Attendance?

Marcus tweeted that only 5,800 students will be there and he expects a crowd of 47,000. Ouch.

Do you think the students are slow to catch on because they haven't been waiting as long as most of us have to see Gophers success? To them it may just be something fun to do on Saturday. I know when I was a student, I knew of the history, but didn't appreciate the history.
Side note: I went to every game all four years I was in school and had a blast doing it.

I will be hunting in Sherburne County, and then driving down for the game. Then back to hunt in the evening. Perfect Saturday.

Yesterday around this time, according to Gophersports.com, there were 2,603 seats remaining. As of now, there are 1,573 remaining. This includes the $20 seats still on sale at the top of the student sections in the upper deck. If only 5,800 students are going to show, well, that's on them. As usual.

If Game Day came to campus we would have a sold out student section :)

I am surprised to see how many open seats there are in sections 210 and 211. And, they are $90-$120 seats. That is pretty expensive for a stadium that usually has open seats.

Just returned from the the American Public Health Assn annual meeting in Boston. I have been attending this conference for that last 15-20 years. As usual, the U's School of Public Health had a booth. I typically stop by and say hello, even though I am not an alum. For the first time ever the grad student that was staffing the booth showed enthusiasm for the football team. I know its only one person, but I see it as a very good sign. As a side note, my birthday present from the wife was a plane ticket to Mpls, and I take off tomorrow morning. I hope to be a part of a full house. Go Gophers!

They need to go back to the good old days and let students buy more than 1 season ticket. My buddies who went to other small local area colleges loved coming to the games with our group of U of M friends.

All I know is I will do my part to make up for the noise not coming from any seats that might be empty

According to this morning's STrib: "The Gophers sold 6,200 tickets for Saturday's game over the past week and were 2,500 tickets from a sellout..."

So with 48,300 tickets sold (and maybe more in the coming day or two), I am going to guess actual attendance of at least 45,000.

Those $20 tickets are a pretty good deal. I wonder how many tickets are sold on the day of the game? If you don't have tickets and go to the game, you probably will meet plenty of scalpers before you get to the stadium, but I'm sure there are some game-day sales.

per Sid:

• Despite the Gophers football team’s winning streak, it didn’t come close to selling out Saturday’s Penn State game with half of the student section pretty much empty and a lot of no-shows from fans who chose to watch the game on TV rather than in person. The announced crowd was 48,123 in the 50,805-seat stadium.

Go Gophers!!

How is 96% of capacity "No Even Close" to a sell out? I hate the media in the Twin Cities.

If half the Student Section was empty wouldn't that be 5,000 seats?

Had a great time today, watched a good game, basked in the sight of a trophy heading to the Gophers. Got two full weeks to be happy and all the little carping isn't going to change that.

Um, I'm sorry but half the student section did not sit empty. The lower level was 95% full and students filled ~40% of the upper deck sections. Yes, I was disappointed it didn't completely fill up given 3 straight wins including a big one over Nebraska that should have re-energized the kids. But I was equally disappointed with the number of no-shows/no-buys in the rest of the seats. Deer hunting opener, breezy weather, etc were no excuse. Sorry.

With that said, there were probably ~45k in the stadium, and 42k of them Gopher fans.

The attendance at my place was 100% capacity to watch the game and drink beer.

He said there were some no shows. They count towards the announced attendance because they purchased tickets.

I'm assuming it is meant that they only sold about half of the 10,000 to students. After it got close to the game, they opened some of these to the public.

Um, I'm sorry but half the student section did not sit empty.

See above comment. That was because it was opened up to non-students.

Right now the U has two problems with attendance. Problem #1: Fans not showing up. Let's face it...they're were still way too many empty seats for what was the biggest game of the season up to this point. Yeah yeah...too cold, too early, blah blah blah...the U really needs to get butts in the seats. Problem #2: The fans that do show up! Let's face it...the fans in the good seats are too old, too quiet, and too ready to leave as soon as they can. How can we ever get a decent home field advantage when it's damn near impossible to make enough noise with half the fans sitting on their hands? I'm watching the Alabama/LSU game tonight and EVERYBODY in the stands are into this game. I know there's no good solution to this issue, but at some point something needs to be done!!!

Student section and regular fan sections alike, there were plenty of empty seats today. The actual attendance fell below the announced number. Attribute it in some part to the weather, to the sale of many seats to brokers and StubHub speculators who failed to move their stashes, unused comps and sponsor tickets, and students not interested in attending for different reasons. I do think one issue is that despite the winning streak and increased fan interest, many fans, casual and diehard alike, aren't willing to go all in yet. There have been too many disappointments in the past for many to believe in this season's team. I think a win over Wisconsin would alleviate some of this, but too late for 2013 ticket sales.

Anecdotal maybe, but I had 4 tickets in 211 and chose to spend the entire game in the west end zone plaza cuz it's one heck of a party down there. Had a blast, screamed really loud and enjoyed the victory. Sorry if my empty seats offended anyone.

Our attendance is about 93% capacity this season, even with three weak non-conference draws. The Wisconsin game, which will be an easy sellout, will put them at about 95% capacity for the season, that's not too shabby for a team that was expected to finish last in their division this season and a program that has been bad more often than not for a generation. They're filling a modest-sized stadium this year and will hopefully fill an expanded stadium next year.

As for no shows, every team has that. Look at Indiana last week. The supposedly filled their stadium for Homecoming against us last week. At no point in the game was the stadium more than 70% full and by the end, even after their tremendous comeback, the stadium was nearly empty.

Someone mentioned on another thread they had never seen so many ppl watching from the concourse.

That is one affect of having the open air concourse. I've watched at least part of multiple early season games from the concourse due to the baking sun. I also enjoy taking in the game from a lower vantage point or different angle. With the beer garden on the plaza, I suspect that quite a few folks hang around there. I love that there are multiple options for me to watch the game, but it can lead to empty seats being visible.

Why are defending that gas bag Sid and hiss piss poor reporting?

The attendance expectations, in good part fostered by the athletic department, were higher than what was delivered. Plus, the actual crowd was visibly below the announced number by a noticeable amount. Because that happens more often than not, it had created largely justifiable media cynicism about the official attendance at Gopher football games. The Twins got the same treatment as the 2013 season wore on, as did the Wild during the end of its honeymoon pre Parise and Suter. For the Gophers, this will continue until the bodies in the house and the crowd count start matching better.

Don't worry, Gopher phans, it's coming. The Wisc game will be sold out. The energy and noise will be louder. Just like the players, it takes a while to figure out what the phans need to do to support the team. Senior day, B1G game, B1G rivalry, B1G stakes...TCF will be rocking in two weeks. And, next year we'll take another step. All sellouts. Louder crowds. More fun.

Even if they sell out Wisconsin, how many of those fans will be in red?

How was the weather in there..:)

Partly foggy with a chance of a spill but I am sure spirits were high and a good time was had by all.

With the Gophers winning and my crew not running out of beer, it sure was a good time, Killjoy.

We even had post game fun watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show, unanimously pulling for Barney Fife to not screw something up.

Very good crowd yesterday. Loud and present. Not sure how anyone thought otherwise?
