“S” CURVE ULTIMATE FIELD OF 68 (through 2020-21 season)
The 68 teams (32 automatic qualifiers, 36 at-large) are determined by the number of NCAA Tournament appearances since the 1999-2000 season. The school with the most tourney appearances from each conference is deemed the automatic qualifier (i.e. Michigan State has appeared in every tourney since 1999-2000, so the Spartans get the Big Ten’s auto bid). The same thing applies to determine the 36 at-large bids.
Once the 68 teams are identified, seeding then is determined strictly by the number of NCAA Tournament wins by each school since the 1999-2000 season, with one exception. The last 4 at-large teams automatically will be slotted as the top 4 (of 6) #12 seeds.
2022 NCAA Tournament sites are used for the projection. An * denotes an automatic qualifier.
