There still is some interest in cards and some value but it is through the expensive brands. One of my friends pointed me to a website (the name escapes me now) where you can watch people open the super expensive stuff hunting for the gems. They will have them cast live or upload videos.

You can also split cases (multiple boxes of cards) with other people from around the country or world and you all chip in money. You then just get the amount of boxes or packs you're entitled to.
 

Bumping this thread. I started going through my cards recently, it really brings me back to my childhood. I have quite a few that I'm close to having the full set. I have more football and basketball cards than I remembered. For those interested, I found this website where you can buy individual cards to complete sets.

We recently moved and I found the boxes of my old cards. Besides a few signed ones (kirby puckett, Kent Hrbek and some others) I just threw them all away.

Not exactly "baseball cards".....but I've been putting together a decent set of Gopher cards over the past six months or so. Mostly through Ebay....where you can get them pretty cheap.

All signed: Bobby Jackson, Vincent Grier, Quincy Lewis, Trent Tucker (but in a Knicks Uni :(), Maxx Williams, Adam Weber, David Cobb Lawrence Maroney.

I'm planning to fill up a card display case with nothing but Gopher signed cards. Need a Whalen card for sure. And Hockey would definitely help.

What else was I going to do with them? They had already made a half dozen moves and they hadn't come out of the boxes once. We just moved into our forever home, no point of moving them again and storing them for 30+ years for no reason. In the trash they went. Threw a lot of stuff away, gave a ton to goodwill, it was great.
 




Added K.J. Maye, Eric Murray, and the great Ron Johnson to my Gophers signed card collection this morning.

Generally it should be easy enough to sell them. Truthfully I don't recall where mine ended up stored and they probably aren't in great condition.

I don't think they were worth very much and I wasn't going to go through them to seeif there were any expensive ones there. We were busy enough with the move.

So you've had thousands of posts on GH, but didn't think to make just one more to say, hey, any of ya'll want these here thingies that some of you may actually want that I'm otherwise going to huff into the trash bag? lol

A card shop would have given you something for the whole thing without going through card by card. But to each his own.

Nope, because no one else has posted something like that around here either. Plus what if Beeg or KGF wanted them and they show up and murder me?

Yeah I guess. I don't even know where the nearest card shop is anymore. Do shinders (or whatever it was called) still exist?

So are there actual card shops still? Honestly is there even a market for baseball cards anymore? Maybe I just grew out of that phase and dont' care anymore.
 

Oh....and I bought a signed Blake Hoffarber basketball yesterday. Why? I don't know. It just happened to be there. But every time I look at it.....I'll be reminded of the 2008 Big Ten Tournament game that the refs tried to steal from us.

I don't believe God generally weighs in on sporting events, but that was definitely him saying "this is so egregious, I have to fix it." Most blatant attempt to steal a game by officials that I've ever seen.

There are only a small handful of traditional card shops in the Twin Cities and a few decent card shows a year...nothing like the peak 80s years.

Although personally, I think KGF and Beeg seem like good dudes outside of politics and aren't RW nutjobs you actually should be afraid of.
 



If you go onto Twitter, there's a few really fun sites, I can't access them right now (the Great Firewall of China), but they have names likes Sport Card Backs or Baseball Card Backs, they certainly fire up the nostalgia for the early '80s when I lived and breathed baseball cards.

I've been developing a theory as of late, that one of the reasons that MLB has faded into relative obscurity (compared to the NFL and NBA) is not only due to the explosion of fantasy football since the '90s, but also due to the demise of affordable baseball cards. About the time I got out of the "game", was when Upper Deck joined the likes of Topps, Donruss, and Fleer and the price of a pack got jacked up from 50 cents to $1 (ah, I recall the days of quarter packs). After Upper Deck came along, I recall things going bonkers with prices and easy, cheap access was gone. Much of my knowledge about baseball players came from the backs of those cards and when I would turn on the Saturday or Monday night games of the week (back in those halcyon days), I had a familiarity with the players that I don't today. I'm sure it's quite simplistic, but baseball wasn't exactly a fast game back in the 80s and there were other distractions (albeit not as many as today), but those cheap baseball cards provided a familiarity and accessibility to the game that seems to be missing nowadays.

MLB generated record revenue of $10.3 billion in 2018, well ahead of the $7.4 billion generated by the NBA. The NFL is still first at $14 billion, but has seen decreased viewership for 3 straight years and plummeting numbers in other factors of league health such as Super Bowl ad spend and youth participation in football.

Good for you BB. Throwing stuff away is so hard, but so worth it. I'm down to 4-5 shoe boxes full of cards. Even my good cards are not in good enough condition to be sellable. I've gone to some card shows, and every thing has to be rated and perfect for anyone to want it. And most of the stuff I have is 80s baseball cards which are almost worthless. I should toss em. I do love my old hockey cards, especially the year where you had to scratch off the puck to see the name of the player. Of course, not scratching that off makes the card more valuable.
 

I really need to go through my cards and just pick out one small box full and sell the rest on Craigslist for $10. I have a box that's about 18" cubed. It doesn't take up that much space, but it's wasted space. Like you, most of mine were acquired between 1984 and 1990.

One thing that baseball cards were very good for during that period: gifts. I wish my kids collected something.
