Illinois women complete season sweep of Minnesota

"On the defensive end, Minnesota’s Mara Braun was a problem for Illinois. Braun was shooting lights out from three, going perfect until her first miss late in the first half. The Gophers were able to stick with Illinois going into the half knotted up at 35.

The Illini came out of the locker room on a mission, scoring the first six points out of the break while Minnesota struggled to get started offensively.

Illinois’ defense would hold Minnesota to 10 points in the third quarter and headed into the last frame with an 8-point lead — despite going on a scoring drought of more than three minutes."

On the contrary, the announcers kept saying that you need to go to what's working for you and that's Cook. And then Cook was a consistent presence. There is not truth to the Illinois coach taking Cook out of the game.

Do I really have to post more pictures to make this clear?

Braun got the Gophers to the half-time tie. She got them there.

Then Whalen lost the game by putting Braun on the bench who had got them there.

Yet again, the Gophers lost another close one.

I wasn’t watching it on tv since since I don’t have Big10 +. I was watching live stats on gopher sports and saw Braun go in and out for less than a minute at least 2 times maybe 3. Maybe they got it wrong but that’s what I saw.

I posted another picture in my last post of a wide open Illinois player scoring. It appears Gradwell on defense was preferred to Mara Braun on defense.

Really sad to see Braun's shooting percentage go into the tank since coming to Minnesota and now apparently Mara Braun's defense allegedly (I don't believe it) has been so diminished that it's better to play Gradwell over Mara Braun -- at one time the consensus top prospect in Minnesota.

And then Illinois gets open looks to score. While Mara Braun sits on the bench.

Watching the video, she's not at all diminished when she does get to come in at 28 seconds.

For Illinois, Cook was in the game down the stretch. I am not aware of any controversy of Cook being out.

You can see tape on Braun’s lower right leg as she stands at free throw line and no way we can see under her socks. We certainly don’t have mri eyes, but I too don’t recall announcers mentioning an injury. There is only the tape and inadequate defense so injury issue is certainly possible.

Yes, but reporter could have made a mistake. Even if not, she had tape on lower right leg and that likely is an indicator of some medical situation even if irrelevant to Mara’s performance today.

I thought Katie played pretty well. Didn’t get shots to fall but was great leader, great defense, distributes and took better care of ball and good shot selection. The last 2 areas are still the ones that need the most sustained focus because of having most room for improvement.

Battle was struggling on defense and turning the ball over. Mara Braun (foot issues?) was also struggling mightily on defense and had some bad turnovers. Coach chose to go with the players taking care of the ball, defending and rebounding. I wouldn't go as far as to say she was sending a message, but that group went from down 10 points to tied with a couple of minutes to play.

As far as somebody else wondering about running plays for Heyer. Seems like they always run 3-4 plays with her as the eventual target for a 3-point shot. Pretty sure they ran at least 3 backdoor plays for her yesterday. Two were defended and she got a lay-up on a 3rd. They also ran a baseline backdoor for Cayton late in the game, but the pass went through her hands. Unfortunately, that would have been a key bucket to get.

Despite much of my criticism, this is a respectable coaching decision. Good lesson for young players: if I'm not getting it done and my replacement is then I'm going to sit. Regardless of how highly touted I am. I just wish it would have ended in a win, so it wouldn't be second guessed.

Katie has received a lot of criticism. Quarter Backs usually are the first to blame. However, no one on the team plays with as much energy and enthusiasm as Katie. I wish it was more infectious. She does jack up some bad shots. Some of the time, no one else will shoot and she has to take the shot before time expires. Braun can't shoot threes with someone in her face and she doesn't seem to get herself open. Battle is not good at shooting threes. Heyer and others will shoot threes but not consistent enough. Katie also makes some crazy turnovers. I wish our taller players were as willing to go to the basket. Some of Katie's turnover passes are not her fault--people are not ready for the ball or don't want it. No one on the team plays defense as hard as Katie. Sometimes, she picks up a fair number of fouls. However, we have players that pick up no fouls in a game, which says that they are not playing defensive hard. Katie ranks 7th in the Big Ten in average steals per game. There are no stats on how much a player disrupts the opponent or forces them to throw the ball away. I think Katie would rank high on that. So, I get frustrated with Katie's miscues but I think there is more blame to be passed around.

We are the worst shooting team in the B1G. We are dead last from three with a .258% and dead last from the field with a .378%. I didn't anticipate such ineptitude.

From three in conference play:
Braun is 22-64 (.344); Mara is worse from inside the arc at .240
Heyer is 14-58 (.241)
Borowicz is 9-47 (.191)

Gradwell is 5-19 (.263)
Battle is 3-7

Thankfully, Micheaux who has not taken a three is 8th in FG%

I agree with most of what you say other than I think most of her turnovers are on her and not because of teammate miscues. Katie is the best leader on the team right now and is one of the MVPs after Rose because all of the things she does well.

I think some of her poor inside shooting are because she doesn't attack the basket vertically, she tends to fling it up which is less accurate and doesn't leave the hand with enough velocity to get past defenders. I could be wrong on this, she might just need to make sure she has more room (part of the answer for sure).

I am posting YTD stat highlights for what they are for the team and the 3 starting guards. There's no debate hypothesis given. No spy balloon or tape-gate controversy headline, no "Big Ten + 'where is Mara Braun'" cartoon. Just stats to gloss over.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm pretty capable of going to the team website and looking up the stats with-out needing to have everything printed out here. Even just a link to the stats location is far more convenient for me (or anybody who absolutely can't grasp the fact that the team page has a stats category) than scrolling past all that.

Having said that, I noticed you did not include stats for things like "Charges taken", "Defensive Deflections on Passes into the Paint", "Opposing Team's Dribble Penetrations into the Lane Prevented or Turned Away", On-Ball Fouls Commited vs Help Defense Fouls Committed". I mean, if we're going to be a Stat-Head, lets include the defensive stuff that makes a difference in a game too!
