6 BIG teams are ranked, 3 others received votes (Iowa 26th, Illinois 29th, MSU 31st). Gophers are 10th tournament team in ESPN's early bracketology. Thought the Gophers might have received a vote or two.

New AP poll out today...tied with Harvard at #37, with (1) one vote...the Minnesota Gophers

8 Big Ten teams in top 25, 4 more received votes

I will be extremely pleasantly surprised if the Gophers are the 10th best team in the Big Ten.
Regarding the Top 25, only team I have seen besides the Gophers is parts of a few Iowa games.
Somebody said Iowa was 26th. They look pretty good to me....dramatically more impressive than the Gophers. I wish it wasn't so.

I think they will be solidly in the top half of the big ten and an ncaa tournament team. I frankly don’t think they will even be close to missing out. They are such a deep team and play so hard with great defense and they don’t turn the ball over like they used to the last half dozen years or so.

Their ceiling would be higher with Braun but their depth is just too good. We can’t afford many more injuries though.

You do realize the competition we are playing with our non conference schedule offers very little resistance?
There are 9 Big Ten teams in the Top 30 in the country.
Somebody said ESPN has us 10th... Barttorvik.com has us higher than that. So, you aren't alone in your thinking we are 10th or better.
I applaud you for your optimism, but I just don't see what you see.
Our team quickness is substandard. We don't run, aren't quick enough and can't finish if we did.
So easy baskets are going to be tough to come by. Our offense is very stagnant and predictable.
If we can get open threes and if we are contagiously making them we'll beat some people. How else? We don't attack the rim...we won't get to the line more than our opponent...we won't get them in foul trouble forcing them to play reserves more than they'd like. Our defense will be exploited...we don't pressure the ball, other than to jump up and down as an on ball perimeter defender...which means good teams will play 5 on 4.
Love for you to be right and I will be extremely pleasantly surprised and happy.

You sure know how to bring the mood down. Since you think they're so bad, maybe you shouldn't watch them anymore.

We have had a weak schedule but we have taken care of business with blowouts. The exception to this was SMU but they shot horribly from the field and from 3 point range (30% and 17% respectively) but still managed 9 point victory. They would have lost that game for sure in years past with that shooting performance.

I wouldn't say we are substandard overall I would say about average to above average. Relative to position and who they guard this is my evaluation from watching all of the games except the 1 not broadcast anywhere.
Hart-slow
Heyer-Average
Grace-slow
Woodson-Fast
Battle-Fast
Mckinney-Very Fast
Rose-Very Fast
Holloway-Very Fast
Braun-Average but OUT
Johnson-Average
Czinano-Average to Fast
Annika Stewart-Average
Klick-I don't know, sample size too small and coming back from injury

We have been playing very good and much more consistent defense compared to years past and their opponents. Some of this is because we have greater depth and they can maintain a higher level of intensity and we have have more athleticism than last year. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Time will tell.
Love for you to be right and I will be extremely pleasantly surprised and happy.

I too think the Gophers are an NCAA tourney team, even without Braun. I am a real fan of the portal pickups and McKinney. Lots of help there.

But I share 60's Guy's concern about the offense. In the offseason, Coach P talked repeatedly about playing fast, and improving their shooting percentage. As of 11/27, the Gophers are the slowest pace of play team in the BIG (329th in the country), according to herhoopstats, and 14th in the BIG in both effective field goal percentage (efg%) and points per scoring attempt (PPSA). Because the Gophers have had so many blowouts, and bench and deep bench players have logged a fair number of minutes, I take team stats to date regarding the Gophers with a grain of salt. Still, the offensive numbers concern me. The things that Coach P said in the offseason were the priority for improvement are not happening, at least not yet.

On the other hand, when you are the lowest turnover rate team not only in the BIG, but in the entire country, you can overcome some less than hoped for shooting percentages. Will be interesting to watch pace of play, turnover rate and shooting percentages once the Gophers get to BIG play.

It's going to take me while to remember that USC and UCLA are in the Big Ten.

I usually try to wait for at least one loss before I start griping about a team.

(Insert "old man yells at cloud" meme here)

The Good News: There are 9 Big Ten teams in the Top 25. We will eventually have the opportunity to figure out what it is like to play good teams even if we ignored that fact in our non conference scheduling.
The people disagreeing with me on our offense and defense in the non conferece...think we will. I hope we do.

It is nice that the Big 10 is getting some love from the voters. Of course, UCLA, USC, were the front runners. Maryland is showing signs that they are back to their old selves. Ohio State is always scary. Nebraska is always hit or miss but they are a fun team to watch play. Indiana is still pretty scary. They are hit or miss. I am glad that Michigan and Michigan State got some votes and made the AP Top 25. Minnesota just has to keep focus and handle the fundamentals. The score will take care of itself.
