process a lot shorter whether it comes in December, February or March.
Would like to see Coyle at every men's BB game as well as the administrators who pressured Coyle to hire CBJ. Let them suffer like the season ticket holders who pay for the tickets and who attend the games. Maybe the administration would insist on hiring a successful coach and doing whatever it takes to put a .500 (B10 season) + winning team on the floor if they sat thru the last 20 years of gopher bb games.

If we get the doors blown off in the first 4-5 Big 10 games, we make a move.

If we struggle, but it's a close game here and there, I think he gets the entire year or the vast majority of it.

If we make the tournament or are legitimately on the bubble, he's back.

I think he probably gets the year.

Agreed, I think he gets the year too. In large part because they'll have a decent defensive team that will keep some games close and allow them to win a few. Just not enough guys who can score..

My glass-half-empty brain says they won't win a single conference game.

The present doesn't extend hope, but each game must still be played and perhaps there is hope for a miracle moment. (Who will be our Joey King?)

In the North Texas and Yale games, our offense was so bad I'm wondering why Caleb Williams didn't get some minutes. Could it get any worse? Williams has proven he can score. Give him some playing time

Ben Johnson is so bad that he probably isn't aware that Caleb Williams is on his bench.

To many folks think this still the old way of doing things. Free agency has changed everything. So the sooner the better! U need to get a coach hired asap so they can recruit the Free agents!

Coyle appears to have righted on of his wrongs with the hire of Coach P for women’s team. He needs to do the same for the men following the season.
Are these posts serious? Or are we just having fun in here lol?

And all the other posts about coaching are at least mostly in jest, right?

Tubby Smith and the gophers were in the NCAA tourney 3 years ('09, '10, '13) and in 2013 won a game in the first round. Tubby was still fired that same year as his one NCAA win. CBJ would have to do more than win 1 game to save his job.

Ben will save or lose his job in the next two weeks. 5 games. Anything less than 3-2 and he should be fired on December 10th.

Yeah, I think the goal posts have moved for Ben Johnson. I'm not saying I agree with it, I never would have hired him. However, I don't think Tubby Smith or Richard Pitino would have survived a 15-44 conference record through three seasons. In the extremely unlikely scenario that the Gophers when an NCAA game this year, there is zero chance Ben would lose his job.

Let's face it, Ben will not be coaching the Gophers in 2025/2026. Rarely are coaches fired in December so I'm guessing that won't happen. With the bottom 3 in the BIG(18) NOT going to the BIG tournament when the Gophers are locked into one of those bottom three slots that will be a good time to hand him the pink slip. It will most likely be with 2-3 games remaining in the regular season. Firing him then will give the Gophers a head start on a coaching search prior to other teams even finishing their season. I would target the top 3 coaches in any non P6 conference.

Johnson should have been canned after the '22-'23 season, when it was clear he was a failure.

Every day since then is just delaying the inevitable while continuing to dig the program deeper and deeper into a hole. The hole becomes more and more difficult to climb out of with each passing day.

Stop the bleeding. Fire him now, and start the process of recovery. Waiting simply makes it more difficult. There is ZERO chance at recovery maintaining the status quo.

I can't think of a better time to let him go than 12-24-24. I mean, think about it, what an unbelievable Xmas gift that would be for Ben. No more stress of playing 6 players just to try and save his job. I can only imagine what a huge burden would be lifted from his shoulders.

How can we say buh bye to Ben but keep the recruits for next year? lol I do think he's got "some" talent coming in. I wanted it to work for Ben, but it is just time. He sure knows how to handle a press conference and say what people want to hear.

My glass-half-empty brain says they won't win a single conference game.

I doubt that. After all, the team two years ago won 2 conference games. This team (when healthy) is and should be better than that one because it's older and more experienced. It also helps to have one of the best scorers in the league. Yes, they had Garcia two years ago but he is better and more confident now.

Right now, if I had to guess, I'd say they'll win something in the range of 4 to 6 conference games. Their defense and pace of play should keep more than a few games close enough to where anything can happen. Of course, that result shouldn't be close enough to get a 5th year for the coach.

They think a coaching change will make a difference.

And they could be right. And you could be right.

You keep reminding us that you believe we're doomed to be bad no matter who we hire as a coach because of the new environment where we'll never be able to compete successfully. Really, you can knock it off now because we've all seen you write that sentiment countless times.

What you don't seem to grasp is that belief is no excuse for not taking steps to improve especially when it hasn't been proven that a new coach couldn't help.

They are going to have to invest big money in a coach that can shock the program back into existence. That coach will have to cause enough excitement to inspire NIL, inspire recruits to sign on and also cause a return almost instantly of a portion of the fan base to recreate our home court advantage.

The U basically fated Ben to fail. You don't take a coach with no experience and no players and tell him to go out and compete in this conference when we haven't really done it for 25 years at a high level. That's just stupid.
