Anthony Tucker to the U

Per Ryan James: Anthony Tucker down to Minnesota and Iowa State

And he'd only have a year of eligibility. I'm not sure what to think. We're kinda weak on guards, so I can see the interest. If Tubby feels like he has gotten his head on straight, then I say go for it. Maybe being close to his family gives him the proper support system.

I guess my post from last night on this subject was deleted.

Anthony Tucker has at no time demonstrated that he can stay eligible to play basketball or conduct himself in a way that reflects well on a university.

Yeah. Cuz lord knows all his issues started once he moved away from home.

Please.

Part of the delusional reality of addiction is getting caught in the web that says it will get better real soon. Tomorrow I'll have a new start. It may be down to Cyclones and Gophers for the player, but do the Cyclones an Gophers know that? Taking that kind of baggage without some data of sustained recovery is a disater waiting to happen. I can't imagine this happening.

I don't know if it was deleted or not, but you should be thankful if it was. It was way out of bounds.

Still in Need of 3 Point Shooter

If Anthony Tucker wants to walk on at the U of M and Tubby accepts him, I am all for it. He was a terrific 3 point shooter in high school. If he still can perform that role with accuracy, he can become a missing piece that is not currently on the squad since the departure of Hoffarber. If he goes to his classes, does his school assignments with passing grades, and abides by team rules and codes, he could be of help. If he does not - then drop him from the team.
We still need better 3 point shooting to be more competitive next year. If not Tucker, then someone else.

The concern is always who he takes down with him.

Highly doubt he has a shot at a scholarship unless he walks on for a year and is somehow a model citizen and teammate/player (and therefore earns one for the next season).

My main concern is in him getting other players in trouble with him. Certainly don't need bad influences. Not after the last two years.

If Tucker wants to be a Gopher, I think they should let him walk-on.

No way do you give him a scholly over Mav or Chip, two guys who stayed out of trouble and work their butt off.

I'd be fine letting him walk on, with a very short leash for getting into trouble, first sign of it and done.

That said, He is a very good player and was Winona's whole team when they almost won at the barn. Obiously has D1/Big10 talent, is local, and plays a position of need.

Also, FWIW, rumor has it Tucker was at Williams arena this weekend playing basketball.

Agreed. This better be walk-on. He wasn't even on of the top 7-8 players in the NSIC. He made poor decisions, ostracized his teammates, shot under 40% from 3-point line, displayed poor body language/effort and got arrested for drinking and kicked off the team. Without him, Winona appeared loose, excited and more fluid. Personally, unless I'm a struggling D-III coach, I'd stay away. He is the opposite of what a Tubby Kid embodies.

The U should have nothing to do with this Tucker kid. He is trouble!

I thought the world had moved beyond labeling someone who has problems with alcohol dependency a trouble causer.

He can never get a scholarship to a BigTen school-conference transfer rule.

Rule change, yes he can.

Unregistered, I searched around trying to find info, but this is really all I came up with. I'm not saying how it goes one way or the other because I obviously don't know.

CHICAGO — Big Ten rule that limits transfers from earning athletics scholarships from multiple league institutions won’t change despite a recent rule waiver, Wisconsin Athletics Director Barry Alvarez said Wednesday.

“We talked a little bit about it,” Alvarez said at the Big Ten’s annual meetings in Chicago. “The rules won’t change.”

Former Iowa recruit Ben Brust was released from his basketball scholarship at Iowa in April after the school fired former coach Todd Lickliter. Brust, a guard from Mundelein, Ill., sought to play basketball at another Big Ten school, but was denied. The league’s inter-conference transfer rule prohibits athletes from obtaining a scholarship after signing a letter of intent to play for another Big Ten school.

Brust sought a waiver to the rule, and Iowa wrote a letter to the league on his behalf. But the Big Ten’s academics and eligibility subcommittee denied Brust’s request for a waiver. Brust, through Wisconsin, appealed the ruling and it was granted. He then committed to play basketball at Wisconsin.

The waiver concerned many coaches and athletics directors, who now wonder if the rule is binding or could open up the league to potential litigation.

“I think that’s the question that we have to ask ourselves,” Northwestern Athletics Director Jim Phillips said. “Have we now, as a league, opened up series of new opportunities that didn’t exist? We’ve been pretty steadfast in how we dealt with inter-conference transfers and the rule was pretty clear. Now we may have stepped into an area isn’t quite as clear as we’ve been.”

The league coaches said the ruling generated heavy discussion in their meetings. One person, who requested anonymity, described the basketball meetings as heated and intense.

“The rule was in effect and was in effect for a long time,” Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan said. “How the process worked and all that, I’m not somebody that knows everything about the rules that way. I don’t think anybody really did. But what transpired on this is an individual family making a decision, and it was in their hands. Everything else that happened was through the Big Ten.”

dpodoll had posted a link in this thread to a powerpoint from the Gophers' Athletic Department with some of the Big Ten rule changes for this year, and one of them was that you can now receive a scholarship on an intra-conference transfer. I guess that post was deleted though... If you want to see the powerpoint he can tell you how to find it probably.
