Anyone that lives in LA here?

My son and I are attending the game at UCLA and am looking for some advice. We were thinking of trying to hit up the PSU game at the Coliseum beforehand.

Was wondering if anyone knew how feasible it would be to catch an Uber after the USC game and be able to make it to the Rose Bowl in plenty of time.

Any help anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

I'm not from LA but I'd budget at least an hour travel time from the coliseum to the Rose Bowl. Assuming you can get an Uber right after the game. Sometimes events like that can have an uber backlog.
 

I live near LA. And its a sh*t show getting anywhere any time of day. I've been in stop and go at 6 PM on a Sunday getting to a concert. Its always slow. But would be fun to see two games, so I say go for it. You don't have to park, so that will help.

It would be a fun doubleheader. You could always leave before the end of the game to give yourself plenty of time for the main event at the Rose Bowl. You could tailgate at both if you left after the third quarter.

Leaving early would be a good idea and would also help avoid the Uber availability issue

Probably not very helpful for the original post, but back in 1997 while I was living in LA, I did it in reverse. Saw Tennessee @ UCLA in the Rose Bowl, then made the trek to the Coliseum for Florida St @ USC.

I did leave before the 3rd Q was over to make sure I got to the Coliseum in time, because leaving the Rose Bowl (especially with a big crowd to see Peyton Manning and the Vols) would have been absolutely wicked. I recall seeing some Tennessee fans who I presume stayed for the end of their game get seated near me early in the 2nd Q.
 

The USC game is at 12:30, so personally wouldn’t stay for full game. The wild cards are ride availability and traffic. LA metro traffic is horrific at pretty much any time of day and weekend afternoons; anywhere coming in/out of of LA proper are definitely not an exception…but you just never know and if the planets align, there are no breakdowns, accidents, debris in the roads, other major events it might flow a little. That’s the problem, could take you 30 minutes or 90 minutes and you always have to plan for extra time. Might want to check usc fan forums on Uber expectations.

You can board the E right by the Coliseum (closer than an Uber can get because they close the streets), transfer to the A downtown and you're on your way to Pasadena. The trains run every 10 minutes and are plenty safe on game days. It's a 2 mile walk to the Rose Bowl from the Memorial Park rail stop in Pasadena, or there's a shuttle to the stadium just a few blocks away at the Parsons lot. The trains take under an hour.

When mass transit is viable, use it!!!!

I would say park early in the morning in Pasadena, train down to the Coliseum, then back to the Rose Bowl. Then you have the car ready to go after the Gopher game.

Haha I'm thinking of pulling off the same plan...love where your head is at!
 



I live in Thousand Oaks, all I can tell you is add 45 min to anything you see on a Waze like app and another 30 min for parking.

Public transit, especially the train eliminates all of that. Leaving early from the rose bowl to get on the train would make boarding so much better.

And if you drive and a kid asks for $20 to watch your car. Pay him! Beats the alternative.
 

Any shuttles services to the Rose Bowl from any airports on game day
 

I have my own suspicions on this topic, but I would like to know from anyone with LA experience if it is at all realistic to leave the Rose Bowl around 9PM or slightly after, before the game actually ends and get the the 27 miles to LAX by 11PM, on a typical Saturday night?

The mode of transportation would be a pre-scheduled car service/ Limo that would be waiting fairly near the gates.
 

Happen to be in Palm Springs this weekend. Would take any recommendations for the area and a place to watch the game!

I think you should be okay. The more time you can give yourself the better.


The Rose Bowl is one of the worst stadiums getting into and getting out of. It’s surrounded by a golf course which is surrounded by a local neighborhood. Very wise to have a scheduled car service! The only X Factor is that the airport has its own traffic on top of LA traffic. It can be such a pain. A lot of international flights leave at night too so there is rarely an “easy” time to go to the airport. Last time I went to LAX, a high speed chase delayed my drive by 45 minutes. You just never know in LA.

As mentioned may as well drive down but if you can’t go years ago there was a place called the Beer Hunter in Cathedral City, looks like it’s now called DJs Sports Bar and Grill. The other Beer Hunter in La Quinta closed. This is your classic sports bar, fans of all types. Otherwise the Agua Caliente casinos will probably have the game on at the sports books. Multiple locations, with one of those, Fantasy Springs casino and Casino Morongo are all located on the I-10. If you’re way out East there is a little casino call Spotlight 29 that used to be partially owned by one Donald J Trump, “Trump 29”. The 29 Palms band of Indians has all of twelve members, and the story goes that around 2000 or so (?) DJT arranged a a contract to renovate, expand, license his name to, and manage this little casino owned by the tribe in return for a 30% share. When the national Trump casino entity went under in the early 2000s (high interest debt) the tribe exercised a contractual clause, bought him out and took control. A little bit of history. No comment.

Illini fan living in Pasadena here… I created an account here just to say this exact same thing, but by the time I got approved, there were plenty of responses.

The train is great and, since Covid, the upgrades have been significant. On game day, especially, general safety is not an issue. As BeenHazy stated, take the E train from the Colisseum to Union Station, then board the A train (toward Azusa, may also say “to Pasadena) and get off at Memorial Park. From there either follow the crowd to the Rose Bowl or or to the Parson’s lot for a shuttle.

If you, presumably, want to see all of the Minnesota/UCLA game, then don’t stay for the entire PSU/USC game. Under normal circumstances, that’s about an hour trip by train. But with a large crowd leaving the Colisseum combined with UCLA fans going toward Pasadena, the wait to actually board a train may take significantly longer than normal. In LA, however long you think it will take to get you there, add an hour.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your trip.

We are staying in Old Town. Hotel recommended the shuttle vs. walking to the Rose Bowl. Is it a difficult or unpleasant walk? Also, does the shuttle keep running as long as there are people waiting postgame?

The walk itself is not bad at all, it’s just a matter of your desire and ability to walk. It’s mostly residential with slight up and down slopes. I live 2.2 miles from the Rose Bowl and it takes me about 45 minutes to walk there. I walk at a relatively swift pace, though.

It’s been awhile since I’ve taken the shuttle, so someone who’s more familiar will have to answer the postgame question. But they’ve been running them for years so I would imagine they’ve got it all down to a science.

Post game might be challenging in the dark with all the cars and waking under the freeway, but with a flashlight/phone, not unthinkable at all. Could be just as quick.

Pre-game, no problem.

Walking out of the RB after dark towards downtown Pasadena won't be a problem. I did it twice in 2017 after U2 concerts there.

By "downtown Pasadena" do you mean "Old" Pasadena towards Colorado Blvd?
