Andre Hollins, DeAndre Mathieu Earn All-Big Ten Honorable Mention
A pair of junior guards from the Minnesota men’s basketball team was recognized for their performance this season, as both Andre Hollins and DeAndre Mathieu were named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Hollins was honored by both the head coaches and media voting panel, while Mathieu was recognized by the media.
Hollins, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is the team’s leading scorer, ranking 12th in the conference at 14.6 points per game. He also ranks second in free throw percentage (.838). This season, he has scored in double-figures 23 times, including his first-career double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds against Omaha. He has improved his school-record career free-throw percentage to .843, and also has moved into 19th among all-time Gophers with 1,242 points. He was a All-Big Ten third team selection by the media and coaches honorable mention a season ago.
Mathieu, in his first season with the Gophers after transferring from Central Arizona College, is the Gophers’ leading assist man, ranking fourth in the Big Ten (4.4 apg). He is sixth in steals in the B1G (1.6 spg) and the Gophers’ second-leading scorer at 11.9 ppg (B1G: 23rd). The Knoxville, Tenn., native scored a season- and career-high 27 points vs. Omaha, and has 19 double-digit scoring games this season.
Hollins, Mathieu and the seventh-seeded Gophers (19-12) open Big Ten Tournament play on Thursday evening. Minnesota faces No. 10 Penn State in opening round action at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT, with the game televised live on ESPN2.
