It's from spring of 2014, but it's so obviously true. It absolutely happens, in the way the guy describes. Maybe only down in SEC country, but also could easily see this in various other parts of the country.

The coach may not even want it, or realize it's happening (probably unlikely, but possible). These are nothing more than very dedicated fans, with a bit of spare change burning holes in their pockets.

Not too long ago, there was a feature about college football players and their rides.

Bama had a bunch of athletes showing off fancy wheels albeit used cars.

Not saying that the kids bought the cars themselves or someone "donated" them.

Do coaches like Saban own car dealerships?
 

My friends father played football for Colorado a long, long time ago, in the mid '60's. He told me the story that the team back then just went to the pharmacy for their pay. He mentioned that a prescription bottle was as tall as bills were wide. So the team members would walk into the pharmacy, go to pick up their "prescription" which was designated for each player. Depending on how valuable you were to the program, a certain amount of bills were rolled up and placed in your prescription bottle.

Another friend tutored basketball players at Illinois back in the '80's and the players there simply got ATM cards when they enrolled, and money magically appeared in their accounts, with no idea who funded the accounts.

When I lived in Florida, I met a guy who played for the Gators in the early 80's. He said after games boosters would come into the locker room to walk around and shake hands with the players. Each outstretched hand would contain a varying number of rolled up $100 bills. He was a stiff so he never was a recipient, but some players would get so many they would pass them out to the "less fortunate".

I went to high school with a guy who played football for Augsburg (in the early 90's). This guy got paid a nice weekly wage to make sure the pop machine was turned on. Granted, no full rides at Augsburg, but still...
 

Organized cheating is institutionalized in parts of the country. Lots of money are at stake with a football program. You will never be able to stamp it out.

Even in basketball. Whatever happened to UNC basketball cheating? They got some powerful attorneys and politicians behind UNC. They didn't call it cheating. They manufactured some cockamamie narrative that that class was available to all students. Therefore, it is not cheating.

The NCAA doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds it. But, if you are Minnesota they'd vacate your wins.

As an Augsburg grad, all I can say is, "It figures." The football team has rarely figured it out. Here's what we got for that in the early 90s:

1990 0-10
1991 2-7
1992 3-7
1993 5-5
 

In today's The Athletic, there is a round table discussion with unnamed current and former coaches. Much of the talk centered on cheating in the SEC. It includes tales of cash left in parking ticket envelopes, funneling money through casinos and churches, and head coaches outright telling assistants during job interviews that they are expected to skirt the law.
