Anthony Tucker to the U

April Fools

It is April but a bit late for April Fools, isn't it?

I can't believe this thread garnered anything more than laughter.

"Some of us are just reporting what we've heard" and the classic, "Reliable source close to Tucker says..."

:D

No, I'm not his pal, but I am going to stick up for the guy sometimes for all the crap (some deserved, most not) he takes here.

Is it possible that Selection Sunday IS Joel Maturi?

Maturi brings it on himself. He wants to be accessible but in many ways is much too accessible and always puts his foot in his mouth. I look forward to having a new AD who just does his job and stays in the background.

If Tucker wants to be a Gopher, I think they should let him walk-on.

No way do you give him a scholly over Mav or Chip, two guys who stayed out of trouble and work their butt off.

I'd be fine letting him walk on, with a very short leash for getting into trouble, first sign of it and done.

That said, He is a very good player and was Winona's whole team when they almost won at the barn. Obiously has D1/Big10 talent, is local, and plays a position of need.

Also, FWIW, rumor has it Tucker was at Williams arena this weekend playing basketball.

Agree, pay his own way, why not, no scholly.

Where did Tucker go to high school? Truthfully, I don't know anything about him... is this a big deal other than his checkered past?

If Tubby passes on him, he will catch hell. If Tubby takes a chance, and Tucker screws up, Tubby will catch hell. (See Royce White saga).

If Anthony Tucker puts on a Gopher uniform, I will lose all respect for Tubby. There are 1492323423 kids more deserving of the honor of wearing that jersey, walk on or otherwise. He has blown every opportunity he's been given - Winona St. played better without him.

I don't quite see how Tucker getting a drinking violation and getting kicked off the team would hurt the schools reputation (Unless it could hurt the teams academic standing - not sure?)? UCONN just won a national title amid NCAA violations (ya know, cheating) and the media can't stop their Jim Calhoun / UCONN love fest.

If anything, it shows the U giving Tucker a second (third) chance and if it doesn't work, Tucker is the failure (not the school) and the U looks generous IMO, for giving a chance to a hometown kid who had some issues. If he succeeds, even better, sounds like a Big10: The Journey story.

I don't want him to have a scholarship considering he doesn't deserve it over anyone on the team right now, but if he wants to walk-on at his home school and improve his life. I am okay with that, one wrong move though and say good-bye, if he really wants to end his problems with alcohol tell him his status on the team is conditional on going to rehab and staying clean. One minor slip up and the experiment has to be over.

I just watched the "Run Ricky Run" 30 for 30 on ESPN, turn-around stories can happen if a guy is motivated and gets the correct help.

I like your passion for Gopher basketball, but, seriously, you need to get some balance in your life. This ain't going to end up on some TV show as a heartwarming success story. Here is your guy's record who deserves another chance. Suspended at least once in high school for walking out on his coach during a game. Ineligible his college freshman year for academics. Two incidents at Iowa involving alcohol and being arrested and being suspended for his actions. Suspended at Winona State after being charged with disorderly conduct. It's not going to happen and we have no control over it, but what's amazing is that we're even debating this after the last two seasons were wrecked by guys who probably were better gambles than Tucker.

However, Minnesota has no available scholarships so unless Tucker wants to pay his own way he won't be on the team unless someone makes a scholarship available AND Tubby decides to give it to him.

Word has it that Blake Hoffarber will go on academic scho.... ah,, er, wait. Never mind.

I don't have an issue with giving Tucker a chance as a walk-on. I would kind of be surprised if Tubby gave him that chance though as the Gophers didn't offer him out of high school. It seems unlikely they would give a kid a 2nd chance (or 3rd or 4th chance) who they clearly don't view as an impact player.

JohnnyGopher has said a few times that the staff won't take risks on kids like they did a year or so ago because they've been burned. He said the staff was very careful with the jucos we recruited for this very reason.

Which is why something like this makes me very skeptical, but maybe if they're not actually using a scholarship they'd be more likey to take the risk? Not saying it's going to happen, but maybe if he walks on they'll consider it. Who knows. I guess I'll just trust Tubby to make the right decision.

Not sure if this was discussed in the thread, but after doing some research it appears to me that Tucker would have to sit out the 2011-2012 season. I didn't think a players transferring between divisions had to sit, but it appears (with few exceptions) that transferring from a 4 year school to another 4 year school regardless of division results in sitting out a year. If that is correct, it would make me less interested in Tucker.

I don't see the major concern here because this would obviously only be for a walk-on spot. There simply isn't anyway a scholarship is on the table or being discussed. Tucker knows a D-I scholarship isn't coming his way, and if he wants to play D-I again it will be through a walk-on spot.

Generally, (with some exceptions) if a guy transfers "down" he doesn't have to sit out a year (i.e. D-I to D-II play right away). If a guy transfers up, he has to sit out a year (i.e. D-II to D-I then sit out). So, yes, I would think Tucker would have to sit out a year. That makes this even less likely to happen, IMO.

If he can't play 2011-2012, I don't see any way that we'd take him. At all.

If the kid is looking to redeem himself at the D-I level, has cleaned up his act and is willing to walk-on I don't see the problem. He was a solid contributor at Iowa when he could play, and can shoot the lights out. Use his redshirt year next year, and see what he can contribute down the road

BigTen transfer rules mean he can never get a scholarship at UM, or any other BigTen school except Iowa.

False. As has already been addressed in this thread, the Big Ten has changed its rules, and intraconference transfers are now eligible to receive athletic aid at their new school.

It's not coincidence that Winona State barely made the NSIC tournament with him and won the NSIC tournament without him.

Man, I hate Txt/tweet speak.

I'm cool with the kid being a walk-on. I'm cool with Tubby not even thinking about it. He's not the kind of player to get very excited about either way imo.

I really don’t see a moral dilemma in taking Tucker per se -- it is more about practicality of it, I think. Although there is a good possibility that the kid will do something stupid again, I think we will be alright as long as we are ready to deal with it swiftly and judiciously.

However, having both Tucker and TM also may look bad for us as the media can spot a story out of the situation. Since they are not to see any floor time together, having them may not be as negative, though.

Assuming that he is not eligible next season, Tucker at least can change our recruiting as long as he remains upstanding and does so well in practice as to be at minimum a solid backup capable of handling about 15 minutes a game.

I presume a coach would not build a team with a questionable character as a working piece until the player removes all doubt. Will Tucker ever be able to remove all doubt? I think it is Tubby’s call.
