Re-hiring Mason would be far from the dumbest thing they could do, but at this point its
somewhat unrealistic.
I opposed his firing. What people tended to forget was that in his final season he did
maybe his finest coaching job- rallying his squad down the stretch where they played
VERY good football ( some of the best football in the Big Ten for those final 3 weeks).
The bowl game?
On any given Saturday you can find examples of big leads blown somewhere around the
country. Its the nature of kids these last 15 years or so. They're fine kids but the
last 1-2 generations of kids do not seem to have the "killer instinct" that previous
generations had. I see it all the time in kids these days.
Throw in TT's offense, and there you go.
When Holtz took over a 5-5-1 Arkansas team in 1977, he had his initial spring
practice- which was typically intense Holtz-style. He was asked by a reporter
after spring practice what the team established in the three weeks, to which he
said, "We established who was going to coach this football team".
No follow-up question was needed. Holtz went 11-1 that year largely with
Broyles' players.
Seeing what I'm seeing of the Gophers today and this season, The U
needs a hard-biting disciplinarian who will whip this team beyond what it
thinks is possible. That is what's needed most.
