In the hypothetical scenario that gophers collapse and finish like 8-12 and Ben is fired for having two horrendous years followed by a disappointing 3rd year in a down big 10, your logic is that every coach should also be fired if they finished lower than the gophers?

Ignoring the fact that those coaches may have track records of winning and/or less sustained losing?

Seriously, its why these threads never die. Gophers lose and people say insane shit to defend Ben. They win, and people find insane ways to say it doesnt matter. Wash, rinse, repeat.

If you have a logical reason for why Steve Pikiel(if rutgers finishes below us) should be held to the same job status standard as Ben this year, I am all ears. But saying simply because he finished worse this year, aint gonna cut it

Don't forget that it's actually "good" that Dawson Garcia is "slowed down" with an injury. We don't want him to do too well and leave. Only next year matters. Or something.

You didn't ask the question to me, but I'll give my answer. Any coach in a P6 conference that has never been a HC at any level, finished historically dead last in the conf his first 2 years and in his third year does not make the NCAA of NIT should be fired. Clear enough??

I don't disagree. Probably should never have been hired in the first place. I just think that experienced coaches have less of an excuse to finish poorly, while other posters think that experience gives them a pass to have bad years. Appreciate you answering and not flopping around the question.

I do think Ben will get at least one more year. The only way he doesn't is if there is some kind of total collapse. I'm optimistic for Ben and the Gophers in 2024. They need a jump in 2024-2025 just like they had a jump from 2023-2024. Can't be less that 10-10 next winter. Have to have NCAA or maybe just miss and have a strong NIT.
 


Record or not, one of the major criteria in deciding BJ fate will be roster retention! If it looks like he can keep this core roster intact his record will prove irrelevant!

^This is a tough one. Over 90% of D1 teams lose at least one player to the portal. Over 20% of all players enter the portal. Almost 50% don't have a roster spot the next season. It will depend on who leaves and what the new season roster looks like. Don't know exactly what the AD is looking at. No easy decisions.

Do you have any specific "experienced" coaches in mind?

First off, I'm leaning towards bringing CBJ back another year, I would re-evaluate the circumstances if there's another "WW".
All of these "experienced" coaches have been to the NCAA's, either with their current school or previous school. `All except Hoiberg in the last 3 years; Hoiberg has got to be on shaky ground and it wouldn't surprise me if there are changes at other schools. How have the Gophers been the past 3 years? Yea, he's a 1st time coach. Yea, Haskins and Pitino had poor years. But they eventually had some success. Success that came in a period of time that CBJ is fast approaching.

He also won the NIT in year 1, and then had to deal with Tubby not leaving anything in the cupboard with his last two recruiting classes. With no immediate free transfer, year 3 was always going to be bad. That team would have been a lot better if just Lynch could have played, and they knew they were getting him and Coffey to add to a young core in year 4. I think any AD would have given him another year regardless.

Oh and that terrible team still beat the #6 team in the country at home that season.

He was in hot water more for the off-court stuff than the wins/losses.

247. They have Asuma ranked 98th while Christie was 84th and Coffey 81st. Rivals isn't considered to be very good anymore.

Was Coffey hampered by shoulder injuries his senior year? I thought he was as high as 40s after junior year but he slipped late.

Not really a new concept or all that unusual. Happens all the time where sites have pretty widely different rankings on players, especially once you get beyond the best of the best to where things get far more subjective.

His composite was around 50. I just don't take the composite very seriously anymore because ESPN and Rivals aren't very good.
