Reliable source close to Tucker says he is interested in possibly transferring to Minnesota to play basketball for the Gophers. Tucker went to Minnetonka High School, spent a year at Iowa and is now playing at Winona State. If he were to transfer he would not have to sit out next year and would be a go-to scorer for the Gophs.

If Tucker wants to be a Gopher, I think they should let him walk-on.

No way do you give him a scholly over Mav or Chip, two guys who stayed out of trouble and work their butt off.

I'd be fine letting him walk on, with a very short leash for getting into trouble, first sign of it and done.

That said, He is a very good player and was Winona's whole team when they almost won at the barn. Obiously has D1/Big10 talent, is local, and plays a position of need.

Also, FWIW, rumor has it Tucker was at Williams arena this weekend playing basketball.

You're joking right? I'm sure he would be interested in transferring to Minnesota, but I sure hope the feeling isn't mutual. If we are interested, considering all the stuff that's happened here the last two years, that'd be a real head-scratcher. No thanks.

Also, could this be that second transfer the Gophers were looking at?

I think the fact he is from MN and friends with a lot of the Gophers players could make him an exception to the character issues rule. I don't think you give him a scholly and IMO you put him on a very short leash, maybe tell him he can't drink or something.

His talent is undeniable and I it would be nice to see a MN kid turn his life around at MN, but will have to see what happens.

Cody Larson may be interested in transferring to the U as well. Doesn't mean he's going to be a Gopher. I don't see the staff touching him with a 10-foot poll and I don't think risk-averse Athletic Department would let them if they wanted to.

I agree that we offer him as a walk on only--that is a fair second (third) chance for anyone.

The short leash is pretty well in place for most of the team already and no sense in drawing attention to one particular player. I'm sure Tubby will be VERY clear in stating his expectations on and off the court and consequences of not walking the straight line.

Tucker is scheduled to meet with Head Coach Tubby Smith this week. You were saying?

OK. I still think he won't make it over the Maturi Wall. I'm personally indifferent. We need talent, but we need to end the drama even more. I wouldn't roll these dice.

Agreed.

Any idea how many years he'd have left if he started playing next season?

+1 Tubby can't be as desperate as some of the people around here. The number of people wanting the U to basically sell its soul is amazing. Ya, ya, I know, we owe it to the guy because he just might turn his life around, and it has really nothing to do with the fact he might help win a few games as opposed to the odds of him embarrassing the U. I'm guessing this difference of opinion is quite a bit between two age groups, but some of you need to study up on the role of collegiate athletics as well as the history of this program.

Some of us are just reporting what we've heard.

I think Tucker deserves a Mulligan

One thing I know. If this is true, no matter what decision is made, one way or another it will be Maturi's fault. I've even heard it's Maturi's fault that the Twins can't hit a lick right now.

Well, yeah, if Maturi would stop paying for sports no one cares about and give the baseball team some money and a stadium, the Twins could draft the improved Gophers players and overall help the quality of the Twins and MLB ... thanks a lot Maturi!!!!!!!

I don't quite see how Tucker getting a drinking violation and getting kicked off the team would hurt the schools reputation (Unless it could hurt the teams academic standing - not sure?)? UCONN just won a national title amid NCAA violations (ya know, cheating) and the media can't stop their Jim Calhoun / UCONN love fest.

If anything, it shows the U giving Tucker a second (third) chance and if it doesn't work, Tucker is the failure (not the school) and the U looks generous IMO, for giving a chance to a hometown kid who had some issues. If he succeeds, even better, sounds like a Big10: The Journey story.

I don't want him to have a scholarship considering he doesn't deserve it over anyone on the team right now, but if he wants to walk-on at his home school and improve his life. I am okay with that, one wrong move though and say good-bye, if he really wants to end his problems with alcohol tell him his status on the team is conditional on going to rehab and staying clean. One minor slip up and the experiment has to be over.

I just watched the "Run Ricky Run" 30 for 30 on ESPN, turn-around stories can happen if a guy is motivated and gets the correct help.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but considering he played at Iowa he can't even accept another Big Ten scholarship.

Or does that year at Winona circumvent the rules?

I believe the Big10 changed that rule this year, not sure if that applies to Tucker though or when the change comes into effect.

However, Minnesota has no available scholarships so unless Tucker wants to pay his own way he won't be on the team unless someone makes a scholarship available AND Tubby decides to give it to him.

Plus the Gophers wading into the stadium mess demanding TCF delayed Target Field even longer. We'd still have Santana and Hunter if Maturi hadn't muddled everything.;)

AND if he'd build them a new stadium maybe they could stop using Target Field occasionaly and stop giving the Twins that bad Gophers luck!

AND AND AND if Maturi would just cut baseball and let Anderson go help coach the Twins, they could probably hit better!

This man needs to be GONE!!!!!!

There is ZERO chance the Gophers put him on scholarship.

Tucker is begging for a chance to get back to a major program. Last week he was making noise about heading to Ames to enroll and attempt to walk on. The Iowa State coaching staff put that to rest in a hurry, as they had NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER.

But he's finding out that a relatively talented offensive player without great athleticism or interest in playing hard (and tons of baggage) - isn't much of a hot commodity.

Joel Maturi is the Kevin Bacon of Minnesota sports failures. Every problem any Minnesota team has ever had or will have in the future can be traced back to Joel Maturi within 6 steps.

No, I'm not his pal, but I am going to stick up for the guy sometimes for all the crap (some deserved, most not) he takes here.

I don't know if I'm a fan of Maturi or not but there's always one thing that bothers me about the constant ripping:

95% of the people who rip on him the most don't have the foggiest idea of what his job responsibilities are (including me). Just like the starting QB or the head coach, it's chic to rip on the AD when things aren't going well. I'd be f'n shocked if more than a couple people on this board could actually list more than 2-3 of his job responsibilities. I would imagine that the AD at a major University has a level of responsibility that most folks could not even fathom.

That being said, I don't have a clue if he's good at his job or not. It's not my call, which puts me in the same boat as everybody else on this board.
