Badgers coach Bo Ryan steps down as UW head coach immediately

"Ryan said that part of the reason he came back for this season was to give Gard time to be with his father, Glen, who was diagnosed with cancer in the spring and died this fall. Ryan said the demands on Gard's time to fly around the country meeting with doctors and helping his dad put his retirement on the back burner. Following Glen Gard's death, Ryan then spoke with Alvarez and decided the semester break would be a good time to step down."

Is that good enough reason to wait till now to step down? Or will it still be Bo quit on the team and didn't want to go out coaching a bad team?

Best B10 winning percentage of all time..better than Keady, better than Knight, better than Izzo. He did a hell of a job! I respect that this is a gopher message board and most hate Bo Ryan, flame on!

You are wrong. Listen to the presser after the game last night. Bo wanted to retire after last season and hand the program over to Gard at that time. Gard found out in the spring his father was very ill with cancer. Gard wanted to spend time with his father and help him find treatment, so Bo continued to run the team. Gard's father unfortunately passed away in the fall. After talking it over with Gard and Alvarez, it was decided that he would then step down at the semester. Nice try at making him sound like the devil though.

The question now becomes: Did the team know of this arrangement, and when did they find out?

Having personalities like Bo on your primary rivals is what makes sports fun, in my opinion. I'm not going to take any cheap shots at a guy who escalated a program like he did. Tip of the cap -- great career.

Is this the backlash to shunning Henry Ellenson? Maybe Ruppert was on to something.

Good riddance, good coach but his bullying of referees was shameful and should not have been tolerated.

Agreed 100%. Never cared for him. I also didn't care for the ugly style of basketball. As students said, F*** Bo Ryan.

He is no angle either by giving him a losing team to keep his legacy at Madison. Why didn't he give the team to him last year?

Furthermore, "...Ryan stressed he wasn't leaving the players after six months, but rather that he got an extra six months with them for staying on this long." I've had quite a few harsh words about Bo over the years, but I can't criticize the timing of his exit. Avoiding his first lower-division finish might be one of a number of reasons why, but it's not the primary one.

I admit that this is bittersweet. Sweet because it seemingly removes a major obstacle to Gopher success, including recruiting this state. Bitter because Wisconsin hasn't really been Minnesota's problem; Minnesota has been Minnesota's problem. If anything, a program like Bo's Badgers should make us better by presenting a constant challenge and providing a template for success. If we can't up our game under that circumstance, why do we think we will now?

The other bitterness is that I take pride in my alma mater playing in the best and best coached conference in the nation. I would want it to be no other way. I have loved that we face the best two times a week in the winter, and that includes the best coaches. This will degrade that to an extent. There will not be another Bo at Wisconsin.

Ryan is simply a fantastic coach, a downright amazing teacher of winning basketball and developer of players. Unlike most people, I've enjoyed watching his teams play, including - I'm serious - on offense. He found a way to do it sustainably for 31+ years without burning out or losing effectiveness (e.g. Knight, Smith). The game never passed him by. That's cool to see in any profession.

I understand why Alvarez would want to go outside the program for the next coach. That's where they got Bennett and Ryan after all. I'm sure Dick would have preferred Soderberg get the job after him, and he would have been good but not great. Even great coaches turn out to be poor evaluators in picking their successor (e.g. Grant/Steckel). But Gard deserves his shot; we'll see how much of one he gets.

Pretty convenient following losses to Western Illinois and Milwaukee and with no recruits signed yet.....

"Everybody kind of thinks they know when they're ready to retire; I'm not totally sure," Ryan said at a golf tournament Wednesday, according to PostCrescent.com. "[Wisconsin AD] Barry [Alvarez] said I could change my mind at any time. I haven't submitted any papers yet. I haven't submitted anything. ... So I might stay for another four or five [years]."

"Well, I needed to get a statement out there knowing I wasn't able to tell recruits I could guarantee them four years," Ryan said. "And I wanted to be fair to our staff and Barry."

"I wouldn't be the first guy in the country that ever thought about retirement and then changed their mind," Ryan said. "I'm not doing anything revolutionary here."

A fair summation, BG. Well done.

I won't miss the success he's had while the Gophers have mired mostly in mediocrity, but will miss seeing Bo's antics on the Williams Arena sidelines, just like when Knight, Heathcote, Keady, etc., moved on, and just like I will when Izzo is done. I find great characters are much more difficult to replace than great coaches. Some (the guys previously mentioned) were/are great at being both.

My thoughts:

Great coach, glad he is gone. Duck Boat Riot!

I believe that Bo wanted to give Gard a chance, but I question whether Bo makes the same decision if the team was 11-1.

Puts Gard in a really tough spot to succeed. Everyone knows that this year was going to be a struggle, but when they end up missing the tournament it will make it easier for Barry to cut ties.

Barry hasn't hired a basketball coach as AD, interested to see how he goes about it.

If there is something more to the story, it will come out. Barry won't be able to help himself.

I want to know what was in the prepared remarks that he had but didn't read, cuz what he said was sort of a rambling mess. Not nearly as moving as Kill's presser. Jerry made me cry, with Bo I just smiled the whole time.

Moving forward, should we go with "Stuck Keg Card" or "Truck Leg Yard"?

Quitter. Quit on his team mid season. Quitter.

Good riddance.

Agree to disagree.

Bo doesn't think Alvarez will give the job to Gard. If Bo thought Gard was going to get the permanent job, Bo would have stepped down after last season. Bo obviously didn't receive a guarantee from Alvarez that Gard would get the job, so he coached on. Retiring now, quitting now, however we choose to phrase it, he's doing it so Gard gets a chance to be the head coach at the University of Wisconsin. Look at it the other way. ... what if Gard turns this season around for the Badgers? That could happen, though it will be difficult with the Badgers' brutal B1G schedule. Bo figures it's better for Gard to get a chance (rest of this season) than no chance at all.

We can't forget about how much power Alvarez has in Madison. More than Bo, despite Bo's accomplished career at UW. Bo is still #2 in Madison. I'd argue "mutiny" is a strong word as well. I'm guessing there's a good share of the UW fan base that wouldn't mind seeing Alvarez look outside the program for his new coach. Why wouldn't he, with UW's current status as one of the elite programs in the country? Some really good coaches will want to take over at an elite B1G basketball program.

This is correct in my opinion. Alvarez said he wouldn't just give Gard the job. He wanted to do a search for the next coach.

How bout a bit of loyalty to his players? He bails on his kids at the first sign of failure, and gets to avoid a mediocre record staining his resume? Weak, weak move. These coaches preach loyalty and accountability non stop and then jump ship when it suits them.

Reminds me a lot of the Steve Spurrier retirement this fall.

The bold reminds me of one of my favorite conspiracy theories. In October 1995, Coach K at Duke has back surgery. He returns for the start of the season, the team is completely terrible, and he steps down in January 1996 to take a leave of absence because his back hurts. His assistant takes over, and none of the subsequent losses that season go on Coach K's record. I like a good conspiracy theory.

Quitter. Quit on his team mid season. Quitter.

Are you putting any qualifiers on this?

Hmmm. You do realize our football coach quit mid-season just a couple months ago?

One quit for his own health reasons. I take no issue with that.

The other quit so his long-time loyal assistant/friend would at least get a chance at the permanent position. ... according to the vibe Bo is getting from his AD, one Gard is highly unlikely to get. I take no issue with that, either.

There are some interesting rumors about why this really happened now, if you look around hard enough. Who knows if there is anything to them. There probably isn't.

I won't miss being at an 8 on 5 disadvantage every time we go to Kohl Center. But you have to respect the job he did. One way or another Tony Bennett is about to get a raise.

I've never liked the way he handles himself during games but I've always respected the job he has done. Always did things the right way. Hopefully it isn't health related in any way.

Well bring them on. If you know of crazy rumors and don't post them you are doing a disservice to the board.

Clearly he expects a bumper crop of stolen children's toys this year and wants more time to focus on it. Hard to blame him.

Yes, health or family reasons take precedence. I don' buy that assistant coach crap. If he was 11-0 I bet he would still be on the job. I wish him a long and healthy retirement. Obviously he was one heck of a coach. That can't be argued. Nonetheless he was and is a jackass. The Ellenson flap is just icing on the cake.

As is, he quit mid season on his team. A quitter. Good riddance. May Bucky Badger flounder for decades to come.

Agreed 100%. He can try to spin this all he wants as "giving Gard a chance" etc. But if the Badgers had 1 or 2 losses right now instead of 5, there is zero chance Bo would be stepping down right now.

Just to clarify, I have joked about it, but the Ellenson flap seems to be a Rupprt creation. Even the Marquette fans missed it and they would be all over something like that.

The Grinch stole Xmas and now he stole the Badgers b-ball season.

He was a great coach and I am glad he is gone.

Wasn't he going to retire before the season except for the Gard situation?

Wasn't he going to retire before the season except for the Gard situation?

I thought the announcement originally is that this season would be his last. Then he kinda backed off on that after it was reported Alvarez wasn't just going to hand it over to Gard.

My memory isn't very good so I could be wrong.

There's a bunch of posters on Buckyville claiming to know the "real" reason he retired, but no one is posting it.

This is the most interesting post I saw:

"Assuming this is all the same rumor, it's not about health issues and it's not being shared online because it's very embarrassing/harmful. I hope it's just nonsense."

You're right that was the announcement, but it's been talked about how he would have preferred to retire right then, but threw in the extra year because of the health of Gard's father (plus Alvarez not guaranteeing Gard the job)
