If it's pious and elite to want to see your Golden Gophers actually play team from their conference, sign me up. Want to see the Gophers in Indiana? Well, hope you were there last year. The Gophers don't play there until 2020 or later. IU still hasn't set foot in the Bank since it opened. Familiarity breeds contempt. It's a lot easier to dislike an opponent if you see them once or twice per decade.

So, quit playing any of these horrible ooc teams and play ALL conference games ALL the time. You would get to learn to HATE four more conference teams every years then! It's a real crime to play these horrible ooc games that mean absolutely NOTHING.

With the conference expansion, it would definitely help to ditch at least one, preferably two, non-con game for one more conference game. Ditching two would ensure one more Big 10 home game every year.

Though I'm not a fan of Maryland or Rutgers joining the conference (feels like a booby prize for not gettting Mizzou, ND, Syracuse, Pitt, etc.), I can agree with Wren on this concept - The conference has expanded to 14, so bump up the # of conference games from 8 to 10.

The current notion that we should be excited at the addition of 2 new teams and the potential for new rivalries is ludicrous, at least from the perspective of a fan of a team in the West Division. All this means is that we have to play Maryland or Rutgers every couple years, and lose a chance to play Michigan, Ohio State, etc.

Also, if you needed any other reason to hate this addition of Maryland and Rutgers, look no further than the hated Wisconsin Badgers and their "Big Ten Football schedule" this year. F this.

No, it's a quote from a movie I saw once or twice. However, it's clear from the stupidity of your idea that it responds to that you came up with that one by yourself.

And it's continuously clear that you're a prick.

I'm about as excited as getting a same day root canal (Maryland) and colonoscopy (Rutgers).

I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.

It is from Billy Madison. Here's the whole clip

To today's students, Penn State might just as well always have been in the Big Ten. Michigan State seems like it has always been there, but they've only been in the Big Ten since 1949. Rutgers and Maryland will always be like the new kids in town for people today, but 20 years from now, they will seem like they have always been there. I'm not really excited about their joining, but I'm not wishing them back out (at least partly because such a wish would be pointless). I will always feel less connected with them as they are in the Big Ten East and we won't play them yearly.

I don't think so. They will never become powerhouse type programs therefore they will always be the new kids (unless the conference jumps to 14 or more). The move to bring them in sucks for the most part, but it is what it is.

I wouldn't say I'm a prick as the idea that we should break away from the Michigans, OSUs of the world for ISU and KSU is absurd and I tried to interject some humor into it which he then decided to escalate. Not sure what I did wrong in this instance other than clarifying that the original idea he had is horribly stupid.

I didn't say that I thought that they would become powerhouses, only that in 20 year's time, students will have never known a time when these two schools were not part of the Big Ten.

How they will do is a legitimate question, of course

I agree. As a B1G fan I don't think of PSU of less of a conference member although they are a traditional powerhouse. SEC fans (at least in my generation from what I can tell) don't think less of Arkansas as an SEC member and as we saw last year the term powerhouse couldn't be any less appropriate for that program.

I like it because I live in the DC area. I look forward to seeing my beloved Gophers play in this area once in awhile.

Boy, do I feel stupid. I honestly thought it was possible for the 7 teams in the West to simply flee the conference and snatch up 3 schools in the vicinity and form an actual 10-team league. I mean how hard can it really be?

Sorry I didn't pick up on your original post's sarcasm if that was indeed the case.

Yup. Ditch one or two non-conference games so that opposite division opponents do not become rare matchups. That's really the reason that I was against this move. Not to mention that from a football and basketball standpoint.....I really don't see how either Maryland or Rutgers brings anything significant. Probably Maryland with their basketball squad.

Honestly, I would have preferred Missouri and Notre Dame but this is about tv sets and recruiting. I'd prefer to sit where we are but what the heck. It's not like we added a couple MAC schools to the conference. Maryland does have a national championship and Rutgers has been presentable. Both are good schools and give Penn St someone in their neighborhood to bully. What's done is done and we have to make the best of it I suppose.

I'm excited for the east cost attitudes when they visit Tcf.. From a trash talking fan stand point its fun to get into the verbal warfare with the pompous holier than thous from that edge of America.

Not at all. I don't even like Penn State in it. Nebraska, Missouri, Notre Dame or Iowa State were teams I've thought could be added over the years, but would have been happy with just ten.

I'm okay with them being in the conference, but I certainly don't have any excitement for them. If I had a vote, it would have been for Missouri and Syracuse, one from the west and one from the east.

I'm not excited. I think there were at least half a dozen schools who were a better fit athletically. I don't know enough about the academics at Maryland and Rutgers to speak on that. On the face of these additions it does look like cash grabbing, which is very unfortunate. One of Kansas, KSU, ISU, and Missouri would have been a nice addition to the west. Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, even Cincinnati would have been my preference in the East.

There comes a point where adding schools who aren't 'historical' (whether it is geographically perceived or actual historic traditions) actually hurts the brand. The Big Ten has a very strong tradition and that's very valuable. Is it more valuable than the East Coast TV market? No probably not, but the Big Ten does lose intangible value by adding Maryland and Rutgers.

The only addition I've liked was Nebraska as they fit the rest of the conference's profile. Penn State, Rutgers and Maryland don't belong and shouldn't be in the league imo.

I agree with this. Never thought PSU belonged.

I've always been a fan of Penn state in the B1G... Mainly because they have a solid program. I would take better competition spread out over the country than to have teams like Iowa state and Kansas... Rutgers and Maryland on the other hand don't do much for me.. But the addition of Maryland for basketball certainly beefs up the B1G...

I now have a reason to go to the Maryland games, in MD:

Earlier this week, Maryland released its A-Z Gameday Guide for the 2014 football season. One item in particular caught my eye:

G is for GIGANTIC: The Maryland Concessions team has been cooking up some creative new menu items including the “Chessie,” a gigantic soft pretzel baked with back fin crab dip and melted cheese (serves 4).

Hold up: A gigantic crab-dip-accented soft pretzel that serves four? How could one pretzel serve four people? Pretzels are, almost by definition, a single-person concession item. Just how big is this “gigantic” pretzel anyhow, huh?

Um. Well. From the release:

I rarely eat or drink during games, but I'll demolish anything with shellfish. The Rio in Vegas may have got some of my money, but I damn near got even at their seafood buffet.
