Badgers coach Bo Ryan steps down as UW head coach immediately

You're right that was the announcement, but it's been talked about how he would have preferred to retire right then, but threw in the extra year because of the health of Gard's father (plus Alvarez not guaranteeing Gard the job)

Like the Senator who did nothing at the Minneapolis airport embarrassing?

"Ryan said that part of the reason he came back for this season was to give Gard time to be with his father, Glen, who was diagnosed with cancer in the spring and died this fall. Ryan said the demands on Gard's time to fly around the country meeting with doctors and helping his dad put his retirement on the back burner. Following Glen Gard's death, Ryan then spoke with Alvarez and decided the semester break would be a good time to step down."

Is that good enough reason to wait till now to step down? Or will it still be Bo quit on the team and didn't want to go out coaching a bad team?

That seems reasonable to me, Gard would have been the interim coach starting in the fall if Bo had quit then anyway, interesting thing is they started the rumor that he might coach beyond 15-16 to benefit recruiting.

The question now becomes: Did the team know of this arrangement, and when did they find out?

My sources indicate that this is a part of a strategy planned well in advance between at least Alarvez and Ryan and probably others. In Wisconsin, if a University coach resigns State Law requires the position be posted unless it is during the sport season. If during the season an interim coach can be named. Bo wants Gard to get the job. The University while not necessarily agreeing with Bo, are giving it some consideration. This move allows Gard to step in interim wise and not have the job posted. At the end of the season as interim coach Gard can be given the job without posting the position. Gard is still in a position that he has to prove himself, but at least if he impresses Alvarez (probably already won Alvarez over) and other key University people he could get the job handed to him. Once an interim coach is liked by the appropriate folks the interim coach doesn't have to contend with a posting of the position.

With all due respect, your sources are full of crap. Alvarez would chair any hiring committee. If he wanted Gard, they would hire Gard.

Seriously, for any job, if you are internal and can't win the comp., you don't deserve the job. The earlier rumours about Alvarez not wanting Gard are more credible.

I stand by my version. The Badgers are lousy and Bo is a tired 67 year old.

You are both wrong.

No way this is right. No way "Alarvez" would agree to this. And why didn't Bo retire after the first game? Why coach 10 games? Doesn't make any sense that this was the "strategy planned well in advance between Alarvez and Ryan and others".

Nah.

HInts of the truth are out there if you look for it and it will likely come out in time.

Honest question

Now that Bo is stepping down, this won't happen but I'm curious how you think he would be received in Williams Arena if he announced that he was retiring at the end of the season so this year would be a Farewell Tour? Is the reception here on GH indicative of how the crowd would react?

So after a lot of research (more than I care to say), I finally figured out what the rumors are for the most part. There are two rumors that appear to be mutually exclusive but very interesting to say the least.

The first one is that the whole tug of war between Bo and Barry about Gard becoming the successor may not be what is actually happening behind closed doors. Rumor has it that they actually agree that Gard should be the successor. However, they think that because of an earlier attempt of putting an assistant in charge would not be so well received. If you can recall (I didn't. Again.... more time spent on this than I care to say) that after Dick Bennett retired three games into the 2000-01 season his top assistant was put in charge for the rest of the season and had a rough year. Apparently, they are worried that the boosters and fan base wouldn't be so accepting of a in house successor because of this previous blunder. So getting back to the rumor, apparently the tug of war about Gard is just a ruse by Bo and Barry so that they can give Gard a chance at being the coach. Where this rumor becomes for sure false is that they may have tried to make a couple games close earlier in the year (ones they ended up losing) to manage expectations for Gard so that boosters and the fan base would be satisfied with a solid rest of the season instead of having expectations of a team they had the last few years.

The second rumor is where it gets downright weird and juicy. Rumor has it Bo had a "relationship" with a younger women that runs with the wrong crowd. This wrong crowd made Bo and his family's life a nightmare. Things happened and one of these sketch monsters was murdered in Madison last Friday night ( http://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/Madison-Police-investigate-death-on-East-side-361663111.html ) . Bo did nothing wrong, other than the whole affair and inappropriate relationship thing, but as far as the murder goes Bo was not involved at all. All in all, Bo had a "relationship" with a younger women that led to a bad situation that would cast a dark shadow on the program. May have sped up the retirement process.

Again, all of this is rumor. I did not create the rumor nor am I the AP. All of this is not fact. Just thought that gopherhole should know. Long time reader, post almost never. A few of you could take a page out of the whole "read more, post less" book. But enough of my yammin. Have fun with these rumors. If anybody needs me I'll be at the Vu

Just because Bo says something doesn't mean its true. If he really did cut and run to protect his record from the crap team he assembled this year, there is no way he would admit that.

Thanks for digging around for this. I always hate the tone of badgerdoc of the "its out there, I know something you don't" crap. slarson, I appreciate you doing the digging and not acting hollier than thou with the info. Interesting indeed.

Yes it would probably be close to how it has been on gopherhole. Most appreciating that he was a good coach regardless of if they like him or not.

I didn't hear the whole "women who runs with the wrong crowd" part but a friend did say something about the infidelity part. Just said the family has all kind of issues right now. Mentioned one of his daughters won't even speak to him. Nothing else specific.

Like slarson said, just a rumor so take it with a grain of salt.

I saw a lot of posts alluding to an affair, also. I did see the murder story linked also, but wasn't sure if the poster was serious or not. I hope we get the full story eventually.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I think it's significantly more probable that Bo is capable of murdering someone, than it is that someone is capable of having sex with Bo.

You are not the only one. +1.

You can SEE what you want to see on the blow by handshake from Bo to Ellenson. I saw it as a dick move by a local kid who played a great game.

This is going to blow up like the "Craig James murdered five hookers" meme. Mike Leach will even include it in his book signings.

Probably with a Duck Boat Riot chant

I enjoyed his interview after the Duke game last year. Blaming the refs and letting the country see what a d*ck he is.

I agree that he was a difficult man to like. However, as a long-time college basketball fan, I found him an easy coach to respect. I wish Minnesota would have followed Wisconsin's lead by hiring a more mature individual with a long track record of success instead of hiring Pitino.

Bo is virtually an IMPOSSIBLE coach to respect. Sorry.

Easy to respect his accomplishments and his success? Absolutely. What he did at Wisky was absolutely amazing.

But the man is an ass and a bully and when given the opportunity (as Maximus pointed out), he had no problems showing his true colors. In tough situations, you see what people are really all about and Bo showed that plenty. Izzo has had his run of success at MSU even longer than Bo did at Wisky and yet you never hear people on this board b!tching about Izzo's character.

Bo is simply devoid of character. Period. Sorry...
