I assume Chance Creekmur made it to Williams today. Any sightings or scoop on the visit? Sounds like he's made verbals to Iowa, then to Santa Clara, and then was rumored to have desired to play quarterback for Iowa State.

The Creekmur's did make it to the game and we're sitting more towards center court. Ross Travis and Joe Coleman also on hand.

Gophers re-offered Creekmur but still not sure how eveything will play out with scholarships due to uncertainity of Royce and Trevor and Cory Joseph.

Sounds like the biggest competition will be Arizona State and Iowa State. If he decides quick, it will be ASU, Gophers I believe would like to drag it out and have him and Godfrey as options if spots open up in the spring.

Tubby went over to Target Center after the game to watch Marcus Paige and reports are he played well and Tubby was impressed. Still a long ways to go for the sophomore pg before he decides but with the uncertainity of the Iowa programs and no Wisc offer yet, Mn is in great shape.

Another kid who put himself back on MN's map today was Minnetonka sharpshooter Cole Stefan, who had 40 in the game against Paige with Tubby on hand.

I play more defense than Cole Stefan plays.

I was wondering if Marcus Paige could make it for some of the game today since he didn't play until 6:00. I supposed that didn't happen?

If Creekmur has the potential to be an athletic 6'7 Damian Johnson type, then Coach Smith is in a predicament. Considering he has one open scholarship.
-He doesn't know what's going to happen with Trevor Mbwake and appears not to have accepted Royce White's public resignation.
-Cory Joseph didn't commit last fall and his big brother is struggling, remembering coaching system is a top priority for him.
-Lawrence Westbrook, presently the only active creative offensive player, is graduating, so he might not want to continue to hold his breath for Royce White.
-Damian Johnson is graduating and Creekmur appears that he would be a nice replacement for that departure.
-Cory Joseph's scholarship, do you cash in your chips for Creekmur when you've played this far with a top 30 recruit?

Tubby's history tells me he will take the first player to commit to the open scholarship.

Per Marcus:

Marshalltown Iowa High School wing Chanse Creekmur watched the Gophers' game Saturday. Creekmur committed to Iowa in 2008, but that didn't last. He also seems to be backing out of his oral commitment to Santa Clara. The 6-7, 200-pound Iowa shooter reminds me of Purdue's Robbie Hummel, although I don't think he can rebound like Hummel or play power forward in the Big Ten. A player at his size who can hit shots from the outside consistently would be a steal for the Gophers.

The problem is, there might not be a scholarship for him. Minnesota officially has one scholarship left for Cory Joseph, because two players (Elliott Eliason and Austin Hollins) already signed for the 2010 class. The only way another scholarship opens up is if Royce White or Trevor Mbakwe leaves the team. Smith is hanging on to slim hope that both White and Mbakwe will redshirt and stick around for next season. That could happen. But White already said he was done, so we'll see. Creekmur probably won't wait to find out. He was a teammate of former Hopkins guard Trent Lockett on the Net Gain AAU team. You can bet Lockett's success at Arizona State is intriguing to him.

Go Gophers!!

That works for me. A bird in the hand and all that...

I would guess there is at least a 1 in 4 chance Royce or Trevor won't be here next year.

I hope they both are on hand next fall but the situations do provide some flux to the schollie count.

I watched the last tow games of the T-Wolves Shootout last night and came away very impressed with Marcus Paige. Paige handles the ball well, has great court awareness, had several look away assists, drives well to the basket, can stop and hit the mid range jump shot and can also shoot the three. He is very thin at this time, but appears to ba a legit 6-1 (as listed in the program) and will obviously fill out as he is only a sophomore. It was very obvious why Tubby and his staff are interested in Marcus Paige.

It could be that Tubby has gotten tired of waiting for the younger Joseph. Chanse is a pretty fair talent, athletic-wise, and will *not* have trouble getting his shot off.....

Don't we think that an impact PG is much more important to the team than another wing player? I like Cobbs' game, but I don't think he's going to be a big time player in this league. I am totally fine with waiting out Joseph. Would we need to give the scholly to anyone?

- Cory Joseph: Cory wants to play right away, and has the talent level to do it. But I just don't see him coming in to replace Nolen as the starter. I could see him starting at shooting guard ... which would be the cause of some awkwardness having Cory move ahead of Devoe in the starting lineup. I just can't see Cory committing to the Gophers.

- Royce White: I'm assuming that White is still in school? That would would mean he's not a lost cause. Of course, he'd still have to go a whole year without getting into more trouble.

QUOTE]

I don't think Johnson is a good comparison for Creekmur. I would guess that Creekmur is not quite as tall, and also not as long or athletic as Johnson. That is not to say Chanse is not a good athlete, but I don't think he be much better than a solid athlete in the Big 10. On the flip side, I think Creekmur is more advanced offensively. He is a good shooter, particuarly for his height, and handled and passed rather well.

I do wonder what happened with Creekmur and Iowa. When he decommitted, it sounded as though it was mutual. Iowa moved on immediately and offered Zach McCabe, who committed to the Hawkeyes not too long after.

Isn't he 6'7 like Johnson. I haven't seen him play, but based on the potential he has to possibly being a QB at a BCS school along with a Big Ten BB player, I'd imagine that he's an elite athlete.

All that could mean is that he has a strong arm and an accurate passer.. nothing to do with overall athletic ability.

Perhaps JohnnyGopher can refresh my memory, but I do not recall Creekmur being a great athlete. He did well in the AAU games I saw, including one against a pair of Big 10 prospects (Joseph Bertrand and Diamond Taylor), but that was more because of his overall skill level than pure athleticism.

Depends how you define "athlete" but he's a star QB in football and a superb 3-pt FG shooter in basketball.

I define athlete as someone who can move quickly, run fast and jump high. Rodney Williams is a great athlete. From what I recall, Chanse Creekmur is not a great athlete, he would probably a bit above average in the Big 10 in term of pure athleticism. I do not believe he would be able to add to the Gophers what Damian Johnson currently does from that standpoint.

I too see it as moving, speed, and jumping- but also measure by other intangibles like vision, awareness, strength, body control. I don't know of a college QB who isn't a great athlete, and having just a strong, athletic arm.

How about Darrell Bevel?:)

Did something happen on the recruiting front?

I was caught a twitter from Marcus Fuller. I know it's obvious but why can't we wait for Creekmur?

Gophers have to either go strong after Creekmur from Iowa or wait until the last minute for Cory Joseph to decide. How can they not wait.

Technically they only have 1 scholarship. I suppose if they wait Creekmur will go elsewhere, and then when Cory picks Texas they will be SOL. Honestly, with Devoe's struggles, I don't love our chances with Cory. Plus the odds are that either Mbakwe or White's scholarships may open up by the April period when Corey will decide. If they really like this Creekmur kid, I think they'd be better off offering him and figuring that if Cory wants to be a Gopher they'll figure something out.

Tubby will take the first to commit. That's been his "MO" for quite a while.

Are you kidding me? There is NO way that if there is only one scholarship left, it's 1st come first serve - if Cory Joseph wants to commit, you take him at any time. This is not the case of Justin Cobbs vs. Darius Smith - these two players are completely different.

Like I said, that's his "MO" for recruiting. Tubby will take the first to commit. If both commit, he'll make it work somehow. UK had 14 players for 13 scholarships in 2001-02 but Tubby "worked" it.

Creekmur is heading to South Florida this weekend and will likely be ready to decide between Arizona State, South Florida and Minnesota soon.

I see a commit coming. Let's just hope he's a 'Real' 'Chanse' if he winds up at the U.

He's old AAU buddies with Hopkins high school's Trent Lockett (AAU under Milwaukee native Coach Watts) who is now at ASU... but, it's a bit far.

Anyway, should know soon on this kid.
