Best solution: Bring back Glenn Mason..

Re-hiring Mason would be far from the dumbest thing they could do, but at this point its
somewhat unrealistic.

I opposed his firing. What people tended to forget was that in his final season he did
maybe his finest coaching job- rallying his squad down the stretch where they played
VERY good football ( some of the best football in the Big Ten for those final 3 weeks).

The bowl game?

On any given Saturday you can find examples of big leads blown somewhere around the
country. Its the nature of kids these last 15 years or so. They're fine kids but the
last 1-2 generations of kids do not seem to have the "killer instinct" that previous
generations had. I see it all the time in kids these days.

Throw in TT's offense, and there you go.

When Holtz took over a 5-5-1 Arkansas team in 1977, he had his initial spring
practice- which was typically intense Holtz-style. He was asked by a reporter
after spring practice what the team established in the three weeks, to which he
said, "We established who was going to coach this football team".

No follow-up question was needed. Holtz went 11-1 that year largely with
Broyles' players.

Seeing what I'm seeing of the Gophers today and this season, The U
needs a hard-biting disciplinarian who will whip this team beyond what it
thinks is possible. That is what's needed most.

Letsgogophers - What are you talking about? I supported Mason while he was our coach. I've supported Brewster while he's been our coach. I don't think either one will, or should, be our coach next year.

Read my post. Mason wasn't the only coach that won here. Based on your reasoning, Gutekunst should still be coaching as he did as well, maybe better, than Mason.

I don't think firing Mason was a mistake. I think it was done too late, and we hired the wrong guy. Mason did not win here - he only had a winning record in te Big Ten in two of ten seasons. That's not winning!

probably the dumbers sh** i have ever read! mason is not a guy who would take this program anywhere but a 2-3 win big ten season. we would not go to a rose bowl and we would not ever go to a national championship. stop bringing up mason he sucked just like brewster. you are a tool to even make this thread and i hope someone kicks you in the nuts!

Face the facts..
1. We will lose this years recruiting class
2. Next years class will be average at best
3. It will take 5-6 years just to hopefully rebuild to Glen Mason's average season
4. Another two to get to his dominate seasons.
Getting rid of Mason has really paid off! You Brewster guys got what you wanted, another decade of futility.

"dominate seasons" under Mason? When were those? The two 5-3 seasons he had in the Big Ten, when he finished in 4th or 5th place.

This reminds me of when I first caught wind of Moss returning to the Vikes ... it was almost bizarre to think that Brett Favre in purple would be throwing to Randy Moss in purple. Now people are seriously - seriously - touting Glenn Mason as a potential hire. Its just something I would have never expected to hear in my lifetime. And, I was a Mason backer ... but wow let's move on.

Bring back Mason?????!!!! Are you kidding???? Give me a $%^&%%$$ing break. If you want someone who will beat all the Akrons and Buffalos in the college world and then fold up and lose in the Big Ten season to a to gain a berth in a minor bowl game(and find horrible ways to blow them also), then hire back Mason. He had some of the best offensive threats yet had no clue about defense and seemingly didn't care. Look at the successful college programs and see how many poins per game they give up and the compare that to Mason's abysmal attemps.
Getting rid of Mason was correct for all the reasons at the time. He would never get you any better than mediocrity. Hiring Brewster with no experience as a HC was not the solution.

Huh? Wasn't Brew second season pretty dang close to Mason's average season? 5-6 years is ridiculous and you know it.

Your a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing retard for wanting mason back. He's a barely a step up from brewster!

What will it take for people to understand that no matter how wrong the Brewster hiring was, it does nothing to change the fact that firing Mason was 100% the right move.

Let's bring back Mason?

So he can interview with other college football programs while he's our new head football coach?

Yes, that's what he did before with Ohio State, and he flirted with a few other programs as well!

I get this type of crap all the time...people think that because Brew hasnt been a good coach, that firing Mason was the wrong move. Firing Mason was actually the right move, we just didnt hire the right guy afterward

How in the world was firing Mason the right move? I can understand not wanting to rehire him, but admit it, it was the WRONG move. We were better off with him.

This is quite possibly the worst post I've ever read on this board. I'm dumber for reading it.

I did not believe firing Mason was the right move. But you cannot put the toothpaste back in the tube. Move on.

Those were Glen Mason coached teams for you, playing some of the best football in the Big Ten against teams that went 3-5, 1-7 and 2-6 in Big Ten play after getting pounded by the teams that finished in to top half of the conference.
